Customer Review: Perfect solution for my fireplace mount

Amazon price was less than half of what Circuit City and Tweeter wanted and it shipped free! It seemed like forever for it to arrive after I ordered it but that was simply because I was so anxious to get it - it arrived in 6 days including a weekend and Christmas day! I now have my new 50" Panasonic plasma (about 85 lbs) over the fireplace - WOW - it looks great!
We were faced with how to mount the TV over an opening above a fireplace insert - you know the type - an recessed spot over the mantle in a home built in the late '90s for about a 35" CRT set...For such an application make sure you review your TV manufacturer's specs and/or guidance - I placed a thermometer in the planned mounting location and lit the gas log fireplace for an hour or so. The temperature rose several degrees but never near the upper limit of the recommended operating ambient temp. range. It is unlikely that I'd often have the fireplace lit and be watching the TV, and the upper temp. limit when not operating the TV is even higher.
To clear the front of the opening I needed about a 25" extension from the back - after doing a lot of internet research I saw this mount - listed with about 28" extension capability. It fit the bill perfectly. When I started searching for where to find one - I was quickly disheartened at the thought of having to spend another &700 or so (including taxes) on top of the TV's price - at a local store in order to secure the new TV where I wanted it...Amazon saved me no less than $400 on this mount over the local stores, with the only difference being the platinum finish vs. the retail stores' black finish.
There is some limitation as to placement on your walls if you have odd stud placement. Obviously the mount is heavy and with a rating to hold 200 pounds, you have to hit studs when mounting it on drywall. There is room to accomodate studs 15-17 inches on center. Also, in my specific application it was important that I could laterally adjust the cantilever mounting arm about 2 inches to either side of the mount wallplate's center, so that the TV ended up centered over the fireplace & mantle when the wallplate was attached to the studs. This was something I researched extensively and even contacted Omnimount directly about prior to purchasing this mount online. FYI - you can get specs and installation instructions at their website....
Included in the box were all sorts of screws for attaching to a variety of TV brands, as well as two bracket options for attachment to various TV brands and sizes. Installation was not too complicated, for someone like me with what I'd call fair carpentry skills. You'll most likely want someone to help hoist & hold the mount while you attach it to the wall and to do the same when you place the TV on the bracket. Getting the mount onto the wall was more challenging than getting the TV onto it, due to the recessed opening I was working in. It took me longer to connect and wire all my various A/V components than to get the TV up.
