Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACDCustomer Review: Until you get your HD or BlueRay, you need this Oppo DV-981HD Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first dedicated DVD player. I did some research and it seemed this Oppo DV-981HD with upconverting to near HD quality was the one to beat. I'd say I more than got my money's worth.
This plays every format, does everything anyone would want a DVD player to do, looks good, works fine right out of the box (I haven't had to adjust anything).
It's not too hard to figure out e.g., using the remote to toggle through choices. Anyone with more experience than I in using a remote will do fine. One good thing to point out in this age of buying a complex consumer electronics device and finding out the documentation about how to use it is on a CD ROM! Even if you have a PC, not everyone, myself included, likes squinting at a computer display to find out how to make it go directly to the channel I want, let alone something more complex. I like to snuggle up to a manual on a rainy Saturday afternoon and learn how to use my new gadget that way. This OPPO DV-981HD has an excellent printed manual - and entirely in english! Imagine that!
The quality in upshifting DVD to view on my digital TV (an Olevia 232v - highly recommended and only $600 at CircuitCity when I bought it) is superb. It is very near the quality of 1080i off air HDTV reception I get from local stations. If you want better quality on your video, you'll just have to get a BlueRay or HD DVD player for $500 to $1000 (you might as well buy a Playstation 3 for $600 just for its ability to play BlueRay videos).
For half the price of the newer formats, this is a great buy. And, until Netflix or your local DVD store start stocking HD disks, this is your best choice.
An important note: THIS COMES WITH AN HDMI CABLE LONG ENOUGH FOR MOST USES! Those $80 HDMI cables are a ripoff anyhow. It's nice to know you won't have to fork over more than you already have. The included HDMI cables works fine.
Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Why YOU need this DVD player! Points to consider. Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, I had never heard of OPPO until I found them on Amazon and the AVS message boards. From all the positive feedback I read, I figured this had to be a good unit. For the cost though, I said, "forget it, I'll pay a little more and just by a Blu-Ray player instead." It wasn't until more careful thought that I realized my thinking was wrong.
This DVD player specializes in upconverting and playing standard DVD's in near HD quality. Sure, the HD players also upconvert, but this one EXCELLS at it. I don't know about everyone else, but I have lots of regular DVD's including, my family home videos. I definately want them to look as good as possible on my HDTV for many years. Additional bonuses are that it can be easily made region-free and can skip the FBI and trailers.
Luckily, I live near the corporate headquarters and was able to pick up this unit there, since it was backordered on Amazon at the time. The people there were very helpful. The company has a 30-day complete satisfaction guarantee for a full refund. All they want is feedback on why you are returning the unit for future development. Oppo is very confident that they have a great product and is willing to stand behind it.
As far a performance, it is awesome! After having high expectations after all my research, I thought I would be a little dissapointed. The picture is amazing. It is easy to operate and takes very little room. Because of this unit, I'm now in no hurry to upgrade to a HD player. I can do without the ~$25/DVD cost. I'll keep watching my regular DVDs upconverted to HD with this great unit and miss nothing. Sure, I'll someday be in the market for a HD player, but I'll still be keeping the OPPO for my regular DVDs.
Customer Review: The greatest dvd player i've ever owned. Summary: 5 Stars
I am so blown away by this player that I couldn't be happier about the money i spent on it. I feel this player is worth every penny of the price.
The picture on a flat screen 32" LCD HD Emerson. The dvd's i own that say "remastered" versions looked like i was looking out a window rather than at a tv screen. Previously i ha all kinds of problems with my dvd player telling me disc cannot be played, discs skipping mid movie, whole chapters not being playable, a disc i honestly thought was defective in a box set but everything i've thrown at this Oppo it has played and quickly too. You don't have long loading times when you first put a dvd in. I have picture cd's, avi discs, divx movies, mpegs on cd and this Oppo plays it ALL. I also found out my tv doesn't support full 1080p resolution so i'm only using the 1080i resolution and STILL getting a terrific picture.
I couldn't wait to try out the SACD decoder for an SACD 5.1 CD of Dark Side of The Moon and the sound won't play through a "Digital/Optical" Cable. According to the user manual it's not supported due to copyright resctictions of DVD-Audio and SACD. You have to use the 5.1 ANALOGUE channel output. It plays through the TV usng the HDMI connection just fine, just not the receiver withou the additional analogue connection.
The options available to you through the setup menu should fit anyone.
this player didn't take long to set up and just start watching movies.
Anything new is gonna take a little getting used to and is to be expected, but so far only having this a week or two i've never been happier with a dd player. I'm thinking a lot of the picture quality has to do with Oppo's True Life technology video processing which can be turned on or off. I reccomend keeping it on by all means.
Customer Review: OPPO-tunity Knocks With This DVD Player.... Summary: 5 Stars
I know, bad pun, but it got your attention didn't it?? My story on this amazing DVD player. Recently bought a LG 37" LCD TV with 720p max picture, and already have a home theater sound system. I've heard about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, and am not interested in either due to the fact I didn't want to rebuy my DVD collection from scratch. After hearing about upconverting DVD players, and the name Oppo ("what's an Oppo?" I asked), I decided to check on specs and reviews before possibly plunging in to buy this DVD player.
After reading all these glorifying reviews here and elsewhere, I decided to purchase one from Amazon. Took two days to get, kudos to Amazon. Very nice packaging, easy to read instruction manual, easy set up (comes with HDMI cable), I hooked it up to my TV and home theater system. The picture quality is outstanding, however, this isn't HD DVD or Blu-Ray quality, but it comes very close in my opinon. Also, remember that the quality is only as good as the DVD source (just like CD's), so older DVD's may not shine as well as ones made recently, but even the older ones benefit some with the upconversion. The tray seems somewhat flimsy, and the remote looks kinda busy, but the proof is in the picture quality. Went through different DVD's like Pixar (Toy Story, Incredibles, etc), as well as King Kong, Terminator, Harry Potter, etc., and the picture was brilliant with colors, detail, and sharpness. Played two PAL discs I had with no problems, but if you do have any problems, there is a region free hack for you to convert the player to region free, ask Oppo, or look within the review section. So, for $229 plus free shipping at Amazon, take the Oppo-tunity to purchase this DVD player. Well worth the bucks, and highly recommended.
Customer Review: Best DVD player I've ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little apprehensive about ordering a DVD player online from a company I had never heard about. But I'm glad I did. This is an awesome DVD player.
I recently bought a Sharp 42" 1080p LCD HDTV and I didn't want to take part in the format wars going on between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Plus those players are just to expensive right now. I decided to buy an upconverting DVD player that would convert regular DVDs to 1080p. I have to say that the Oppo produces images so fine that I personally can't tell them apart from real HD movies.
And the sound coming from the 5.1 analog outputs is so fabulous that I'm enjoying my SACD and DVD-Audio discs with new appreciation. I couldn't get sound from the digital coax output, though. I'm not blaming the player at this point; perhaps it's the cable or a loose connection somewhere. But I'm not too concerned right now since the 5.1 analog gives superior sound quality anyway, being uncompressed.
This player plays almost every kind of disc you can imagine (except the true HD discs). I had to have one that would play SACD and DVD-A, and this one does the trick.
Oppo even packages this player in classy style. The player comes in the box packaged in a nifty cloth pouch fastened with Velcro and the Oppo logo on the front. It wasn't simply wrapped in foam or plastic and fastened with tape. Not a real big deal, but I appreciate the extra little extras Oppo gives, including the HDMI cable that is provided.
It's a little more expensive than most regular DVD players, but it does so much more, and it does it so well. It's worth the price. I highly recommend it.
