Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Navigon 5100 super buy Summary: 5 Stars
Though I might have wished I purchased the 7100 for the extra features, my heart says that I got the most bang for the buck.
This is a quite extraordinary device as compared to the many other GPS innovations I have worked with over the years. I have an RV and a GPS in my laptop, but it is too cumbersome to drive the big rig and navigate. The Navigon 5100 removes all the mumbo jumbo and takes me exactly to the destination I entered. I love it and am very happy I purchased it.
As a deficency, and in reading other reviews on Navigon I also find that the route is not always the best, shortest, or fastest. It seems to want to take you in a round about way on occassion when simply, if you stay on the highway or road you are on you would get there more quickly. Yet, it doesn't complain, yell or bitch when you just keep driving. It may say make a U Turn etc. but quickly calculates another way, alwayss trying to get you back to the orignal recommended roads. Just keep driving the route you know and voila it finally figures it out.
All the features are first class. The roads smoothly track and everything you need to know is on the screen. I like the McDonalds and Burger King symbols etc. as one might fancy a different restaurant, or a different Gas station because of price.
I like the window mount, and rather than mount it in the center, the mount is in the lower left side of my windshield facing in, and does not block my vision-left or right. As I said, this is the best GPS I have been worked with for several years.
For those who don't like menu's, remember this is a computer not a person sitting in the other seat who knows everything. And, for the men, YOU STILL DON'T HAVE TO STOP AND ASK DIRECTIONS. HE. HE.
Customer Review: Better than Garmin, Tom Tom or Magellan Summary: 5 Stars
I drive a lot on Southern California Freeways and I really need a good TPS unit and traffic service. I've used GPS devices from Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan and the bottom line is that the Navigon 5100 works better. I got tired of paying $144 per year for traffic reports and heard about the Navigon 5100 providing FREE traffic reports for life, so I bought one.
My big complaint is that I should have bought a Navigon sooner, because not only is the traffic report free (saving $144 per year) but the unit is far easier to use and more accurate.
The Navigon is much easier to use and gives far more accurate directions to your destination. It lets you read turn by turn directions and even takes the current traffic conditions into account in figuring which route to get you to your destination fastest.
Some reviewers said that the volume is not loud enough. Either this was an old problem (which has been fixed) or these people need new hearing aids. My Navigon 5100 is plenty loud to hear the directions just fine while driving at Freeway speeds, even with the radio on.
The Navigon even lets you choose to take a different route, like when you see a traffic problem before it is on the traffic report service and it will automatically figure out that you are going a different way and redirect you.
It isn't perfect, but it sure is better than the competitors. My only complaint is that the Navigon gives you 3 choices for toll roads (allow, avoid and forbid). While this works far better than Garmin, Tom Tom or Magellan, I would prefer to have choices like allow toll road only if it saves more than 5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.
Customer Review: Great GPS Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first GPS, and the main reason why I got it was the included Traffic. Just about any other GPS around this price required you to by an additional Traffic receiver. The traffic updates work fantasticaly, as well as the POI's.
The size is perfect that I can slip it into my pocket when I leave the car. I fortunatly have a compartment on my dashboard that this fits into very nicely. The Navigon 5100 also comes with one of the most stable windshield attachments I have ever seen. I would think that it would not work that well in smaller cars. The 5100 rotates onto it, so it has a very strong attachment, and the entire arm held tight on the window thru some very bumpy traffice. But, I did not want to advertise to anybody that I had a GPS, so I took it off soon after.
It did not come with a home charger, just the USB wire to connect to the computer. I have enough UBS chargers at home, and found the charger for my phone works well for the 5100.
If you get this, go to the Navigon website, and download their tool. It is very usefull for updating, as well as backing things up.
The one thing I am disappointed in is that Navigon is technically getting out of the US market, and only working on apps for the IPhone. They are huge in Europe, and the maps there are getting updated all of the time. There are US updates on their European website that you can purchase. Still do not have the need to update the maps as of yet.
Overall, I love my new toy!
Customer Review: Happy with Navigon 5100 Summary: 5 Stars
I have purchased this unit on Sunday after black Friday from Radishack for
$229 + tax ($18). I am so far very happy with the purchase. I have used it evryday for more than two weeks now, drove to 3-4 new places in Chicago
suburbs. So far it always worked great. I love the text-to-speech feature.
As it is so clear and nice I rarely look onto the screen.
Satellite lock is also very quick. Quite often I took a different path
in known territory and it recalculates new path pretty quick and well. You can customize it in many different ways, like disallow u-turn etc.
Also you can display altitude, expected time of arrival, speed.
It tells you on which side of the road is your destination. Surprisingly
though it idicated my home on the wrong side of a small neighbourhood street. It indicated all other destinations correctly.
I find the layout very intuitive, and was able to do almost everything,
I need to do, without consulting the document.
This is my first GPS, so I cannot compare.
In absolute term this is great. I know I cannot find anything at this
price that has tex-to-speech, traffic info, lane assistance.
I think the only negative feature is not so great POI. It knows about
a lot of small places where I would never go, but it does not know
about a lot of big chain places where I often go. It would have been nice
to have a better POI, but everything has a price tag, and this is not
my priority.
Customer Review: Love this thing! Summary: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research before purchasing this GPS unit - all of my friends said to go with a better known brand, but I can't see them doing the job this does any better.
It tells you exactly what you have to do - the voice is loud enough over music you may be playing, the directions are clear and the Zagat is a nice addition as well although I have yet to use that feature. What I did like was the traffic feature - FREE, by the way - that can help you avoid traffic situations in the cities listed. My area isn't covered my the traffic, but when I go down to NYC it is - and let me tell you it's a nice feature to have!
The only thing I would change about this unit - and it's so minor it's not even worth mentioning - is that when it recalculates, I'd like to hear that that's what it's doing. A simple "Recalculating" from the unit would be helpful. It does show you that on the screen, but I'd like to hear it as I'm not always watching the screen. Nor should I be!
I like the 2D and 3D views - and the day and night features too.
As with all of the other GPS units the points of interest are a bit "off"- some are missing or have moved from that location - but that seems to be a common issue with all GPS units.
For my money, this is the best out there. I'm glad I wasn't talked into getting "what everyone else has", because this unit does all that and more!
