Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioCustomer Review: I Love my OPPO!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled upon the OPPO DVD player on cnet... I had just gotten my first High Definition TV (42" Pioneer Elite) so I wanted a DVD player that would look good on my new TV. After reading the other reviews on Amazon about the OPPO I decided NOT to play the format wars (Blu-Ray vs. HD) but rather preserve my somewhat substantial investment in conventional DVDs.
When the OPPO arrived I could tell it was a piece of equipment designed and made with pride. It is very easy to hook up with the supplied HDMI cable (you also get the yellow video cable and a pair of audio cables if you don't have HDMI) and performs flawlessly. The documentation is very well written and informative. The unit is simple to use with lots of great features. Some have felt the unit is a little on the expensive side but if you are going to use the HDMI hookup OPPO INCLUDES a cable that could cost you $30 or $40. Yes I could go to Best Buy and get something a little cheaper but then I would have to pay extra for the cable so where's the savings?
All my movies look great on the OPPO. Last night I was watching The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and you could see every detail in every frame, right down to the mortar in the wall in the opening scene. Color movies look terrific but I have been absolutely amazed at how nice black-and-white movies look on this machine.
Once the format war has ended I look forward to my next OPPO!
Customer Review: Good price, easy setup, works great. Summary: 5 Stars
Although I have a Blu-Ray player, I bought this DVD player simply because I don't have the patience to wait the 1-2 minutes for the Blu-Ray player to power-up, open the door, eject then start an ordinary DVD.
Although you can get this running without reading any instructions, the equipment will run much better if you follow the easy to understand set up instructions. It only takes a minute or two.
Using Spiderman as a reference movie, the video/audio upscaling is terrific. When I played Spiderman, I said, OMG! I can't believe it's the same disk. Obviously, while not Blu-Ray quality, if you have all HDMI equipment equipped for 1080p, you can really enjoy your current stock of DVD movies.
For kicks, I'm going to rent Spiderman in Blu-Ray and compare the two by switching back and forth. I'll let you know the results of the comparison.
Of all the devices I bought this year (I broke down and finally ditched all of my 15+ year old A/V equipment), this was the absolute easiest device to setup and use and the biggest bang for the buck.
It's simple, thin, lightweight, loads and starts very quickly.
Another really nice feature: It'll remember where you left off on the last 5 DVDs you played. My Blu-Ray player at over 6x the cost can't do that.
Get it, you'll love it.
Customer Review: This gave new life to our Home Theater System....but problem reading all DVDs Summary: 5 Stars
We needed a new DVD player to go with our new Samsung 52" HDTV and wanted the best, so gave this Oppo 980 a try. The most impressive thing it has done is breath new life into our older Home theater system (5 speaker 5.1 Sony dream machine). The sound is fantastic...we feel as though we have gottn a new sound system with this Oppo. The picture is very good, although we only notice a slight difference between its picture and our old standard DVD player...with brighter and richer colors, but not that much sharper. I was thinking of returning it because of its only minor improvement in picture, but I can't part with the improved sound, so we plan to keep it.
GREAT remote control...best one I have ever seen.
I would recommend the unit primarily as a boost to your sound system. As an upconverting DVD player, I think it does the job, but if this were its only offering...I would save my money and buy a cheaper upconverting DVD player.
Addendum after having player for 3 weeks:
We unfortunately discovered that this player will not play all DVDs. We have the Seinfeld TV series on Standard DVD and the player would not recognize any of the disks at all. Returned player because of this since we have an extensive TV collection and fear this problem will appear with other TV show DVDs.
Customer Review: Great DVD player for the money Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent product at a great price. I just purchased a new Sony XBR4 HDTV and purchased this Oppo DVD player to upgrade my out of date Sony DVD player. A perfect match. The picture and sound quality are awesome. Plus this Oppo has a USB port which is great for quick viewing pictures or listening to music. It displays digital pictures in a slideshow with amazing detail. Again, for the price, it is a must have if you are in the market for a new DVD player and don't feel like spending four or five hundred dollars on an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player. If those HD-DVD and Blu-ray players are better, it can't be by much.
UPDATE-12/03/07- I had a friend of mine bring over his Sony Blu-Ray player to hook up to my TV to see what true 1080P looks like. We put in a Blu-Ray DVD of Pirates of the Carrib. I thought the picture couldnt get any better than what the OPPO upconverting DVD players were putting out, but I was wrong. The picture with Blu-Ray was unbelieveable. You really get the "looking out a window" feeling. If you have a 1080P TV, to get it's full potential you should really get a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. Right now I am still very happy with the OPPO,but I will eventually buy a Blu-Ray or HDDVD player. But as most have said, I will wait until one format emerges as the winner of the format war and the prices go down.
Customer Review: This Product Is Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I recieved my 980 H today. All I wanted was better picture quality and when I put in "The Green Mile" just to test the unit it was overwhelming. I read many reviews on many different upconverting units and was not impressed until I found this Oppo brand which i never had heard of. Reading the reviews got me excited and the fact you get the HDMI cable. They also have a 981 model for more money so I called Oppo tech support and they told me for my 37" LCD TV the 980 was a good fit and also the newest model they have. The 981 was for pictures over 50 inches. The packaging is a work of art and the protective pouch with the velcro closure shows you they take pride in the product. I might mention the included HDMI cable rivals anything Monster puts out and all the hype they give you at Curcuit City on spending money on cables which is nothing but pure profit.I ordered a $12 6 foot cable by Cables To Go along with my order since I did not have one for my TV and it is more than capable of doing what it was intended to do. Hats off to Oppo and their customer and tech support whom I both talked to without even owning one of their products and they were pleasant and courteous and did not buzz me off but spent quality time explaining and answering my questions. Now if all companies were like that what a beautiful world this would be.
