Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioCustomer Review: Worth the extra $100.00 Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to bite the bullet and buy an Oppo after my Phillips DVD upconverting player died after only 9 months.
The biggest upside is the USB support, AFAIK. I can play DIVX/MP4 movies from my thumb drive. This is going to save me a ton of money from burning DVDs/CDs.
The Oppo plays at least one format that my old Phillips would not play.
Also, I've got Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull playing right now and the picture is amazing! I can definitely see the difference in both the clarity of the picture and the color. The Oppo is upconverting to 1080i on a 42" LCD TV.
The sound is very good as well, but I'm going to need to upgrade to a decent receiver to really pass judgement. I can say that the Virtual Surround seems to work better than the virtual surround (which I turned off) on the Phillips.
Another benefit over the Phillips is how much more quickly this DVD player turns on and responds to commands. I hated how slow the Phillips was.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the quality, the packaging, and even the looks of the Oppo.
I'm a movie lover, and to me, this player helps me to enjoy movies much more so than a crappy Walmart player.
Customer Review: careful: this is not HD-DVD compatible Summary: 5 Stars
this is an awesomely packaged piece of electronic hardware. unfortunately, it does not play HD-DVD. i have no intention of supporting Blu-ray. i want a DVD player that plays HD-DVD's. i usually do not make mistakes like this, but oh well. i only have 1 HDTV, so i will be returning this unit in exchange for an HD-DVD compatible unit.
that said, if you want to wait until this silly format war is over, but you want to watch your current DVD collection on an HDTV in high resolution, get this DVD player. it is packaged quite impressively. the HDMI cable that comes with the unit is the best looking piece of cable i have ever seen come with any piece of electronics. usually you have to buy your own cables to get anything decent. the other cables included are pretty standard, but everything is included. the hookup is straight forward and well documented in the manual.
i really like this player. it is too bad it does not play HD-DVD...
UPDATE:
as Blu-ray has won the format war, i still stand by this review. just switch that last line to Blu-ray instead of HD...
so far no high def players are DivX compatible yet, so i won't be doing anything w/Blu-ray anyway...
Customer Review: Great DVD Player Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this DVD player in September 2007, along with a new receiver, and am very pleased with the purchase. I don't have a high-def TV and don't have any plans to buy one yet so I had no need to buy a high-def player. This one has great up-converting abilities if I do improve the quality of my monitor and it should provide great video quality for some years to come. This player has EXCELLENT video quality. It has all the right high quality hookups that one could want (HDMI,optical, digital coaxial, etc.) Since Oppo makes the components for almost all the other players on the market, I decided to buy an Oppo brand instead of another brand. I understand that I could have had a similar or identical "other" player and possibly for less but I guess I just wanted a "unique and original" name with my components. This is a very high quality component for those people who have no plans to upgrade to a high-def TV and have no need for a high-def DVD player. If you have plans to buy a high-def TV, than I recommend buying a good high def player because it will give you better quality. If you do own this player, you will enjoy the quality output regardless of what monitor you are viewing it on for years to come.
Customer Review: OPPO DV-980H - SACD/DVDA PLAYER! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this player a year ago for SACD / DVD-Audio playback ONLY using HDMI to my receiver. I was frustrated for years with the analog method of six channel playback and was ready for digital so this player fit the bill. I'm glad I purchased it in time because from the looks of things, this player is now out of stock.
Playback of video was of no concern to me as I have other players for that duty. Still, I checked video playback anyway and found it to be excellent for those of you who need to know. Many options are available in both audio / video so if you have older systems, you're not out of luck.
As for playback of SACD and DVDA with HDMI? PERFECT. My disc collection in those formats have never sounded better! No matter what I choose to play, they all sound great. No more adjusting to fit the program, no more wishing for true digital across the board. Finally, my SACDs and DVDAs just sound RIGHT. And that's the best thing I can say about this player. Run out and grab one if you can find one!
PS: Too bad HDMI came a little too late to save the formats. Perhaps they may get a second chance soon now that Sony is putting SACD back in their new BD players.
Customer Review: Oppo + Optoma = Optimal Optics Summary: 5 Stars
I actually use the OPPO DV-980H upconverter in my classroom! I connected the upconverter via HDMI-DVI (adapter purchased separately: Tripp Lite DVI D MALE TO HDMI FEMALE) to an Optoma EP719 DLP Portable Projector 2000. With the addition of a high power projection screen and a decent surround sound, my middle school students are a captive audience. Science never looked so good in seventh grade! I have had absolutely NO problems or difficulties using this upconverter with the DLP projector, and the seven foot projected image looks nearly flawless at 1080i. With a picture that large, I notice a significant difference in the quality of images when upconverted from 480p. I still have yet to take the Oppo home with me to use with my HDTV, but I imagine the results would be at least satisfactory, though possibly not as stunning as seen when using the projector. I am very satisfied with this purchase, as in its current role it exceeds the expectations I had set for it.
