Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio

Customer Review: Top-notch upconverting DVD player, and great for CD, HDCD, SACD!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this player to upconvert DVD's for my new 1080i Sony 3LCD rear projection 42" HDTV, and for critical listening to CD/HDCD, and especially SACD on my high-end audio system (2-channel, McIntosh amplification, Magneplanar speakers). It works flawlessly for both my DVD and CD music collection, and the picture looks phenomenal in 720p and 1080i (capability of my HDTV)! SACD sounds GLORIOUS, even in stereo! If you love music, and want to hear it at it's best possible sonics, you owe it to yourself to buy some SACD's, and listen on a good set of headphones, or a high end setup. Oppo's customer service is first-rate, and they always promptly and intelligently answered my e-mails the same day. The DV-980H is a STEAL, and quite possibly, the best 'bang per buck' 'universal player' on the market today! The DV-980H 'reeks of quality' through and through, and the packaging was solid and first-rate, with the player carefully wrapped in a black glove/sock with the Oppo logo on it. This has been one of my best consumer electronics purchases and experiences to this day, and I have to pass along mega-kudos to Oppo for all their success and customer service. They are a shining example of how consumer electronics companies should do business, and they have earned, and deserve my respect and future business!

Customer Review: Excellent dvd player
Summary: 5 Stars

Im writing about this player but have the earlier model.I have the 970 which is a little different but still a fine player.our standard dvds will look like new again with the upconversion feature. It really makes a difference.THis player along with all oppo players has a secret code you can put into it and it will change the region code to anything you want.i have mine set to region 0 which allows it to play any dvd made in the world. It will play pal dvds also. You can buy a disk from england and it will play on the player.I just bought one from australia and it plays perfect.A lot of times a movie may only be available in another country and it wont play on your standard dvd.The hack is easy to find.Just search for oppo region code hack and you will find it.It is four numbers and then opens a secret area of the player and there you simply change to region 0.Its very simple. All you do is push setup on your remote and then enter 9210 and it displays a menu and you simply enter 0 to make it region free and it will play anything. After yu enter the 0 mine wouldnt do anything so i turned it off and on again and then it will be fine.If you need help email me-pennynleigh@msn.com.beleive me it works like a charm.Im not supposed to say this and amazon may pull my review, but maybe they wont.Lets hope for the best.

Customer Review: Great for audio.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my 5th Universal DVD player that could play both DVD Audio and SACD. My last player was the Denon 3910, which originally sold for $1500 and is known for its outstanding audio. I bought a new receiver which doesn't have the 6 analog plugs for surround sound audio so I decided to go to an HDMI universal player, and there aren't that many to choose from. This Oppo really surprised me. It plays DVD Audio and SACD through the HDMI and the sound is fantastic through my Denon AVR2300CI receiver. One of the problems with surround sound music has always been lack of proper bass management or low bass. But the bass plays perfectly and has a solid punch with this player, better than the Denon 3910! I was ready to sell all of my audiophile surround sound discs, fortunately now I don't have to. It also has an HDCD decoder and HDCD cds, which are a bargain for audiophiles, sound fantastic. Regular cds that are recorded well also sound great. My system now sounds better than it ever has even tough this player sells for a lot less than the one it replaced. I paid $125 for a used one and it may be the biggest bargain I've ever got in audio. As for video, up conversion to 1080p is good but if you have a 1080p TV you need to get a Blu Ray player for the best picture.

Customer Review: This Is Really 6 Top-Quality Players in One
Summary: 5 Stars

I do not understand the negative reviews or the knocks this player gets for its price. The Oppo DV-980H is really 6 players in one:

- top-notch upconverting DVD video player
- audiophile quality SACD, HDCD and CD player (through analog outputs and HDMI)
- audiophile quality DVD-Audio player (through analog outputs and HDMI)
- MP3/WMA player via discs or the USB port
- hi-res image player via discs or the USB port
- AVI/DiVx player via discs or USB

Now if you only use this to watch DVD video, then yes, better values (with similar performance) are to be had elsewhere. But if you are looking for any 3 of the above features, this is a great value. The machine itself oozes class (except for the disc tray) and it operates lightning fast even when using the HDMI output. It even works through HDMI if the display is turned off - this is essential if all you feel like doing is listen to CDs, SACDs or DVD-Audios. I have the Oppo connected to an Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver (which can decode advanced audio over HDMI) and the pairing sounds just wonderful.

To top it all, you get responsive customer service and firmware maintenance. I mean, what else can you reasonably expect for less then $170?

Customer Review: For Now Better Than Blu-Ray
Summary: 5 Stars

Some reviewers are able to write a review of an electronic component based only its specifications. I have to live with it for awhile.

I've used the Oppo DV-980H for several months now after having considered purchasing its big brother the DV-981HD and the several high-definition video formats. I'm extremely satisfied with my choice.

While its video playback and upconversion capabilities do not exceed those of many HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players, regular DVD's look excellent when outputted via HDMI my new Panasonic TH-42P700U plasma TV. The picture is so good, in fact, that I may never opt for a Blu-Ray player if downloading or streaming HD video becomes a viable option. I would be tempted, however by an Oppo Blu-Ray player (hint!).

There are dozens of less-expensive upconverting DVD players on the market, but none so competently handles the Oppo's broad range of audio and video protocols. I am especially impressed that the Oppo plays PAL DVD's and SACD audio.

When the cost Blu-Ray players and disks decline and their technology matures, my Oppo may be relegated to the bedroom, but for the forseeable future it sets the cost-effective standard for audio and video playback.
