Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OmniMount ECSB Component Shelf for CRT TVs and Video AccessoriesCustomer Review: A great addition Summary: 5 Stars
The long and short of this review is:
Functionality: 5 stars
Aesthetics: 5 stars
PROs:
-The look is great. For me, it was 90% about looks, and then I just wanted to make sure the unit could support a little weight, wouldn't fall apart, and wouldn't require a massive installation process. I think the unit meshes best with a black-framed TV, but with some gray/silver in the piece (the support under the glass shelf is silver), it really will look great with anything short of a bright neon orange frame.
-To expand upon the last PRO, the aesthetic design really is terrific. Black+glass+silver = sick (the good kind of "sick"). I would probably put this in the "masculine" style category, but that is mainly for the guys who don't want to look like they have a discount store or particularly feminine unit. This product is versatile and will work for almost anyone.
-One more look PRO. Most of the pieces "look" to be of high quality, though I couldn't attest to whether they actually are. Plastic covers conceal any rough edges or internal components of the shelf. In the end, it is a smooth, sleek, attractive unit.
-Price. Scour the net or electronics/furniture stores, and you probably will run into a few options, but you're probably paying a fairly ridiculous sum. The price for this unit at Amazon right now is ~$60.
-Pivoting shelf rotates--not a lot, but I'd say a solid 45 degrees or so--which has come in more handy than I initially expected. When I need to work with connections behind the TV, it is a relief to be able to push the shelf to one side and get back there with minimal obtrusions.
-Stable unit. For those with wood wall studs like myself, this unit isn't going anywhere once you drill, screw, and tighten (that didn't sound appropriate). The glass shelf is attached to the arm with three fairly short screws, but I almost feel as if it doesn't need the screws, if properly balanced, because the weight of even a cable box should rest stably on the unit, if it is placed over the arm's center of gravity. Of course, that said, don't be an idiot and not use the screws--otherwise, one bump and your $400 PS3 is laying in pieces on the floor.
CONS:
-This requires a few tools, which may not be a problem for lumberjack man, but it can add some cost if you need to rent or buy them. Namely, you need a drill (probably at least a 12V model), a socket wrench with 9/16 in. and 10 mm attachments (or just a 9/16 wrench and a 10 mm wrench), a stud finder (unless you already know where your studs are or trust your knuckle-tapping technique), a pretty basic screwdriver, and a vertical level (or use the plum line method).
-I think the weight was fine, but I'm a pretty strong guy. The glass shelf may prove heavy for some, and I recall needing to hold it with one hand at times, though that was probably just me trying to do the installation in less time. Not a big deal, but it couldn't hurt to have an extra pair of hands around while you're installing this.
-This product does not mount TVs, which wasn't necessary for me, but consumers shouldn't get the wrong idea about the purpose this product serves: it is a shelf--nothing more, nothing less. It does not conceal cords, either, so grab some velcro ties and bind those wires together. Or, for the more adventurous/professional setup, drill into the wall and pass the cords through it and back to the appropriate receptors.
I can't think of anything but those few minor quibbles, none of which diminished the product enough for me to reduce its 5-star rating. I installed two of these, one above the other, to the left of my Samsung 37' LCD TV and went with a black cable box and PS3 to match. Compliments abound.
You can purchase a multiple-shelf product from Omnimount, but I really prefer the single-shelf method. Multiple single shelves add versatility to where you position your shelves, rather than having to find one larger area for the multi-shelf product. It may create a more seamless look to use the bigger unit, but I achieved the same look (that is, you can't tell it's really two separate shelves) because my two units are placed with a 1-2 inch gap between wall mounts and the PS3 easily conceals the gap (FWIW, it would have looked good even if it hadn't, though). I also do not think the multi-shelf product has pivoting (rotating) shelves.
