Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router

Customer Review: Solid router, great for small home networks
Summary: 5 Stars

Prior to putting this in my house I was using a software router/firewall to share my internet connections on a dedicated machine. After hooking up the Netgear, I was able to setup the internet connection sharing and firewall without a problem. Though you dont get a whole lot of options to configure firewall wise, it does the job pretty well. I've had absolutely no problems with PC's connected by wire to the switch.

On the wireless side, it seems to perform the same as other WAP's that I've seen, range is limited to 40-50 feet depending on surrounding structure. One thing you must keep in mind is that 2.4ghz cordless phones will cause the connection to drop on this and most other 802.11x WAP's. The older 900mhz phones seem to work without an issue. Keep in mind that you might have other devices that could possibly interfere, (cordless bookshelf speakers, non IR remotes, etc). This is a problem with all 802.11 wireless and not just the netgear unit.

Other than those things, I'd like to note that I put the little box up about 3 months ago and havent touched it since. Its been solid and performs much better than the software firewall that i had.

Customer Review: Satellite Internet Wireless Link to Home Computers
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the WGR614 along with a Netgear WG511 54 Mbps wireless PC Card from Amazon. I use it to connect from my High Speed 2-Way DirecWay Satellite connection wirelessly to my Dell 8000 and Dell 8200 laptops, and my old Gateway desktop in my home. I purchased it primarily because I was told that some other 54 Mbps brands did not allow both b and g cards to be accessed at the same time on the same system. I installed the new g card on my 8200 with no problems at all but then when the entire system was up after about an hour I found that when using the g card on either of the laptops the other with a b card would not work. After a great deal of help from tech support we found that there is a conflict between the DirecWay DW6000 and the router. Both are addressed by http://192.168.0.1. We solved this by changing the address code for the router to 10.0.0.1 and BINGO everything was perfect. I highly recommend these products and the NETGEAR tech support system. They are the best money can buy at this time. I also found Amazon's service very good and responsive, and besides, they offered the lowest price (after rebates) I could find on the Web.

Customer Review: Easy to install. Reliable with solid connection speeds.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a good router. I originally bought a Linksys Wireless-N router to replace our old D-Link, but I couldn't get it to work with a number of wi-fi devices at home, so I went back down to wireless-G. I would have like the speed of wireless-N but I just couldn't get it to work.

Aside from that, this router was easy to install. The directions are straightforward and setup took about 15 minutes. I tested out wi-fi connection with my iPod touch and it work perfectly. We had our new network up & running very quickly.

So far, I've successfully been able to connect laptops, gaming systems (Wii/PSP), mp3 players, and smartphones. I am very satisfied with that. For some reason, I still can't connect my DSi with the network. I will look into that, though. Otherwise, I've been able to use all other devices perfectly.

Overall, I've experienced no connection loss or lag. Devices connect right away, and that makes using the network very seamless. I am enjoying this new router. We've been without our own wi-fi network for a few years, and to have one that is working properly again is nice to have.

Customer Review: Very cool

I can't comment on how Netgear compares to Linksys or D-link or any of the others, but I will say that once you go wireless, you'll never go back.

Even if you're thinking about setting up a wired ethernet system, get the wireless capability. It doesn't really cost any more (except you have to get wireless cards for any destination laptop or desktop as well) and eventually you will use it. I have the router downstairs in my home tucked away in a corner closet and I continually get a "good" to "very good" signal upstairs in my kitchen. I do actually have a desktop hooked up to an ethernet system adjacent to the router and it is really no faster. My fiancee also uses her laptop anywhere in the house.

It did take a bit of time to get the system up and working and the documentation is a bit thin, but once you register the product, you can call an 800 number which will connect you to somebody in India (at least, that's what happened to me) who will walk you through it. My guy was very knowledgeable and patient and you could have sworn he was located in some Silicon Valley call center.

Customer Review: This Router Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

I recommend this router. I went into home networking with a little trepidation, given all the negative feedback for all products (not just Netgear). However, I installed the WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router on my XP machine and was running in about 30 minutes. Very easy, step by step installation wizard. Great product for the price (I got the $20 rebate from Netgear).
Also, I installed a wireless adapter for a remote computer 2 floors away (the Netgear MA111: a medium performance USB adapter at a great price) which also turned on immediately. I'm now successfully running a wired PC, 2 wireless PC's, and a Microsoft XBOX running XBOX Live.
Finally, I was helping a friend turn on a Netgear WG511 (wireless adapter for laptop). I initially couldn't get it to work with my WEP encrypted network (it worked fine with encryption turned off). But after visiting the Netgear website, I found an updated driver for the WG511, installed it, and am running in secure mode just fine.
I am very pleased with the price/performance of the Netgear solution and suggest you give it serious consideration.
