Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)Customer Review: Sound investment (pun intended) Summary: 5 Stars
Six speaker surround sound is impressive. Watched Batman - The Black Knight with others who had seen it at the movies. They said it sounded exactly the same. Mind you - this was with an old DVD player - so the unit was playing its imitation Dolby Surround sound because RCA cables will not transfer true Dolby sound.
I was not aware prior to receiving the unit that the upconversion only works through an HDMI cable out to the television. (I actually did quite a bit of research on the internet before deciding on this unit - but I suppose the tech sites assume you already know you can't upconvert picture quality wihtout an HDMI connection). If you have a TV set three years or older - you probably don't have that. After a great deal of research on the internet, the inescapable conclusion is that there is no such thing as a convertor from HDMI to component cables - and there probably never will be (because of some copyright issue).
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this receiver in order to set up a home theatre. It is replacing my 30-year old Onkyo receiver which is still great! Unfortunately my 30-year old receiver has no home theatre capabilities, so it was time for an upgrade. ;-)
I am using this receiver to switch my HDMI and Component inputs; my DVD player and cable box outputs connect to the receiver, with the receivers HDMI output connecting to the TV input. I have 5 speakers (2 front, center channel, and 2 surround) connected to the receiver, with my front speakers being 30-year models that I purchased with my previous Onkyo receiver.
The only 'negatives' that I would have about the receiver is the complexity of the manual and the remote control. If you are a 'techie', its not too difficult to figure your way around to set things up and use it on a daily basis. Otherwise, I recommend you get a 'techie' to help you out.
Customer Review: Onkyo TX-SR606 - Completely Satisfied Summary: 5 Stars
This receiver lived up to all my expectations. I have owned Onkyo Studio Monitor 500 speakers for a long time, and have finally found an amp that matches them. We just picked up a 42" HD TV, and bought this receiver because we don't have a Blue Ray Player yet... Upscaled video quality is excellent.
Before I bought the unit, I researched many brands, and chose Onkyo. I downloaded the instruction manual, and that was a good thing. There are soooo many awesome features, I advise any potential buyer to do the same. Be familiar with it before it arrives at your house. Then you can pop it out of the box --- hook it up --- and you have awesome sound and video!
I was most impressed when I played a "regular, lousy ol DVD" and the "THX" logo with thunder/lightning rain, shattering glass, and digital sound came on, jeez, it was like being in the theater! I knew that I had made a wise purchase!
Customer Review: Almost Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
Great A/V receiver. As has been said in all the pro reviews, it has plenty of connections for hooking up everything and it is capable of decoding anything you can throw at it (and even some things you can't throw at it yet). Set up was quick and painless and the Audyssey tuning works perfectly. I've had no problems with humming and I don't think the unit runs too hot.
The only minor issue is that the video signal seems to get lost sometimes when I switch between the many inputs I have plugged in. In other words, it'll say that I've selected a particular video signal and nothing is showing on the screen. I've got to switch to another video signal and then back and all is good again. I've had the receiver about 4 months and this has happened about 3 times. Not much of a problem but annoying.
Other than that, it has been perfect and I happily give it 5 stars at this price.
Customer Review: This receiver is great for Blu-Ray movies ! TrueHD is awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I just got this from Amazon this week. Got the speakers setup for 5.1 and used the autocalibrate (Audessey) to fine-tune it.
Blu-Ray movies in TrueHD sound is so realistic. Who needs a movie theater?
Here's my setup and how everything is connected:
Onkyo SR606, Samsung BDP-1400 Blu-Ray player, HD cable box and a Samsung 52" HDTV all connected via HDMI through the SR606. Speakers are Polk bookshelf fronts, Bose rears and Yamaha sub. Center is an Athena.
The Blu-Ray player is set to output bitstream and lets the SR606 do the audio encoding. Seems to work fine.
This system is NOT running hot for me. Nice & warm. It has plenty of ventilation so that may be part of the reason.
Good luck with your evaluations and purchase. Hope I was able to help.
Tony
I'll post with any further observations.
