The Netgear ReadyNAS Duo is actually a small, specialized Linux computer running on a SPARC processor. Its main purpose is to provide data storage for multiple computers attached to a network (wired or wireless).
The ReadyNAS Duo does this very well. It is a small, black box designed with lots of ventilation. The front grill opens without tools to reveal two hard disc drive carriers that slide out when a lever is pulled. Each carrier can hold a single, standard 3.5" SATA drive, which in this case is something you supply yourself. (The box can also be purchased "prepopulated" with one hard drive.)

It takes ten minutes and a small (size 00) Phillips-head screwdriver to attach a hard drive to a carrier and slide it into the ReadyNAS. You must install at least one drive before powering up the unit for the first time, and attach it using an Ethernet cable to your network.
What you then have is what appears to a very large drive being shared on your network.
It is notable that adding a second drive of the same capacity allows the ReadyNAS Duo to "mirror" the contents of the first drive--that is, keep the same information on two drives. If one drive fails, the other drive still has all the information and can continue to be used. A drive can be removed at any time, even while the ReadyNAS Duo is online and active. A replacement drive will be brought into the system; if it is the same size as the drive already inside, it will be formatted and the contents of the online drive will be "mirrored" to it over the span of a few hours. If it is larger, it will appear to be the same size as the old smaller drive. If the smaller drive is then replaced, the two drives together will expand their capacity to that of the larger one. This behavior allows easy expansion of the storage capacity without losing the services of the ReadyNAS Duo at any time during the expansion.
The fun starts when you delve into the "services" (optional functions) available on your ReadyNAS--remembering that it is a small computer in its own right. The Duo is capable of streaming music, photos, and video to other devices on your network, including TiVo and other computers. It is capable of controlling a backup of your important files.
It can serve as a repository for Macintosh "Time Machine" backups from multiple Macs attached to your network. This last feature sounds problematic, because Time Machine is designed to fill up an entire disc volume. However, Netgear has designed the Time Machine "service" to use up to a designated share of the ReadyNAS capacity, and multiple users share that capacity. This means in my case that, with 1.5 TB of space total on the drives, I can designate 700 MB specifically for Time Machine, and have the remainder available for other uses.

The ReadyNAS duo is attached through an Ethernet switch to my Airport Extreme, which makes it available both over the wireless Airport connection and on the Ethernet local network. Access speeds are very good over Airport, and quite fast on the hardwired connection.
Netgear supports the ReadyNAS products through a dedicated Web site staffed by engineers who appear to have come to work for the company after it absorbed Infrant, the company that developed the ReadyNAS. Their site provides lively forums, new software services, patches, and comprehensive product information.
I'm very pleased so far with my purchase, and believe I will find more uses for the ReadyNAS Duo as I continue to integrate it into my network and workstyle.
