Customer Review: Can't beat the price - and it's a quality model
Summary: 5 Stars

For those looking to sign up for Cable high speed internet, this is for you. Won't work for DSL. In my area (California) the going rate for a modem lease from the cable company is $3/month. If you're on a one year contract, it'll make sense to lease it from them, since it's easier to have them replace it than you. For a two year contact, things flip around, especially if you got this with free shipping. Mind you, its not a big difference...

Pros: Inexpensive (compared to buying it at stores like Target and Best Buy). Reliable. Both Network (wired) and USB ports, although I have never used the USB side of the modem.

Cons: Nothing specific. Maybe it could look a little more sleek/modern.

Overall: If you're getting Cable internet with a two year contract, get it. With a one year contract, get it only if you like having your own hardware.

I bought the Motorola Surfboard 5101 cable modem because it has a standby button, it takes up very little space on my desk, and the lights on the front let you know whether or not it is working properly.

I have a lot of programs that load everytime I boot up my computer. So it takes longer to boot it up than I have time for. If I know I will be getting back on line later in the day, I can leave my computer running and push the standby button. This stops internet activity until I push it again. This is a great convenience to me, and protects my computer as well. Since my cable internet provider no longer provides its customers with modems that have standby buttons, I bought my own. I havn't been sorry yet.

I gave this product 5 stars because it does everything I wanted it to do, and I have had no problems with it.

Customer Review: Fast cable modem, great price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was using SB4100 model until today. My max download speed was around 3mbps. Recently, my ISP sent me notice that they upgraded to up to 12 mbps download speed. However, my connection was still at 3mbps. So, I called them and they suggested to replace my modem with either of SB5100 series. Initially I wasn't willing since SB4100 model claims connectivity up to 38 mbps per specs. But, I decided to replace my 7+ years old modem anyway. It took few minutes for technician to reset my new modem remotely and I ended up booting my system twice. The results? 15down/5up mbps. I was shocked. I checked speed on couple of different websites that provide speed meter and I got always around 15 mbps. I wish I bought it long time ago. I always thought that my ISP service was just slow in my area. BTW, the same product goes for $ 79.99 in Best Buy before tax.

Customer Review: Easy Install, Increased Speed

The Comcast supplied modem I was using was dropping off line randomly, and always at the worst times. After doing some research (while on hold to Comcast's Help Desk) I decided to buy my own modem. I have no idea why I have not done this already. It pays for itself in 8 months and I had my last modem for three years....

Great modem, simple set up. The hardest thing was trying to explain to the Comcast tech that I was on an IP phone, and when he registered the new modem I would be disconnected, so he better get all the info he needs now. Of course he did not get all the info he needed from me before disconnecting the old modem, so we were cut off and I had to call them back on my cell...I digress, the SB5101 is a fine modem. it's been running for two weeks now without an issue. Buy it! It will save you money!

Customer Review: Bothersome PC Activity Light
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this modem for about 4 months. It was very easy to set up. It includes a port for a regular RJ-45 ethernet cable and one for USB. I'm able to receive (based on my cable plan) around 20Mbps downstream without any limitations from the modem. The only thing that bothers me about this modem is the blinking PC Activity light. This light should blink when your computer is transmitting data (when the modem is receiving data from the ethernet/usb port). However, it's always blinking. At first I thought my computer was infected with something and it was transmitting data without my knowledge. I ran a network packet capture and determined that was not the case. Upon searching online, I found out other people were complaining about this.
Maybe they should rename it from PC Activity Light to Random Blinking Light.
