Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioCustomer Review: Nearly Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
It has style, and it works!
The Pros: Owning this for nearly a month, the Oppo DV-980H can only be described as near perfect. Outshining my previous Panasonic, Toshiba & Denon players the DV-980H video is near flawless, even on my 32" JVC with a 1024x768 CRT. There is no Chroma bug, jitter or flawed color pallete. Signal strength is awesome using the S-Video connection, preferred for CRT TV's. It correctly plays discs the other players I've had could not.
Audio is superb with excellent separation, range & response on either the TOS or discrete outputs. Signal strength is again excellent. Those with a SACD or DVD-Audio collection will appreciate the HDMI or Discrete outputs. Since I use the Discrete and TOS they are the only ones I can comment on, but I can say it is best described as "Opulent audio bliss!" through a Yamaha RX-V 740 with 6.1 surround. Performance surpasses the Yahama & Marantz CD player's I own.
The casing is matte black with a matching faceplate and blue VF Display. The front USB port allows HDD/Flash devices for audio playback of your music collection. The settings menu is VERY, VERY extensive for player configuration to match any TV/Monitor and Amplifier/Receiver type. The device itself runs cool tempratures even sandwiched between a Cable DVR & Power Correction Unit.
The Cons: The carriage is slightly noisy during transport but silent (yes, silent) during playback. The display is a bit small.
As an Electronics Specialist for a major retailer I see a lot of equipment pass by me, it is a shame we do not offer Oppo products as my DV-980H is the first to satisfy my extremely demanding nature. Rest assured I'm requesting Oppo be introduced to our product lineup.
Customer Review: Certainly a Fine Machine Summary: 5 Stars
The Oppo Up-Converting DVD Player arrived just a day ago and it's already proving a great purchase. It can play difficult discs and discs from the 'O' or zero zone as well as the North American Region Zone without trouble. On discs that previously were lacking in definition, a real issue on a large wide screen television, the Oppo player excels. What were once rather lifeless and dull images have been positively revitalized!
Newer already quite excellent DVD's appear sharper and the colors leaner and better defined.
Set up - at least for my needs - was the easiest I've ever experienced. You plug in the power cord, attach the HDMI connection to the television and you're done. The television plays the sound through the HDMI lead.
For much better sound you are offered the full smorgasbord of audio
connections. I'm still playing around with these.
The machine easily handled SACD CD discs and several others such as the less commonly seen DVD Audio.
Summing Up: If you have an available HDMI connection this player should offer practically all possible viewing choices. You can now play some foreign films, those with the zero or universal zone label, as well of course North American region stuff, significantly upgrade the picture on your older DVDs, and of course try any number of other formats.
The key here is the HDMI connection - although the player will handle a plethora of formats, it really struts its stuff using its HDMI lead, and again, be sure your televion or monitor has such a lead to take full advantage of this DVD player.
A great product and I'm happy to agree with the many satisfied customers.
Customer Review: Worthy of the Excellent Rating Summary: 5 Stars
SUMMARY: This DVD player is worth the excellent ratings it has gotten on several websites. The up conversion feature makes you want to pull out your older DVDs and appreciate them again. The $169 price is perfect and does not reflect the stunning picture quality produced with this component. The device is thin, sleek and unobtrusive. It fits neatly with other home theater systems. HDMI provides both video and 7.1 channel audio digital outputs to deliver the best picture and sound quality through one cable. The HDMI cable is included with the player. Component video outputs are also available for those who have not yet fully upgraded their systems to 100% digital format. To get sound when using the component video you must also connect either the digital (optical or coax) or the composite (RCA analog) audio outputs to your TV or stereo receiver.
PACKAGING/MANUAL/IMAGES: The packaging is well designed The player comes neatly packaged in a soft inner envelope suspended between foam in the box. The unboxing is equivalent to opening a computer from Apple. No excess foam is included. It is surprising just how thin the unit actually is when you open the box. The manual is straight forward and easy to follow. Detailed high definition images of the player are available at the manufacturer's website (oppodigital).
ALTERNATIVES: Oppo offers the OPPO DV-981HD DVD player for $229. Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD Despite being $60 more expensive, this player does not offer component video output or 7.1 channel audio features.
Customer Review: The best DVD player I have owned Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this player based on the reviews here and on CNET. I have to say this is the best DVD player I have owned yet. Now I must clarify that the last player we owned we purchased 5 years ago; so it has been a while and some of the features I found unique may actually be quite common.
I love the up-converting technology. Our family watches very little network TV. For the most part we watch DVDs. Since we have little kids we are usually watching Disney DVDs or older sitcoms. Our kids love Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island. Let me tell you neither show has ever looked this good. It is not HD, but it is much better than the quality we were getting from our old player. It becomes obvious when we watch an episode of the Brady Bunch that has been partially remastered. The scenes that were remastered become brighter than those not remastered.
I like the sleek black appearance of the box and I like that I can control whether the lights on the display stay on (they are very bright in a dark room).
One feature I like is that the player will remember where you left off watching several movies. Almost all DVD players will remember the where you left off with the last DVD you were watching; this one seems to remember 3 or 4 DVD's.
I can't say enough about this player. Like they say in the review at CNET, if you don't want to plunk down several hundred dollars for a Blu-Ray then get this machine. I bought mine directly from OPPO. They were courteous and ship FedEx by default. I had my player in 2 days. Also, the OPPO if fully compatible with all the Logitech remotes.
Customer Review: not like hi-def but still looks good! Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first up-converting DVD player, still waiting for the idiotic blu-ray vs. HDDVD war to end, and I have say I was quite pleased with the picture quality. I wish I could comment on audio, but I am still saving money for a surround sound system.
This unit is paired with a Samsung 50" 5084 plasma, also highly recommended. If you expect your DVD's to look like hi-def, you will have to replace your DVD collection with Blu-ray and/or HDDVD. Up-converting players will make the DVD's look good on your increased resolution tv. Basically the picture on a DVD is a certain size, you can make it smaller without consequence, but if you spread the picture out on a big screen tv with increased resolution, picture quality will suffer. This player solves that problem.
The online picture of this unit does not do it justice. I was expecting this player to look somewhat generic, however I was suprised at how nice it looks.
Included hdmi cord is a major bonus, one which I wish other companies would do, really increases value and convenience.
I did have a slight issue with vibration noises with certain discs, not all the time. I worked with OPPO digital through email, I was very impressed with their level of customer service.
They are going to send me a new player with a shipping label at no charge even one day after the 30 day replacement period:)
In conclusion, very nice DVD player with excellent picture quality, well worth the money, great value (hdmi cord), nice looks, and great packaging.
