Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)Customer Review: Excellent Receiver, Easy Setup, Great Sound. Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to this receiver, we had a Yamaha that suffered a power supply failure. As an added bonus, this receiver's HDMI ports support 1080p operation (the Yamaha didn't), as well as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoders (again, the Yamaha didn't have this).
Cabling was very straight forward. Inputs for HDMI, Component and Digital Audio (both Coax & Optical) are all assignable to different input labels. Highly configurable in this regard. Nice job guys.
Sound is great, picture is fantastic too. It converts between input & output media types too. That is, you can do stuff like input Component and output on HDMI. Handy if you've got a Wii, like us, or an Xbox 360 that's pre-HDMI port..
The only problem I had with it was the same one I had with the Yamaha. Our DVR is a TiVo HD. When connected via the receiver, it would never stay on the video output setting of "Native", and would constantly change to Fixed 1080i or Fixed 720p. Moving the HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV fixed this. We now send the sound to the reciver from the TiVo HD via an optical cable.
The remote is fine, though I haven't used it since I finished the initial setup, favoring our Harmony One. This receiver also has a Faroudja upconverting chip included. I'm not using it, favoring the conversion that our TV (Samsung LN46A650) performs..
All in all, a fine receiver, at a great price. Looking forward to adding a Blu-Ray player to the mix here, though not before I can get a Profile 2.0 player that's not a PS3.
Customer Review: ONE cord going to the TV. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this receiver from Amazon with a different list of priorities than the average shopper. I wanted to have ONE HDMI cord going to my TV.
That's it.
I had been getting so tired of pushing 6-12 buttons on my remote every time I wanted to switch between Blu Ray, Xbox, Bluetooth, and Satellite, that I needed to spend some dough on something to manage it for me. To do this, I needed something that could switch 2-3 HDMI connections as well as Component Video, composite video (from my cell phone), and various stereo RCA connections, and do it all while extracting the audio and pushing the video out to the TV via one HDMI cord.
This does it perfectly. I am very happy. The only video signal which has not successfully upconverted was a PAL signal originating from my Cell phone, which I later switched to NTSC, and even it works now.
You people that keep talking about it running very hot have never owned a real receiver before... it runs "warm", just like the rest of them do. You're not supposed to run them for 12 hours straight at concert volume while wrapped up in towels in a closed drawer (that's only good for broken Xboxes, LOL). Give it two inches to breathe on the top and back, and you're good to go.
That being said, I did have to put this on TOP of my TV stand because each of the shelves allowed for only 3/4" clearance above the unit.
I will be buying a second one when I finish my basement.
Customer Review: Awesome Receiver! Summary: 5 Stars
I considered myself an audiofile many years ago. Then children came along and I lost touch with high end audio equipment. Well, the kids are gone and I decided to finally rebuild my audio system. Wow, audio equipment sure changed over the last 20 years! Now, one needs to consider how the equipment will reproduce all forms of audio and video. I spent a lot of time reviewing the specifications and reviews of numerous mid-level home theater receivers. I finally decided on the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver. The ordering process was quick and simple. The receiver arrived within a few days. The receiver was packed very well and therefore arrived in perfect condition. Installation and set up were easy. I connected a Playstation 3 and a Sony rear projection 1080p HDTV to the receiver via HDMI cables. I also connected a Klipsch Cinema 10 system to the receiver via Monster cables. I decided to connect an Onkyo DS-A2X Remote Interactive iPod Deck. Once connected, I selected my favorite iPod playlist and cranked up the system. INCREDIBLE!!!!!! I don't ever remember sound like this from any of my previous audio systems. Next, I switched on my favorite high definition TV station (ESPN). Watching my beloved Cleveland Indians in high definition supported by incredible audio is nearly a spirtual event. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for a reasonably priced system.
Customer Review: Hard to beat for the money Summary: 5 Stars
This receiver sounds amazing!! I used the very user friendly Audyssey speaker set up. Then made a few of my own corrections, (such as turning up the center channel and sub output.) Now everything that comes out of this receiver sounds incredible. This is what I have been waiting for.
I replaced a Harman avr235 and could not be happier. I can hear sound out of all 7.2 (yes.2)channels and I don't have to keep turning on, and re-turning on the rear surround speakers like I had to with the Harman.
4 HDMI inputs are essiential for me. (and it's even one short) 1-DVDr, 1-HDDVD player, 1-HD cable box, 1- XBOX 360, and 1- PS3/Blue Ray player. (I have 2 HDMI Inputs on my TV so it works out great.)
I was a little skeptical at first because none of the "cool" lights such as DTS MASTER AUDIO, or DOLBY TRUEhd, were lighting up, and it took a lot of reading and web browsing to figure out why. Now that I understand you need a DTS or Dolby TrueHd pass through player to get the receiver to de-code the formats, all is well.
One of the preferred things for me is the HDMI pass thru. this lets my kids watch anything without keeping my receiver on and potentially damaging my speakers while I am not there.
In short this is a great receiver with many features and few drawbacks...infact I am still looking for them.
Customer Review: Perfect 7.1 HD Sound Receiver Summary: 5 Stars
I won't bother with breaking down the entire receiver since everyone else has done that. Instead, I'll address a few key things:
BUZZING FROM PS3 HOOK-UP
I have not had this problem whatsoever. I've got all my video inputs running from the video source to the receiver via HDMI (PS3, HD Cable) or component cable (Wii, DVD player), then one HDMI cable going out to my Samsung LN46A630 LCD TV. So unless you're hooking them up some funky way that you shouldn't be, you shouldn't have this problem.
HDMI SWITCHING (PASS-THROUGH) VS. HDMI REPEATING
HDMI is misleading in that the general conception is that all HDMI is supposed to be made so that you can have just one cable that will route both HD video and HD sound. This receiver is an HDMI repeater that actually transmits HD sound through the HDMI cable. With lesser models that only do "pass-through" HDMI switching, all you get is the video source through the HDMI cable and you need a second cable for audio (and it probably won't be HD either). The 606 will process both HD audio and HD video through an HDMI cable without any problems.
Other than that, the setup menus are rather straight forward and of course the sound is amazing (I use Klipsch speakers). For the price, this is a great, fully capable HD audio/video receiver that pretty much can't be beat.
