Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 7200T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigation with Bluetooth, Text-to-Speech, and Free Traffic Alerts

Customer Review: Great GPS unit - but....
Summary: 5 Stars

Update March 2010: Still working great. Battery is toast. Charge doesn't last more than 45 minutes. Not a good thing if you want to rely on it for walking tours. Prob ought to turn down the screen brightness and how long until the screen sleeps. Works fine on long car trips as long as it is plugged in. Still loving it though.

Freshmaps worked last night to give me whatever is the most recent maps. Am seeing some Freshmaps cards for sale again. Must be the last of the old stock. Still seeing some discussion of these GPS units on the GPS forums b/c they are still popular in Europe. Applications like speed camera warners and extended POI indexes are available on these forums.

Update 6-27-09: Still working very well. Wife took it to Atlanta - err, maybe the GPS took her to Atlanta... Anyhow she is addicted. Said it allows her to concentrate more on driving and avoiding accidents.

Update 06-16-09: Used the Navigon to get me north of Chicago and back to TN and all over part of WI. ~1500 miles. REALLY, really good. It did freeze up once while traveling. Held the power button for 10+ seconds, Waited 5 seconds and then turned it back on. Once it got back to the main menu I simply repicked my destination from the recent destinations list. Back in business in under 2 mins. This problem is very similar to a problem I used to have with an early Windows laptop. If it got sluggish and I tried to do too much too fast it would freeze. In that case it was a situation where the hardware was temporarily overtaxed.

Screen is still occasionally slow to respond. Seems to be responding but the device is too busy to react as requested. I have slowed my taps and it gets the job done more reliably. Not always an issue though.

Anyhow the lane assist and traffic features were top notch. Traffic reports helped me use KY and IL backroads to miss heavy traffic and a traffic accident. It allowed me to travel through rush hour traffic homeward bound in about the same amount of time as my trip up where I spent no time in heavy traffic aside from one traffic accident in Indiana. My Garmin experienced passengers were impressed too. Our other vehicle had a new Garmin to guide them and several of the passengers who spent time in both vehicles stated they preferred my Navigon better after witnessing both - especially after using voice recognition while travelling down the road in heavy traffic to make our way to some real Chicago style pizza (like no other pizza I've tasted - really GOOD).

Update 06-08-09: Traffic worked in Nashville this morn. Was getting data from an FM station in the middle of the dial. Warned me of a problem a few miles west of the exit where I left the interstate. Unit got hot b/c I clamped it to the windshield in the direct sunlight. 90 degree weather. I was hot too. Must-fix-air-conditioner! No damage and I relocated it near the top of the windshield in the shade. A good reminder to take it out of the car when I leave. A dash vent mount might be better for cooling in the summer (cooling it, not me). Unit did very well with voice recognition on my way to my errand but not back. VBG! Apparently I don't pronounce "10th" very well. Easy to fix with a taps on the touchscreen. Navigon unit understood me with the engine idling and the windows open.

Navigon unit continues to be a tad sluggish when I first turn it on and when I first return to the main menu screen. We're talking 2 seconds slower than instant. My theory is that Windows CE (which the GPS runs on as an application) is busy for those two seconds. My older laptop that runs Windows and Linux (dual boot) does the exact same thing when it is pretty busy. No big deal for me.

It does show the local university now on the map after the maps update but the university is not showing up in the POI lists.

Unit appears to find more POIs NEAR me than when I search directly? I have to investigate. I see the Napa auto parts store listed near me but can't find it searching in the lists directly? Not sure yet. Could be a user mistake.

Update 06-03-09: Looked closer at the POI index for this area and several larger metro areas. Lowe's Hardware IS in the index - just not the one here. In Atlanta they are listed. Home Depot, True Value, Ace Hardware and others popped up in the list depending on what area you were looking at. Still no significant university listed in our town. Still impressed with this gadget.

Update 6-02-09: Got my Freshmaps activation card and did the maps update last night. It went without a hitch and took about 5 hrs over slow DSL. I hear it can go alot faster if your connection is faster. In other words my connection is the bottleneck.

Anyhow maps look the same but the POI list is MUCH better. Still doesn't list Lowes Hardware in this town nor the local University of 10,500 students. It does list the local community college. ???. Checked a suburb outside of Chattanooga and it does list a Home Depot, Ace Hardware here and there, BestBuy. Kmart, Walmarts, etc. No Target store. It does now include many ofthe local auto parts stores.

More satisfied. Do franchise businesses have to buy into the POI index? When I travel I'll grab the phone book from the hotel room for the ultimate POI list. Get the address from the book and plug it into the Navigon. Voice recognition wahoo!

Wonder why Navigon doesn't keep the freshmaps activation cards available until demand dries up? Why let the card supply dry up while their GPS units are still selling? The GPS unit is still plenty useful withut any map updates. Grab the free software update and go travelling. Not the best way to exit the USA market. The goodwill created by continuing updates availability might help them when/if they ever decide to return the US market.

Update 5-30-09: Freshmaps activation card supplies are apparently drying up. I found one through BestBuy. Amazon had none. FWIW alot of my friends and family never update their GPS units - just use them as they come from the store until they replace them years later.

Update 05-25-09: Used it for a 100 mile trip to and through a big TN city. Picked a different route than I expected. The distances were nearly the same as the one I had travelled in the past. Having the GPS unit show me which lane to get into and what the exit would look more or less like was A+. Unit never got warm. Never got stuck. Never crashed. Flawless. BUNCHES of POIs everytime I looked. Still no hardware or auto parts stores.

Used it again this morn and again it took a slightly different route (35 mile trip) than I would have but it reliably got me to my destination and home again. Did do some time on a country gravel road that had been rerouted from what the Navtec maps showed. My neighbor said it had been rerouted several years ago. Road is a mile long and three families live on it. Doubt it is a high priority road for the survey crews. VBG! Still the directions worked correctly and the voice prompts were correct.

I am a very happy Navigon customer. I have a couple of friends seriously considering it.

A previous review by me was marked as a kid review. I'm not...

Used it to cross town on a familiar errand for milk. GPS aimed me down a side street which MIGHT be only slightly shorter but because it involves two stop signs, there is no time savings. This was with the route on "optimal". The GPS unit's choice would have added 1 min to my trip. Big deal. Also tried to route me through a one track narrow side street that I avoid because the end of the street is a dangerous intersection. Oh well. In both cases I drove past those suggested intersections and it almost instantly recalculated to the route I prefer. If I was lost the original routes it suggested would have been fine.

The "real life" interstate exit signs are top notch. At the right time it switched from the 3D to sign view and told me where to turn off the interstate. A+ feature. POIs may be better with other units but so far it finds everything I throw at it from my armchair. Does not seem to have hardware stores or auto parts stores though. Would be nice for long trips or business trips where I need tools or parts.

VERY enthusiastic about this GPS. I originally thought that it came with three years Freshmaps but I guess I was wrong. I shopped long and hard and perhaps I got my GPS unit ads mixed up. Finding Freshmaps cheaper than the NavigonUSA MSRP. Will likely update to get the expanded POI index I am reading about here and there.

By the way my unit got a free software update but the maps and POIs are from 3rd quarter 2008. A friend assures me that some GPS units are considered up to date but still have older info than that. Dunno. Would be nice to buy the unit and get the 1st map and POI update free so that the software was as new as the hardware.

I have seen a few occasions where the unit did not seem to accept screen inputs but then I realized that it was still up and quite busy. The delays amounted to 3-5 seconds. Big deal.

I'll add additional reviews as I learn more about this unit.
