Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable ModemCustomer Review: Motorola = Reliable Summary: 5 Stars
This was brought to replace SBG1000 as COX Communications seemed to drop DOSCIS 1.0 support overnight with no notice. We opted not to get a Cable Modem/Gateway combo this time. Cox presented us an option to get a modem from them and the choices were between Scientific Atlanta or Motorola. We chose Motorola, but when we tried to pick it up they claimed they were all out. Taking the Scientific America setup was SLOW and frequent loss of connection happened over the course of a week. Note this was a modem issue as Cable and Cox Phone service were not impacted.
We came to Amazon to find a replacement and got a GREAT Deal on the Motorola. Delivery was fast and the best part was setup was a breeze. Pretty much plug and play after a quick call to register the MAC address with COX. No long resolution time, and thus far not a single loss of signal. Just like my last Motorola, the browser interface is easy to use and allows for monitoring of critical data. The product takes a minimum of space in my wiring closet. Over all I would rate this product a must buy for anyone needing to upgrade (When your cable service provider upgrades to a DOCSIS 2.0 network system) or purchase a new modem.

Customer Review: Finally technology that delivers and installs easily without problems Summary: 5 Stars
We replaced a Netgear router/combo that habitually dropped us and which recently failed. Although we rented from Comcast we decided that renting another cheap piece of junk wasn't worth it. This unit (Motorola Surfboard) was very quick and easy to install, we just plugged in the ethernet cable to the router, connected the coaxial cable and plugged the unit into the wall (I believe that you may need to install software/drivers if you want to use a USB connection). When you change (or add a unit) you must also call your cable company. This was the most arduous part of the process, unless plugging cables together is somehow difficult :). Speed seems similar, but signal strength is definitely better relative to our Netgear (see our others reviews to learn more about our experience with that hardware).
Pro:
+ Easy set up (excluding cable company experience which will vary I bet)
+ Strong signal
+ Small footprint
+ Mac friendly (2 Apple desktops, 1 iBook laptop, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and an Airport Extreme)
Con:
- None yet
Neutral:
> Separated from the router, good be good or bad... e.g. if one fails can be replaced easier (+) but two separate units means more cables and power plugs (-)
Bottom line: Highly recommended. So far so good.
Customer Review: Quick and easy speed boost! Summary: 5 Stars
I just replaced my Linksys WCG200 cable gateway modem. The Linksys was installed for the past 4 years on a Comcast network. Bandwidth speed test always came back as 7Mb/s download and 1Mb/s upload. It started slowing down lately and had trouble with web pages hanging up. I called Comcast and they told me the signal was good to my house. I thought I would try and swap the modem and see if there was any improvement. Right before I swapped the modem, I ran a speed test [...]. Results came back 5.9Mb/s download and 1.1Mb/s upload. I unhooked the Linksys and plugged in the Motorola. I called Comcast and gave them the MAC address of the new modem and they activated it. It was quick and easy. Except for the 18 minutes on hold waiting for a Comcast support rep. The first thing I did is run the same speed test I did before I unhooked the Linksys. I was shocked to see the results. It came back as 26Mb/s download and 3.2Mb/s upload. I was hoping for an improvement but was really shocked to see that much improvement! Now I feel cheated because my old modem was holding me back for all those years.
I added an Apple Extreme Wi-Fi base station to this modem. It worked like a charm and now all 5 computers in the house have the same high speed results.
I would definitely recommend this modem.
Customer Review: A stable modem Summary: 5 Stars
Was using a DOCSIS 1.0 modem supplied by my isp back in 06'... seen all the reviews that said when going from 1.0 to 2.0 you would see a huge boost in speed with some saying you get more speed than what you pay for.. in my case that wasn't true at all.. my speed's did not change at all with a 10/1 connection.. still getting steady speed tho, usually getting 80 - 100% testing on speedtest.net
I will say that I was getting frequent disconnects from the net.. it wasn't a regular timeout where say in vent I would disco/reco.. I would lose connection completely.. then the only way I could regain the connection would be to disable / enable my LAN then refresh in a web browser a handful of times to get back online.. since using the surfboard that has all but stopped.. whereas I was getting disconnected half a dozen times a day.. now it rarely happens.. maybe once every few days..
also since I wasn't able to edit my seller's feedback.. I bought my surfboard from 'hotmovieprices' in 'new' condition, I received a box full of used stuff.. the merchant did go out of his way to make it right and sent me a new modem free of charge, and wouldn't let me send back the used modem (which did work) so good on him..
Customer Review: Speedy cable modem, easy installation Summary: 5 Stars
We just ordered th SB-5120 from Fry's, and they sent this model instead. The SB-5101 has almost identical specifications, just the case is a little different, and I guess the 5120 includes TurboDOCS software. We previously had an old Toshiba, which has given stellar service for 5 years, but we decided it was time to replace it before it failed. The Motorola Surfboard was very easy to install, just plug in the ethernet cable to the router (or to your PC), connect the coaxial cable and plug in the power. There is no need to install software or drivers unless you want to use a USB connection. We also had to call Cox Highspeed Internet to give their tech support the new serial number and MAC address of the new cable modem (the Cox website neglects to tell you this step). That was the hardest part of the whole process - it took about 20 minutes, taking into account resetting and rebooting the system at their request. I am not sure that this modem is any faster than the old one, but we have a low signal on our line to start with.
Overall it was very easy to set up and has been fast and reliable. It plays nicely with our router, and has caused no problems in constant daily use on a home network with 4 computers.
