Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G RouterCustomer Review: Don't let the reviews scare you, this is a great product. Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first go around with the new 802.11g wireless technology. I have a cable modem at home and was able to hook up several other computers to my connections without having to pay the cable people for extra computer connections (i.e. modems, they don't care about routers.) There was a little bit of a learning curve, however, this was my first time I ever used or touched a router. I think that with any system that is new, and more so new to you, there is a small learning curve to get things working best. I heard many good things about Netgear and they have all lived up to be true thus far. I would recommend that if you are a first time wireless user that you hook up your system via actual cables and get use to your setup before trying to log on to your wireless connection. Just make sure you secure your connect (which was easy) so Joe Neighbor dosen't download Britney Spears from kazaa off your connection. One more thing, make sure you purchase the compatible part's and they are "g" or both "g and b". Same name brands might also help a little in other areas too.
Customer Review: Feels flimsy but works great Summary: 5 Stars
I gave this five stars because it does everyting I need, has an SPI firewall and has worked very reliably. This is my second Netgear router. Originally I bought an FM114P for $180 three years ago when wireless still had problems. But the FM114P worked great right out of the box with no installation and it was built from metal and was very sturdy. However this is the second failure in just over three years (first was covered under the 3yr warranty).
Since it stopped working I bought the WGR614v6 which was very cheap and had the same features as the FM114P (except no printer port). The WGR614 is plastic and feels a little flimsy but the signal strength is better than the old router. I have it installed in my basement and my office is two floors up. I consistently get an "Excellent" signal rating and have no drop outs or any other problems. Installation is screwy especiallly if you know what you want to do and just want to bypass their step by step approach. I have had the router for just over a week. System is: HP Pavillion ZD7000 laptop, Windows XP Professional, Comcast broadband service.
Customer Review: Mine + a friend's Work Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I have installed two of these routers and both installations went very well. I installed my own at home, plus one for a friend. Actually, I was able to talk the friend through the installation process by telephone. I never laid hands on it!
I recently also installed a Linksys router (sorry, don't remember model #) for a friend who had run into a problem that I couldn't figure out over the telephone. The Linksys installation and initial configuration is done by a Wizard. I quickly came to hate that Wizard because it didn't provide the first bit of failure information. No error message, nor even an error code. I got it working after about 45 minutes, but I have the advantage of being a network professional. I knew all of the PC and router things to check and set.
Important! Always check the software (firmware) version of the router, whatever brand or model. If an update is available from the vendor, install it!
In summary, I believe that Linksys is a good company with good products, but I prefer, use, and recommend this Netgear wireless router.
Customer Review: Minimal size, maximum performance and looks! Summary: 5 Stars
I traded up to this router after getting a Centrino laptop and couldn't be happier. I realize that the "g" aspect is overkill for the Centrino but it should be useful soon when the components come down in price. I was buying for the future and got such a good deal it didn't make sense to buy for the present (or past). I had a Netgear ethernet router for 2 years that worked flawlessly the entire time and the new owner reports that it also works perfectly for him. This router takes almost no room, is easy to set up, and works really well. It also looks good. I admit that I'm not a network guru by any stretch of the imagination, I'm actually barely competent. I was able, by reading only the online cues, to set this up using maximum incription to work perfectly every time with my laptop. I also set it up to prevent all devices except my laptop from accessing it. I recommend this router to anyone. You can still use your hard-wiring and your 802.11b devices though you will be ready for 5 times the wireless performance and it'll be hard to beat the deals available.
Customer Review: Just Follow The Directions Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know what peoples' problem is with this router... mine works great. I was getting 10mbps with my old LinkSys router... once day I hooked directly from cable to my computer and my speed doubled to over 20mbps... so I knew my old router was a choke point. I got this new router... and I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS on the CD Rom to hook it up and it has worked great ever since. I have never had to reboot in nearly 14 months it's been online... but like I said... that's not to say there might not be some bugs out there... but mine works great... and... you gotta follow directions... just my opinion but I think there are some people who are pretty comfortable with hooking stuff up and just hoping it will work... and those are the kinda people who will have trouble with this. The CD Rom that walks you through the installation/connection is great... easy to understand and follow... but... many people just refuse to take the time to follow the directions. I know this for a fact because I am usually the one in my family to go over to their house and fix it for them.
