Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACDCustomer Review: Simply awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
There are already so many great reviews that I don't need to add much but I wanted to put in a vote. This worked right out of the box. My set up is a Samsung HDTV flat panel 40". I needed a new player because I needed to play DivX which my Sony NS75H did not support. One big attraction of the Oppo was the ability to read PAL and convert to NTSC. In this regard it played some European pal DVDs flawlessly once I set up the region code as reported. The remote is awesome. The player responds instantly which is a delight after using the Sony. There are also several slow motion speeds which get you down to almost 2 frames a second which very nice. Another nice feature is the ability to access the setup menu and make changes while playing your DVD.
By the way the packaging is a work of art. I've never seen anything like it. I'm also glad to hear that this is a US company.
After using it now for several days the only downside that I see, is that it does seem to get very hot. This is particularly noticable if it's on another component that generates heat.
The only other drawback is that I miss a the feature of remmbering where your place on a DVD even if it was played several DVDs ago. No ability to advance frame by frame although slowest slow is pretty good.
Customer Review: The return of the messiah Summary: 5 Stars
This is one unbelievable player. I also own the Toshiba Hd player. I love both. My main problem was to change region i wanted it to play region 2 DVD. I applied the hack but didn't work for me right away
Here is the hack
Firmware update may remove the region hack. Region free:
1) No disc
2) Press Set Up
3) Press 9210
4) Press 0
5) Press Set Up. Done! Supposedly
To access the zone changing option I had to press the setup key on the
Remote than go to the preference page. Under TV type choose auto first than enter the 9210 a menu will pop up. Choose zero. It will play all regions. Click again on setup. Reboot your player go back to the preference page and choose NTSC (if you have an NTSC TV). Leaving the player on auto gave me a black picture on my high def TV with region 2 DVD's.
When I changed it to NTSC under the DVD player's menu. It could play all regions and I could see the picture.
This thing is awesome. I give this product 15 stars
Played xvid with subs in a flash. Just perfect.
I used to own the Phillips dvp 642/37 and trust me this one will blow your mind away. The Phillips was a dud when it came to xvid
You might encounter or not this problem to change region. I did
Customer Review: Best DVD, SACD and CD available Summary: 5 Stars
I am using my 981 with my 46 inch 1080p Sony Bravia LCD. Setup thru the provided HDMI cable was easy and the image and sound obtained right out of the box was excellent.
The image from old DVDs is really outstanding, although the images obtained from my Xbox 360 HD-DVD, using VGA cable are outstanding, the quality of the image from my DVDs is much brighter and with more pleasant textures. I am watching all my DVD collection again.
The sound from old Cds is incredible. I daresay that this is the best CD player I have heard. Sound is clear, very clear, bass is deep and very detailed. Again, I am going thru all my CD collection, again.
I love the remote control. The distribution of the buttons are very well designed and the keyboard pad is an excellent idea, specially for low light situations.Unluckily it is not lighted, but the keyboard pad somehow helps.
I can say that the Oppo 981 DVD player is designed for people who own 1080p equipment, who has left behind components and 720p Tvs. For those who want the best in definition, and who still listen to SACD and stereo music, the 981 is the only choice. I am very, very happy with my choice. Thanks Oppo for such a great product.
Customer Review: Great player but came with ants (very strange) Summary: 5 Stars
Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD I bought this player in February of 2008. Loved it. Used it with a 50-inch plasma TV and could really find nothing to complain about. At the end of May I moved from Ohio to Colorado and when I began packing up the unit (kept the original packing) ants began coming out of the unit by the hundreds. While my wife was looking on in horror, I moved the unit outside and opened up the case. The inside of the unit looked like a scene from the second Alien movie. It was filled with ant eggs and ants. I saturated the inside with ant spray and left it down by the curb for three days. Then put it out to the trash. Now, I cannot be ABSOLUTELY sure these ants came with the device but in my own mind, I'm am sure. First of all we have never had an ant infestation in our home. Yes, an occasional walk-in ant or two but nothing like this. Secondly, I have never seen ants like these in our part of Ohio. They were VERY small. I don't think there is anything I can do since I basically destroyed the unit but I can tell you I'm VERY reluctant to buy a replacement.
Customer Review: Oppo's a wonder! Summary: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research, as I anticipated the installation of our 50" plasma TV, regarding DVD players. I came across many reviews for the
Oppo DV-981 up-converting player. Such glowing reviews seemed almost too good to be true. I have a lot of 480p DVDs and had high hopes they would look good on our 720p Panasonic. I connected the Oppo to the TV with a HDMI and hit play. Outstanding picture...bright clear colors, clean sharp edges, really white whites and black blacks, crisp details....
As much or better than I had hoped for. During moments when there is no audio there is absolutely NO sound...clean silence. I hear details on many discs, that I have played many times before, that I had never noticed before. Trying to setup a home theatre for our home entailed
many expenditures so the reasonable cost of the Oppo was appreciated..
So much sophisticated technology within reach of most people. The most fun I have with my setup is when I bring up a movie for visitors...
It's always a stopper...conversations....other activities....everyone
just settles in to watch and be amazed. By now you must know that I'm
really happy with my Oppo!
