Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACDCustomer Review: Oppo DV 981HD Summary: 5 Stars
I have my Oppo 981HD connected via HDMI line to a new Sony KDL-40Z4100. If I'm playing a new release DVD, especially one digitally mastered, It's about 95% of what Blu Ray can show me. No joke!
I have looked at both a Sony BDP-S300 Blu Ray player and the upscaling Oppo 981 with the same movie; the difference is negligible. The movie was 'The Cleaner.' Obviously the format is different and I used a Blu ray in the Sony player and a "regular" DVD in the Oppo. The 981HD does not play blu ray.
I have no specs to back this claim up, but I could easily see how VERY close they were in performance. The Oppo 981HD really DOES upscale standard def video to NEAR HD. Blu Ray surpasses the upscaling Oppo in a few small areas, such as fine detail under steady motion (even with my 120hz panel.) And there is some noticible Blu Ray advantage in the area of super fine detail. Also, these observations may be more or less obvious on different movies.
Blu ray is mind blowing with some movies. When you get your Blu Ray player, check out Happy Feet if you have a HD 1080p monitor. You can see amazing detail, such as subtle air movement across fine down on the baby penguins. Eyelash color - that kind of stuff - it's seriously amazing.
The Oppo probably won't quite give you that kind of detail, but for $200 less - MAN is it close! Not to mention it plays just about every type of audio and video disk under the sun - less Blu Ray.
Customer Review: Sharp picture, great product, and a useful cable! Summary: 5 Stars
I had been using a low end progressive scan Philips DVD player with component video connections to my Panasonic 42" 720P plasma. I didn't like the softness of the picture. I saw that this Oppo had good reviews and decided to try it out.
This DVD player performs as advertised. The picture looks great. Setup wasn't that bad, although I am not convinced I have everything tuned just right. I sometimes notice skintones can be a little blotchy in scenes with a lot of light. It could be my TV -- since my lowend player over softened everything and this player's video is very sharp.
So far I have not found a DVD in my collection that this DVD player can't handle. I have been able to detect an occasional slow chapter change during playback of some DVDs (e.g. Night at the Museum) but it isn't a long pause that would make me think there is a problem -- just a noticeable pause.
Although I am using audio out through HDMI (a nice feature) I have played around with the PCM out, and connected some old BA735 digital speakers up. It gives new life to those speakers! Speaking of audio -- there are a lot of options on this unit.
The HDMI cable is a very nice touch. It is long enough to be useful! Very thoughtful of Oppo to include an accessory that really is useful!
The DV981HD has a lot of features that I have not tried. Most important to me, though, it has done everything that I paid for.
Customer Review: Amazing picture, quality, and price !!! Summary: 5 Stars
This unit is amazing. My friend Dean told me about it here on Amazon. He was like this DVD player Oppo has the best reviews on Amazon for an upconverting DVD player. I was like Oppo? It sounds like some Clown's name, lol.
I read all the reviews and ordered it. It took a while to get it, as it was out of stock, but when I received it, boy was I floored.
On my Toshiba 62HM196 62" 1080p Dlp televison, ALL of my Standard Dvd's look VERY clear, clean, and sharp. This player makes my old 80's and 60's movies look good as well. Black levels are truely black, and fleshtones look natural. I find it hard to find any video noise when watching my Dvds'.
With a 19" Digital Samsung PC monitor and my top of the line Dell XPS computer, the picture doesn't look as good as they do on my 62" Toshiba Dlp with the Oppo. I am VERY impressed.
The unit itself is sleek brushed black metal, with a slim design and a nice remote(should light up, only glows in the dark, but still nice). The only thing Oppo should have done, is make the tray pop out more to place your DVD in. It only comes out about 80% of the unit, so you have to be carefull not to scratch your DVD putting it in and taking it out of the player.
This has to be one of the best products Amazon sells. Especially for the price, fee shipping,(Overnight shipping was only $3.99 with Amazon Prime) and quality. Buy it.
Customer Review: Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player is worth a look Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this DVD player to replace an old SONY DVD player that was VERY outdated. I'm not sure if the difference in the newer DVD players has me impressed or this bad boy is just the crème of the crop. The features on this DVD player are in-line with today's modern DVD players. The DIVX and SACD built-in features are nice to have for those of you that run across multiple DVD formats within your media library. The instructions were easy to read and follow, the remote could use some enhancing, but who doesn't have a universal remote these days anyway?
The most impressive thing about this player is the quality of the picture. I have a Toshiba HD DLP television and the picture is better than anything I have seen to date. It's crisp, clear, and just loosk great. I am still working out some of the setup for my surround sound stereo system but the audio quality seems up to par so far. Lastly, I purchased the black version and this piece of equipment has to be one of the best looking that I have seen. The blue LED display has a very modern and sleek look to it, and the height of the player is just what I needed, it's REAL skinny!
If you are looking for a quality, high-end DVD player that looks good, I would highly consider this DVD player. I've had it for about 3 months now and experienced no issues and my TV was already set for 16:9 resolution, so I just plugged it in and was ready to go.
Customer Review: Do yourself a favor and Buy It! Summary: 5 Stars
Oppo is an amazing brand, and I am SO glad I discovered them. The brand and this unit reeks of quality; even the packaging is impressive.
I wanted to get the most out of my new HDTV, and the addition of this unit made all the difference. It certainly delivers, without sending you into sticker shock. This unit is a great solution for anyone who doesn't want to duplicate their entire DVD collection with overpriced HDDVDs. This breathes new life into your old DVD collection without compromising on quality. Definitely the "sweet spot" when it comes to cost and image quality.
I'm sure I could tweak settings and improve a few things, but I'm happy as a clam with a very basic setup.
This unit is currently mated to an Olevia 47" LCD (high altitude prohibits plasma), an older high-end Pioneer home theater system with Cerwin-Vega Redline 12" front and 10" rear speakers, a Yamaha subwoofer, and a JBL 6" triple-speaker center.
Run your movies through a good theater system with this Oppo, using HDMI, and you have a top-notch theater experience in the comfort of home.
I only wish Oppo made a Universal remote for this unit. That would be the frosting on the cake.
An excellent value for the money; you won't find anything better in quality for anywhere near the price.
Keep up the good work, Oppo!
