Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)Customer Review: Full HD, HDMI Splitter, 7.1, Onkyo name, why pay more? Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced a 9 year old JVC 5.1 system with this after buying a PS3 to use as a Blu-Ray player. I wanted to take advantage of the new hd audio standards, and was tired of not having enough HDMI inputs on my 52" Samsung 1080P tv. The 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output work perfectly, switching as needed.
Rundown:
Hookup: Easy, everything is well labeled and there is ample space to work my fat fingers. Read the instructions if you only have 5.1 speakers instead of 7.1, you have to use specific hookups (what I'm saying is don't guess like I did and then wonder why it didn't work... the instructions are very clear if you bother to open them!) :) I have the following inputs hooked up through it right now: FiOS HD/DVR TV Receiver (HDMI), XBOX 360 Elite (HDMI), PS3 (HDMI). Everything feeds out to my TV via HDMI.
Configuration: Simple after you read the instructions. The microphone they provide to "tune" the system, coupled with the on-screen walk through setup system is very nice.
Use: Couldn't be better, they've done a great job of giving you the right buttons and LCD display features/text. My Logitech Harmony 880 remote has the configuration for this receiver in the database, and controls the receiver perfectly.
Audio quality: Amazing, noticeably better than my JVC 5.1 in 5.1 mode, and once I added the other speakers for 7.1 it is fantastic! No more distortion when I crank up the volume in Call of Duty 4 or during a loud movie scene.
Video quality: Everything looks great in 1080p!
Bottom line: For well under $400 shipped, this model competes with some of the much, much more expensive units.
Customer Review: Great at twice the price Summary: 5 Stars
This receiver is clearly superior to everything else in it's price class. You really do have to spend twice as much to get anything even close from the other manufacturers. For example, the Sony STRDG820 has video upscaling, but not video upconverting like the Onkyo. The difference is huge, all upscaling does is convert analog 480i signals to 480p, but the output is still analog (it comes out the component video connection). Upconverting takes all analog video sources, converts them to digital (you can choose the format) and pumps them out the HDMI connection. This means all your digital and analog video go out the one HDMI port to your TV. Only one button is needed to switch both your video and sound.
Another thing I like about this receiver is that all the configuration is done via On Screen Displays - yes on your TV. This makes it so easy to navigate the menus and make selections. You can almost throw away the manual, but not quite. And speaking of the manual, it's not bad. It's not great mind you, but much better than the piece of crap that Sony provides. Yeah, I had the STRDG820 for a few days. Couldn't return it fast enough. Was I happy when I found that the Onkyo was [...] cheaper!
But how does it sound, you want to know? In one word: Fantastic! Quite honestly, I don't know why anybody would want to buy anything else in this price range. The TX-SR606 just blows them all away. I could go on and on about all the great bells and whistles on this thing, but you'd be better off just going to the Onkyo website and looking at the specs there. You can even download the manual if you want to. Just whatever you do, don't waste your money on anything else.
Customer Review: Great Value Summary: 5 Stars
before i go into the review let me state i own a Denon 3808, Onkyo 805, and this Onkyo 606
Out of all those 3 the 606 is the best value, with 4 hdmi input. that are capable of upconverting to 1080P. But there are some things that you don't get with with the 606 that you do with the 805. some of which include a power plug to plug into a fan ( if you don't already know onkyo's get VERY VERY hot) and you will want a small computer fan along and/or plenty of room to breathe (NO STACKING). As for power i challenge anyone to find speakers that it can't handle, you won't find any. The auto calibration system that they use in both the 606 and the 805 in considered by most to be the very best in the industry. the standalone version of the box that does what the reciever can do cost $1500
here is a little comparison for those who are just getting to a point where they need a AV reciever. Denon is a great brand known for there 2 channel preformance but in my personal opinion for the price you pay it lacks the features Onkyo gives for that same price point. but if you have the money to spend and like to listen to stereo (2 channel) music i would diffinetly go with the denon. but if you need as many features as possible and plan on mostly surround sound i would go with the Onkyo
If you are just getting into the whole home theater rig or you are looking to replace a existing reciever, you won't regret the 606. i have owned Sony's, Panasonic's, Denon's, Onkyo's, and Poineer's. (I have never had a sony more than 2 years) and out all of those Onkyo gives you the most for your money
Customer Review: Onkyo 606 Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to replace my older Technics and had been researching a potential new receiver for a while. I narrowed my options to Onkyo 706 and 606 and finally decided for the SR606 mostly because of the price and I didn't need 1080 upscale since I have a Play Station 3 as my blue ray DVD player.
I am absolutely happy with my decision. Some people were complaining about the heat. I can not. It is not warmer than my CD or a deck player. My TV and PS3 are several times warmer then the 606.
Set up was a piece of cake. After peeking into a manual I just decided to use my head and common sense and had everything done in few minutes. Plug and play... And it does play good!!
The Audyssey set up for speakers was also very easy. You just hook up a microphone and put it there where you sit the most and potentially you might. Then you just wait and in 5min everything is done.
I would definitely recommend it to everybody. I do believe that there is no better receiver under $600.00 and then the question is if and how much you are going to use what this one doesn't have or do... Yeah, it is truth that for the coffee I usually go to Dunkins ...
What my system contains of?
Sony Bravia KDL-40V
Onkyo TX-SR606
Technics SL-PD9 CD player
Onkyo TA-RW255 cassette player
PS3 blue ray player (I do not care for games)
Cerwin Vega LS-12 front speakers
Paradigm Titan Monitor
Cerwin Vega CLS-6C center speaker
Sennheiser HD555 head cups
I love what I've got and do not regret buying one single piece.
Customer Review: Great a/v receiver Summary: 5 Stars
For what it is worth, I knew absolutely zero about home theater one month ago.
I recently bought a new TV, Samsung LN46A650, and was tired of the cables hanging off the back of it. I decided to by buy the Onkyo receiver after reading tons of reviews and talking to folks I know who are into the A/V scene. I am very happy with my purchase, and would recommend this product to anyone.
A couple of things I'd like to add:
1: I bought my home theater paycheck to paycheck. This means I bought my TV one week, the A/V receiver 2 weeks later, and my speakers 2 weeks later. While I just had my receiver hooked up, it passed audio from each of my inputs (Cable box, Apple TV, Wii, and PS3) straight through to my television. I had no clue it would do such a thing, and I even called Onkyo customer support to ask if it was possible. They said it was as long as the inputs were HDMI. Well, my Wii isn't HDMI, but it still passed the Component video and audio over the HDMI cable run through the wall to my TV. VERY NICE. Just thought that may be a selling point to anyone who is on a budget and can't afford speakers right away. Hope it made sense.
2: My speakers are in-ceiling Polk Audio RC80i's... The whole set up was easy and configuring on the receiver is not hard at all. I am now a huge fan of Onkyo. Setup was a breeze and now I have a home theater setup that may not be top of the line, but certainly impresses everyone who see's it. TV, speakers, subwoofer, and receiver for around $3k. Thank you Amazon!
