Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Excellent, affordable gigabit switch -- may need to tweak your settings
Summary: 5 Stars

Using the pcattcp benchmarking tool, I find I got speeds of ~11,000 KB/sec using my Netgear 10/100 router. Plugged into my new gigabit switch, I am seeing speeds of ~95,000 KB/sec (the maximum would be 122,000 KB/sec).

For those of you not in IT, you need to make sure your network cards are gigabit-capable, and that the cable throughout your house is Cat 5e or better. There are also some registry tweaks you may need to perform, described at [...]

Netgear makes a solid gigabit switch -- before you complain you're not seeing improvements in speed, you really need to diagnose the rest of your system.

Customer Review: Easy to use network upgrade
Summary: 5 Stars

If you transfer large files to/from another computer or NAS this is an appropriate upgrade. I need to transfer upwards of 20GB regularly and was tired of waiting for it to complete using the good-old standard 10/100 ethernet gear.

When configured properly, this cut my transfer times by an order of magnitude as one would expect. I just had to make sure the NAS was setup to handle jumbo frames. If you don't to this, it is likely you will not notice a performance improvement.

The switch was ready right out of the box. No configuration was necessary unless you really want to use the management features.

Customer Review: Great Device
Summary: 5 Stars

Very easy to setup and use. I just purchased a second one. In the upper level of my house, I have a VOIP phone, blu-ray player for netflix, my wife's work laptop and a printer. In the basement, I have another blu-ray player for my entertainment system, my tv, my receiver, a printer, a desktop. It was almost a cinch to setup with nothing to install.

I highly recommend this device due to the price and easy of use. I purched my first device more than a year ago and just purchased my second one. I am sure there are faster ones now, but you have to pay for them.

You can also daisy chain them.

Customer Review: An excellent gigabit switch
Summary: 5 Stars

The housing is all metal and fairly heavy, helping to keep it in place when all the cables are plugged, and probably keeps it cool (Netgear has had problems with overheating products). There are two LED's on each port, indicating 10 or 100 or 1000 (both lit). The adapter is a narrow "sideways" switching power supply which should help to keep your outlets free. Can't say if it will pull down the full ~125 megabytes per second, but my DNS-323 (raid-0, ext2, v1.02 firmware) draws 26MB/s reads using FTP.

An excellent switch for the price. I have actually found that I need a second one.

Customer Review: Home Network Expansion
Summary: 5 Stars

Purchasing this piece of equipment was the best investment I've made in my efforts to expand the capability of my home LAN! I was hesitant at first because I have a Linksys Wireless N Router and did not want to mix-match my LAN equipment. But this network switch works very well with my network; it's sleek, low-profile appearance makes it a great option to connect all my home theater equipment that requires on-line access (i.e., BD-Live, Sat Receiver, DVD/VHS recorder, and my HDTV, etc.) without creating an ugly mess of cables. I like the color too!
