Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable ModemCustomer Review: Surprisingly better connection quality Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this modem and was very impressed with it. I did not think it would make much difference, to be honest. I figured that perhaps it did a little better traffic shaping, but otherwise wasn't going to boost much. So, I put off upgrading my cable modem as long as possible. Then: started having drop outs on my old modem, and I realized my old modem had a mere 10-BaseT Ethernet port. The latter was particularly shocking, since I have 10Mbit downstream internet service (+extra temporary spikes in bandwidth). I can't believe my old modem handled the bandwidth as well as it did.
Well, this new modem is excellent. All speed tests have shown marked improvements, as one would expect. Web page load time does appear quicker, and I suspect it handles multiple simultaneous connections with less latency. It also has a gigabit ethernet port, though I doubt anyone will need more than 100Mbit anytime soon (that's probably what they thought when they built a 10-BaseT ethernet port into my last modem, a Scientific Atlanta DPX-110).
Bottom line: This modem is great, and ready for the future with DOCSIS 3.0. Coming from a REALLY old Scientific Atlanta DPX-110 DOCSIS 1.0 modem, this thing made a huge difference. I wish I would have bought it sooner and saved me the headaches of drop outs during critical uploads.
Overall.. impressed, and I was a skeptic.
Customer Review: Excellent modem, blazing fast speeds with DOCSIS 3.0 in Comcast Summary: 5 Stars
Been a Comcast customer since mid 2002 (when it was AT&T Broadband at first). So far in my 7 years with them, I've probably used 4 different modems. My last one was a Motorola SurfBoard SB5120, and I had the Comcast HSI 12/2 Performance. It had acceptable download speeds, under Comcast DOCSIS 2.0's network.
Some months ago, they started rolling out DOCSIS 3.0, which is a faster broadband protocol, which basically allows your cablemodem to grab several data channels to send and receive data, and with those aggregated channels, you get a massive speed increase (with the proper data/speed package though).
After calling and provisioning my modem, I upgraded to the Ultra 22/5 package which more than suits my needs. I can get around 32Mb/s downlink and around 8Mb/s upstream, with powerboost. Significant increase, I more than doubled my speeds with the new modem and speed tier (up from 16/8).
I am also pleased to see that this SB6120 works very well with Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, no problems at all whatsoever. The network link between my SB6120 and my AEBS is now 1Gbps, which is nice to have.
Motorola is certainly a top notch cablemodem manufacturer, and they didn't disappoint me one bit with this one. Well worth it to get one, you're future proofing yourself for the next 3 years at least. Good investment overall!
Customer Review: Blazing fast even without DOCSIS 3.0 Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this modem to replace an older D-Link modem that decided to stop working. I opted for this newer DOCSIS 3.0 modem so that I would have a "future proof" cable modem. Basically, when my provider finally upgraded their system, I'd be ready to take full advantage.
I've always used Motorola cable modems in the past but never before appreciated how rock solid and fast they are until I bought a cheap D-Link one. Replacing that thing was like night a day! The D-Link would typically lock up on me at least once a month, and as often as once a day. It would always lock up if I was doing a lot of downloading or uploading too, to the point where I had to scale back the speeds with my router to keep it the modem online. Not with the SB6120! I've disabled the throttling and had sustained use of 100% and the modem just happily chugs away. And it's all so snappy! Webpages load faster, I haven't once dropped DNS (which the D-Link did all the time), it has yet to lock up and everything I do online just feels fast, even with downloads running in the background. Finally, my online experience is what it should be!
If you're in the market for a new modem, this is a GREAT choice. If you want to save some cash and not worry about the DOCSIS 3.0 spec, I'd suggest you stick with Motorola (the SB5101 is nice), and at the very least, don't buy a D-Link.
Customer Review: Considerable speed benefits, even on DOCSIS 2.0 services Summary: 5 Stars
This cable modem is very impressive. Installation was simple, getting it connected through Comcast, (over the phone), was simple. I ran a few speed tests before I installed this cable modem, then ran tests after this new DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem was installed. While I expected a speed increase, (based on reviews I read prior to purchasing), I didn't expect my download and upload speeds to essentially triple on my current DOCSIS 2.0 services; with the possibility of an additional increase coming later, according to my ISP.
There's no need to wait until DOCSIS 3.0 services are available,(and/or reasonably affordable), in your area. If you need a modem replacement, or just want better performance, not only will this modem be ready for DOCSIS 3.0 services, but in the mean time, you'll receive a considerable speed boost on your current DOCSIS 2.0 services. I'm very impressed with this modem, and it's certainly worth the additional funds over cheaper, (soon to be obsolete), DOCSIS 2.0 modems. Whether if you're paying a model rental fee to your ISP or not, (especially if you are paying), if you're tired of the old, slow, (DOCSIS 1.1), and/or problematic cable modem you're currently using, this new modem will be a great replacement.
Motorola Surfboard modems have served me well for years, and this new modem, will certainly do so as well.
Customer Review: Best thing I've ever bought Summary: 5 Stars
I was renting the Charter cable modem/router when I begin my 8mbps service with Charter and was happy with it (previous Verizon DSL user)but I heard that DOCSIS 3.0 could boost my speed even more past the 8 mpbs I was paying for. Did some research for two months on different modems, routers and Charter's equipment compatibility list. Decided to go with the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard!!!. Best modem on the market and very cheap. Been running it for about a month now and all I could think was " what took me so long". Easy install, unplug the one you use now and plug this one in, call your cable provider and give them the info they need. Speed tested it with Speakeasy, I was clocking speeds between 55mbps and 60mbps hard wired (remember I pay for 8mbps). Things to think about before you purchase:
Check cable provider's compatibility list
Does cable provider support DOCSIS 3.0
Do you plan to go wireless. If you do, get a 802.11n router and make sure your wireless card can support 802.11n or you'll be downgraded to 802.11g
I paired the modem with a Netgear WNR3500L Router and a NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB Adapter WNDA3100 because my wireless card is 802.11g. My network speeds are now betweem 240mbps and 300mbps and my download speeds are consitently between 38 and 42 mbps.... all the while paying for 8mbps
