Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioCustomer Review: Works well as a multi-system/converting DVD playere for standard definition televisions Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the OPPO DV-980H as a replacement multi-system DVD player for a standard definition multi-system television. I wanted a DVD player that would also help with up-converting the output from regular DVDs for viewing on a medium size HDTV in case I decided to upgrade to such a TV in the future. I also wanted a high quality DVD player that had not been altered by a third party in order to make the DVD multi-system code-free, since such alterations void the warrantee, and I have had mixed results regarding quality of products from such vendors. This DVD player has been perfect for my purposes and I am going to buy one for my oldest son.
After changing the output from NTSC to automatic, and entering the code that is available with a quick web search, and, I think, the same as mentioned by a reviewer for the OPPO DV-981H, I have had no difficulty playing British DVDs on the television. It is also possible, once the code is entered, to watch the PAL region 2 DVDs on a US NTSC television, by leaving the output on NTSC. The quality of the picture on the standard defintion television is outstanding.
Customer Review: Excellent upconvert DVD and MP4 player Summary: 5 Stars
I use it mainly for playing Divx and Xvid MP4 video files. The USB interface allows me to play from my USB drive or a portable hard drive, without having to burn the files on a DVD or CD. That is a bless!!!! The srt and sub subtitles can be turn on and off. The picture quality is excellent, matching the quality of playing on a laptop. Currently, the player plays Divx and Xvid, but not H.264. I am expecting the next generation will add support for H.264 codec.
I only tried once with playing a DVD, the LOTR - return of the king. It is as good as any players out there, if not better. Since I don't have a blue ray, hence cannot compare how good the "upconvert" is. But remember, regular DVD has the 720x480 natively. The high definition is 1080. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to expect this player to match a HD or blue ray player.
Overall, it has been working as expected since it arrived 2 weeks ago. The on-screen menu is the only factor OPPO needs to improve in its next line of product. The menu fonts are ancient(80' style) and menu navigation is not intuitive.
Customer Review: What a bargain. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a outstanding product for the money.
The OPPO 980H is a excellent value. My primary interest is music concert DVDS although I do watch a few movies. Its upscaling to 1080i greatly improves the picture quality of most DVDS. The most pleasant suprise was the excellent job it does with music cds and sacds. I listen to alot of music and had purchased a SACD player for 5 times as much as I paid for the OPPO and the Oppo beats it hands down. If you only use it as a CD player it is well worth the price. I have it paired up with a Yamaha RX777 stereo receiver(to me music only sounds real in stereo, forget surround sound) and a pair of PSB Image T65 speakers. Total system cost about $1700. You could spend 10 times that and not get better sound. I know because I have done that in the past. If you want to have Ella or Frank sing for you in person this will do it. Again the OPPO is a outstanding product.
Customer Review: It simply works and works exceptionally well Summary: 5 Stars
OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio
The OPPO 980 upconverting DVD player is a sleek looking and exceptionally well performing unit. I was looking for an upscaling DVD player since I am still unsure of the ultimate Hi Def standard for DVDs as the BluRay vs. HD DVD format wars continue.
I have this connected to my Panasonic 58 inch 1080p plasma TV and the picture is amazing. I like the upconverting that takes place in the OPPO more than that in that in the Panasonic as I believe the algorithms are better in the OPPO and the output is stellar.
I apreciated that fact that this unit CAME with a HDMI cable and the gloss black looks great with the TV.
Yes you can buy cheap units from WalMart and from other eTailers but the OPPO has the best picture quality by far and while $169 seems high for a DVD player the video output quality (and the 7.1 audio support) cannot be beat.
Customer Review: Best DVD Player I've Owned Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best DVD Player I've owned. I will keep my eyes out for other Oppo products every time I upgrade my electronics in the future. I bought this player shortly after purchasing a PS3 and upgrading my TV to a 42" 1080p. My Blue Rays looked great, but neither the PS3 nor my old standard DVD player could make a decent picture out of regular DVDs. This Oppo Player solved that beautifully. There is little difference between an upconverted DVD and most Blue Rays, because most BDs are not shot with high-def cameras anyway. This equipment proves to me that DVD will continue to have a large market for many years to come, even in an HD environment, as a cheaper alternative to BD. PLEASE OPPO MAKE MORE PRODUCTS! These guys know quality electronics. Everything about the product is classy as hell. The only minor flaw I find is that the on-screen menus have a pretty rustic look to them, but they're effective and easy enough to navigate, and in EVERY other WAY THIS PRODUCT IS FREAKIN PERFECT. If you want a sweet Upscaling DVD Player, BUY THIS ONE!
