Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable ModemCustomer Review: As promised Summary: 5 Stars
For my setup, I have my cable service from Cox, my cable modem, and an Linksys wireless router. The day my modem arrived, I took it out of the box and plugged it in. I called Cox, navigated through their automated phone menu system, and read off the MAC ID to the tech services person. He did some stuff on his end to first recognize the new cable modem. Then he had to do some other configuration on his end because of the router. Once that was done, viola! We've been using the cable modem for the past week or so without problem.
Be aware that a number of ISPs can block certain ports - this does not matter what modem you have as all are mainly DOIS compliant. This may not be a problem for you. But for some people, it can be. Before you buy and sign up for service, look around the web and make sure it's what you want. Cable people will deny they do this, but they do. And it can really mess up your experience if you are a "power user" and give you lots of trouble.
Customer Review: Easy to set up and works great Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this cable modem to replace my 7 year old Toshiba modem. I was having to power cycle the Toshiba modem every other day. I think it was on its last leg. Since installing the Surfboard modem it just stays up and I no longer have to reset the modem. I am not observing any noticeable improvement in speed but this is just casual observation and not based on any scientific speed test.
I ran into a slight issue during set up but the problem corrected itself. The set up was easy but the modem didn't come up right away (i.e., didn't get four green lights on the front panel). The cable company customer service rep who registered the modem for me could not figure out why it didn't turn up. They opened a ticket to dispatch a technician next morning. But when I checked the modem a few hours later it was fully on and had four green lights. It's been working great ever since. I would highly recommend this modem.
Customer Review: Motorola SB1501 Cable Modem with Win7 Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered the SB 5101 from Digital Media at the lower price of the two identical items offered. Shipment took only 5 days with normal shipping. The modem is being used as a replacement to the Comcast rental modem and has about 1year to start paying for itself. I verified with Motorola that the modem would operate properly using Win 7 and an older Microsoft router. Installation was a snap and the instructions advised calling the cable provider (This is at odds with other reviews which state there is no warning to notify the provider) to update the system. In my area Comcast has a automated function to update the modem. I rebooted the router after installing the modem but before I updated it with Comcast. That doesn't work I was able to connect to the internet but stuck in Comcast's setup routine. A call to tech support advised to reboot the router which fixed the problem. Both Comcast and Motorola have good tech support.
Customer Review: Triple download speeds Summary: 5 Stars
I ran a few speed tests and found that I was getting average download speeds of 6.2 mbps at the modem (a Toshiba PCX2200 - about 4 years old). i wasn't too happy as I was paying for "at least" 12 mbps service. After working with Comcast tech support for awhile they suggested that I try a new modem.... to be honest, I was a little suspicious as they wanted me to rent one of theirs. Instead I bought one of these from Amazon. Hooked it up this morning and spent about 20 minutes with Comcast support getting the address set up properly. Nothing was different but the new modem.... ran a new speed test: download was 20.4 mbps or about 3.3x what it had been. Upload speeds went from about 1 mbps to over 9 mbps, so 9x improvement. And at Amazon's price, the modem pays for itself in 6 months compared to renting. Now if I could just get the "n" wireless to cooperate and stuff all that speed over the airwaves.....
Customer Review: Simple, dependable performance Summary: 5 Stars
I had had my old modem for several years and didn't realize it was giving me problems. I started having connectivity problems which looked like the cable was out. Got Comcast out, they verified a cable problem, fixed it, and everything worked again. Then a week or two later, started having the same problems, but more consistently and began to suspect the modem. Got this new one, it installed instantly, and all problems solved. Note that I had to get Comcast to register it, and when I did, they asked if I was using a router on the other side. When I said yes, they said they wouldn't support it, but agreed to register anyhow when I agreed I understood but wanted it connected anyhow. As for the modem, it's basically set it and forget it. I don't like to give 5 stars unless something is fantastic. But in this case, I can't think of anything that would cause me to take away a star.
