Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem

Customer Review: Completes your home network
Summary: 5 Stars

As with other reviews here, this is a fast (possibly fastest) modem which exceeds any subscription speeds at this time and ensures it is not the weak link in optimizing a home network, especially for enthusiasts. I noticed that my pages were opening a little quicker (I could just about tell - it's like seeing a difference between 720p and 1080p or pepsi and coke - operator dependent). On speed testing on a 12Mbps subscription, I am getting 20.9 down and 4.6 up.

It looks great and has different colored lights, which, while minor, helps the device stand out among a generation of truly ugly modems. Combined with other reviews, this makes Motorola a gold standard and definitely a favorite with cable companies for ease of access. There really is almost no point hunting down other makes.

On a personal note, my absolute favorite feature were the five little boxes on the back (outside) of the box - the setup guide! Plug the coax in, plug the a/c, plug in ethernet, call cable company with sticker details, and that's all. Devices are becoming more complex but setup here was ridiculously easy and did not need manuals, reading, CD, or anything else.

FYI I run this with a new apple extreme wireless base station and subscribe to Comcast. Setup on both was so easy. I purchased this from Bestbuy at $99 with local pickup. Unusual the lowest price is the local store!

Good luck.

Customer Review: Help!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not ready to rate this as I don't know if I should buy it. The owner of our building (connected with a university) decided everyone in the building was going to sign up for cable and internet with Charter. So I did not have any choice, unless I want to double pay, but to get hooked up with Charter for internet. I recently bought the Mac Extreme router which I had hoped to connect with the LAN line that was installed in the kitchen. Charter will not tell me what connections I have or what kind. I have not yet gotten a LAN connection so maybe there is no modem downstairs and the line is dead. The landlord keeps sending my calls to Charter and Charter keeps sending me back to my landlord. So I am wondering if I just guessed, bought this modem and crossed my fingers I will luck out and have a broadband connection and it will produce a blazing fast connection for my router. I am a photographer and I stream videos a lot so speed is essential. I see many people here are on comcast so I do not even know if this modem is compatible with the Charter service. I have been paying double now since Christmas because I just can't get the information I need to hook up. And NO equipment whatsoever has been provided. I have been reluctant to give up my ATT service which has been working nicely for me until I have successfully connected to the compulsory Charter service. Suggestions are welcome!

Customer Review: Reliability and Performance - Looks Nice Too
Summary: 5 Stars

I gave away my old but reliable Motorola Surfboard SB1501 Docsis 2.0 to a friend when I moved out of the Cox Communications service area. I had a choice between AT&T Uverse and Time Warner Cable in my new place. I was initially going to sign up with AT&T Uverse until I found out that I would have to use their hybrid 2-in-1 modem/router combo device. I wanted to use my wireless N router, but that needed a workaround that required a considerable amount of effort.

I decided to go with Time Warner Cable and bought this router. Time Warner issues their customers with a Docsis 2.0 modem for free but I told them that I wanted to use the Motorola SB6120 since it was a Docsis 3.0. After the technician called their office to register the modem, it was up and running. I am extremely happy with the performance of this modem. I pay for the standard 10mbps internet with Time Warner, but my speed is consistently between 13-25mbps (using speedtest.net) with this modem combined with my wireless N router (Netgear WNR3500L w/ DD-WRT). Other people in my area complain about Time Warner's internet speed and reliability, but I have not had any problems. I am not sure if it has anything to do with this modem, but the only thing different from our set up is this modem. I'm not 100% positive, but I think this modem is the difference.

Oh and it looks really nice too.

Customer Review: A pleased Cox Cable Customer
Summary: 5 Stars

I was litte worried reading some of the reviews about firmware and Cox being a problem, but I elected to take a shot. I only have the preferred package from Cox which normally provides 10mbs. My original DOCSIS 1.1 modem was starting to die on me forcing me to restart my modem roughly once or twice a day. After finding out that it was out of warranty, I elected to not spend 80 bucks for a cox-cable provided modem but instead after doing some homework future-proof my investment and buy this Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 SB6120 backward compatible modem. I received it through Amazon Prime and Ontrac, after three days since ordering it. I literally disconnected my coaxial cable, Ethernet cable, and power cable from my old modem. I then Plugged my coaxial cable into the SB6120, plugged the power in and then connected my Ethernet cord directly into my computer. I immediately got the cox account sign-up page which told me to call technical support if I already had an account set up, took me a couple minutes to navigate through the automated support and get a person to talk to. After that he knew exactly what he was doing and after giving me a bit of info about the modem it rebooted by itself and worked perfectly. I did a speedtest before I switched the modem and it was about 10 & 2.25 download/upload; afterwords it's now about 16 & 3. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone, cox customer or not.

Customer Review: Great modem...download speed went from 25 to 50Mbps!
Summary: 5 Stars

I switched my old D-Link Cable Modem for this modem and immediately after installing, my speeds went up 100%! I have seen my connection hit 70+Mbps (on a wireless connection) on Comcast's Speed test website and in other speed test sites. That is super FAST! The only negative side for this modem is that my upload speed went from 8Mbps with the other modem to 3.5Mbps in this one. Weird. Although my service is rated for 2Mbps upload speeds, I still find it annoying that my old modem was able to squeeze 8Mbps on the uploads but this one seems to be more "controlable" by Comcast, at least on the upload side of things.

Although this is a significant set back (less than 50% speed upload compared to my old modem), it still will get 5 stars from me just for the ease of installation and the super download speeds it allows. From Box to working it took me 30 minutes (including calling Comcast so they could add it to their system).

Remember that this modem alone will not give you super wireless speeds...it might allow you to increase a bit; but if you want the super WIRELESS speeds, then you will need a router that is rated for high speed, a card on your computer that is also rated for high speeds, and a FAST Internet service.

This modem is back compatible with DOCSIS 2.0, so it should work fine with any cable connection out there. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
