Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of National Geographic Adventure Paper

Customer Review: Works as advertised
Summary: 4 Stars

4 1/2 stars really. I use this paper to create custom maps for hiking/camping. It works as advertised, it's waterproof and sweat proof, it's doesn't even really get soggy, just wipe the water off of it. It folds really well and cuts well too. My local REI store has a map printed on this paper sealed in a water bottle with a date from over a year ago on it, there is no fading and no running of ink.

Here's where it loses a half star. My only complaint is that there is no information on what printer settings to use when printing with this paper. They should have a listing of various printer manufacturers and the correct paper type to select when printing. My Epson 1400 has 9 different paper types to choose from! I have had good luck using the "Premium Presentation Paper Matte" setting but that was a lucky guess on my part.

Customer Review: Really is waterproof and ink does not run
Summary: 4 Stars

This paper is quite expensive, but very high quality. Waterproof, and the ink doesn't run. I printed off some topos and they look great.

Customer Review: Pretty & Tough but with ink problems
Summary: 3 Stars

This "paper" is actually a synthetic paper substitute, which gives it remarkable properties. Though it didn't quite live up to its promise, I was still quite impressed by this paper.

I got this paper in order to print a gift for a friend that would live up to moderate weather. In that respect, it was a moderate success. I tried a few different settings and eventually found that the best method is to print a single sheet at a time and immediately move it to a place to allow the ink to dry. After an hour, ink no longer smeared upon casual touch. After several hours, the ink was completely dry. However, when tested with a water mister, it smeared again. Obviously, the (HP 88) ink could also be at fault for this.

I'm no paper expert, but it feels of a suitably heavy weight and nice texture: neither too smooth nor too rough. The most outstanding aspect of the paper is it's resiliency. This stuff is tough! Even moderate force does not result in tearing. After significant effort, the paper starts to stretch, almost like a plastic. Unless you get this stuff stuck in an engine or in a bear, you won't accidentally tear it.

Customer Review: Gambling on whether or not it will work with your printer
Summary: 1 Stars

This did not work with my printer using HP 56 & 57 ink cartridges (ink on dark areas ran). Other manufacturers of similar paper give a warning that it doesn't work with all printers, but this one provides no such warning. I know there are a lot of inks out there, but I find it pretty ridiculous that this manufacturer does absolutely nothing to help you determine what inks will work well with this paper. At the very least I'd expect a "known to work with..." database.

Since this is marketed as "Adventurer" paper for printing maps, it's quite easy to see that people could end up in a very bad situation if the ink runs while they're out in the field. Since it's too difficult for an end user to test every possible situation, I can't see this paper being useful for its advertised purpose.

I also noticed the ink would bleed through to the back, so you could not print on both sides of the paper without disrupting what's on the other side. And when wet and allowed to try all of the color would bleed if placed up against another sheet of this paper, so any folded map would run. Which ruined my idea of just printing light colored maps to get around the issue of just the dark colors running.

Customer Review: Canon ink (#8 cartridge) runs, even after hours
Summary: 1 Stars

The black ink from my Canon printer (#5 and #8 PGBK cartridges) runs like crazy under a faucet, after printing on this paper, even after several hours of "drying".

Sorry, but that makes it useless for my purpose -- taking nautical charts on a kayak deck -- and, I imagine for anyone who needs true waterproof printing.

I cannot speak for other inks.
