Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual-Band Gigabit Router WNDR3700
Customer Review: Truly a nice little WoNDeR! Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program(What's this?)
This router replaced my solid and dependable (but not quite so inspired) Linksys WRT54GL.
Its hard to know where to begin with the comparisons - if the WRT54GL is a Toyota Camry, then the WNDR feels like a Lotus Elise.
Right from the outside, there is a sleekness to the device, that I haven't associated with routers in a very long while. When you have its nine lights blinking various shades of amber, blue, and green, its almost like geek heaven! There's just as much of a generational difference on the inside.
Here's a quick synopsis of this review encapsulated in one word - "Wow!!!" - hence the 5-star rating.
Now, let's dig into the details.
Installation:
This was by far the easiest intall process I've had with a wireless networking product. The software is truly neophyte-friendly, and is complete with animations of the removal of power plugs and connection of ethernet cables. This is an impressive feat and will very likely meet the needs of most first time networkers.
Unfortunately, the software won't run under Vista 64-bit.
In addition, it got confused when trying to investigate the final setup as I had not powered on my router. Even though I hastily corrected that situation, it simply hung there for an eternity - and committed the cardinal sin of not letting me abort the interrogation.
Fortunately, after I killed and restarted the process, it very kindly allowed me to skip the preliminary steps and proceeded to successfully verify the network details.
Configuration:
The setup software was also smart enough to accept key configuration parameters such as the network SSIDs for the two networks (it is true dual band after all), as well as network security parameters.
The user-friendliness of the setup routine was apparent in how the wireless security options are displayed, in increasing order of security (WEP64 through to WPA2).
One silly design decision, was that it wouldn't accept a passphrase that contained special characters. As a workaround, I specified a simpler password here, and updated it to the final version later.
A nice touch was the automatic registration built into the setup process which even retrieved the device's serial number - which is often painful to transcribe correctly.
Firmware Update:
Another example of Netgear's thoughtfulness is the seamless manner in which the router updated its own firmware. On the very first access to the web based administration utility, it automatically detected that I had outdated firmware, and without any further ado, downloaded and installed the latest version, with no user intervention!
Advanced Features:
This router has every imaginable feature that I could ask for, in a single package.
1) Worried about sharing your network passphrase with guests wishing to use your network? Worry no longer. The WNDR lets you setup two guest networks, with or without encryption.
2) How about installing a NAS device accessible from the various computers in your home? This little WNDR lets you connect and share any USB drive. As a bonus, you can access files over the Internet using a standard browser or FTP client.
3) Upset that you have to leave a computer on in order to stream media to your TV or gaming device? The WNDR is a DLNA compliant media server. Simply copy media files over to the attached USB drive!
4) Want to discover why you *need* a hardware firewall? The WNDR has detailed logging that lets you see what and who is knocking at the gates of your firewall castle. You'll see entries such as port scanning that have the potential to make you hyper-paranoid.
5) Want to keep tabs on your Internet usage stats? The WNDR will do it for you using its nifty traffic meter.
6) Want to restrict when the kids can use the Internet? No problem.
If its something you can name (say, support for dynamic DNS), then there's a good chance that this router will let you do it.
Conclusion:
My only complaints relate to areas that aren't directly connected to the router itself or are not quite so critical - hence my decision to award it a full complement of 5 stars.
First, the manual, while sufficient for normal setup descriptions, is woefully deficient when it comes to the advanced features. Be prepared to spend time online if you need to get the most out of this device.
Second, while you can access your NAS drive over the Internet, you cannot upload files using the HTTP interface. Furthermore, the only choice when securing it, is to use the router's admin password - a silly decision.
Third, adding a read password seems to disable the media server - my PS3 couldn't even detect it any more.
Finally, I had trouble with accessing a password protected NAS drive via Windows Explorer, until I simply recycled the notebook, router, and modem while I was on hold with a rather confused tech support agent. The problem then mysteriously went away.
Despite these minor blemishes, this is a wonderfully designed product, and is worthy of all the attention that it has received.
