Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable ModemCustomer Review: Great Modem, Much Faster Speed Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this new modem because Comcast notified me that I needed to upgrade from my old DOCSIS 1.1 modem or my service would stop working on December 7. The Motorala SB1620 DOCSIS 3.0 modem actually arrived faster than I had expected and once I got it installed my data speed increased greatly; downlink speed has gone from around 5Mbps to over 30, and uplink from around 1.0 Mbps to 3.5. Had I know that I would have been glad to have upgraded much sooner. The modem itself was very easy to install. The only problem was getting the modem registered with Comcast, which was not due to any fault of the modem. The original Comcast tech rep I had talked with incorrectly told me the new modem would automatically register, which used to be true in the old days. However, after waiting for several hours with no result, I finally called and the second rep said the first rep was wrong and they had to manually register it, and it might take up to 24 hours, and I should put my old modem back in till then! However the old modem now seemed to not work either, so I called again and got a third tech rep who was very helpful and was able to register the new modem in real time, and stayed on the line with me until it was working. The only other odd thing is that one of the several indicator lights on the modem is a "link" indicator that flashes at a constant rate (rather than just staying on like the others), which is kind of disconcerting until you get used to it. But that is a very minor item compared to the greatly increased performance.
Customer Review: Simple (as it should be) - Don't expect miracles Summary: 5 Stars
This replaced a 1st gen docsis 2 modem in preparation for upgrading my net service to higher speed that requires docsis 3 hardware. Simpler setup than this does not exist. There's an included software installation CD which I haven't looked at yet.
The one thing I miss from my old modem is a top button which instantly suspended all net traffic without shutting the unit off. I found this handy on a few occasions. Much easier than accessing the software firewall or unplugging the modem power.
Last, a comment on those observing an "amazing speed boost" after starting this modem. It's impossible since it's centrally managed and you are experiencing one of the following:
A) You upgraded from a docsis 1 modem which capped your already available bandwith and now you're seeing speeds already available to you before.
B) Your previous modem was defective.
c) Most likely, if using an online D/L meter to test speed, what your're seeing is the increased speed during "powerboost" spike available from providers like Comcast, but the actual steady speed is the same. My powerboost d/l speed jumped from upper teens-low 20's (x 1000) kbps to upper 20's-low 30's with the SB6120. However the steady d/l speed once powerboost timed out remained unchanged from the prior modem which was unable to keep up with the full potential of the max speed that powerboost offers.
BTW: don't confuse kbps with KBps and Mbps. Know the difference and use the same constant when comparing speeds.
Customer Review: It pays to upgrade your modem Summary: 5 Stars
I saw on my bill that my favorite cable company is going to increase the modem rental fee from $3 to $5 per month. That prompted me to look at buying my own modem (long overdue, I know).
I had been seeing pretty slow speeds (3-4 Mb/s down; wacky results up). I had an RCA modem from Comcast that is at least 6 years old. I'm supposed to have 12 Mb/s down and 2 up.
I looked at the Motorola Surfboard SB5101, which is about $[...] cheaper than this one currently. Then I saw this one. I called Comcast to see whether my area has been upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0, and got a gibberish response. The person actually told me this modem wouldn't work for me. That didn't square with what I was seeing on various Internet sites.
So I called again. This time, I was told I would not see any faster speeds unless I paid to upgrade my service, but that a DOCSIS 3.0 modem would work. So I bought this one. Big difference in speed. Now I get 15-20 Mb/s down and 8-10 up. I'm not sure whether Comcast is deliberately giving bad information, but I think even if you are on their base plan it pays to spend the money to upgrade to this modem. And why rent?
It took about 1/2 hour on the phone to get them to change the modem MAC ID and billing. Pretty painless, although if you get someone who seems clueless, hang up and call back. I have the impression that if you call late at night, you get Canadian tech support people who are generally very good, although for this I called in the daytime.

I use this in Utah with Comcast. I bought it to drop the lease fee. I had the earlier version of the motorola. I was paying the 10 dollars a month for 16 Megabits. I normally would see about 20 megabits though. I downgraded to the 12 megabit to save money then bought this modem both to save money off the monthly bill. I went a few days with the 12 megabit with the old modem and was seeing about 16 megabits instead of the 20. When I installed this new modem and got it activated I got my original 20 megabits back. So I see about a 4 megabit improvement. The best part is I am still only paying for the 12 megabits. I feel this is the real speed because if I get on a reliable server and do a large download. I see about 2 MB per second download sometimes I hit 2.3 MB So I feel the speed I see on the meter tests are accurate. I don't think its the boost thing either because I download say 5 gig files and the speed is consistent to the end. I am very pleased with this product. I have it down in a spare room in my basement and I have not had to do one resets or mess with it in any way I don't even know it is there most of the time. I have an Apple Airpot Extreme they both are on the same ups backup. The only problem I have had with my internet was we had some lightning and my Airport went crazy, reseting it did not fix it I thought it was fried then it just started working again. That is the reason for the backup and it offers lightning protection. Anyway buy this product you should see a speed increase
Customer Review: excellent modem Summary: 5 Stars
This modem has performed up to and beyond my expectations.
I decided to get this modem after i was having issues with my internet connection. It seams my service provider upgraded their systems and wher using a new system that worked better with the type 3.0 bios. My older modem only had 2.0. The result was with my older modem i kept getting slow downs and odd disconnections. After researching these problems alot i discovered this was the result of the upgrade and an older bios. This modem was easy to install. I simply just removed my old one and put this one in.
Contrary to other posts this didnt die or break down in less then a day....
The only thing i recommend people to do....is to remeber machines and items are like very small children...you sometimes have to be very patient and thoughrough with them.
After i installed it....i called my service provider and told them about the change. Simple and easy the person on the phone asked for it seriel number and model number...both located on the unit. he then reset the line and suggested i do the same on my end....once he had it up and giving him a good sugnal i was good to go.
So far it has increased my bandwidth speed and stopped my issues i had before.
I recommned this one to anyone who is thinking about upgrading as it works like the older versions.
I have yet to have any issues with it.
