Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable ModemCustomer Review: Excellent Performance Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent Performance and Easy Installation.
This Motorola SB6120 modem increased download speeds by 30 percent, compared to my previous modem, using the same cable (Comcast) service plan. Testing at [...] showed the SB6120 downloading at 20 mb/s compared to 15 mb/s with my old Linksys BEFCMU10 modem. Upload speeds showed no change. This modem is currently being used, in my system, to receive normal speed cable DOCSIS 2 signals. However it is designed to handle the significantly higher speeds of DOCSIS 3 if the cable subscriber wishes to upgrade.
Installation involved disconnecting the old modem and attaching the same coax cable, network cable, and new power supply plug to the SB6120. After which one must call the Cable Provider (Comcast in my case.) and supply them with the information listed on the modem: Model, Customer S/N, and HFC MAC ID. The provider will then activate the modem in about two minutes. Modem lights will indicate progress. After which you must restart the router, or computer, in order to accept the new settings. The whole process took about 5 minutes.
For further information see the User Guide. The setup information in the user guide is not needed if one already has an existing internet connection.
CONS: Annoyingly bright blinking amber Link light to indicate modem to router connection. This light overwhelms subdued cable and internet connection lights and is not even necessary since the same information can be obtained from the router. Even placing a piece of tape over that light does not help as the light is so bright it is reflected from the interior of the modem.

Customer Review: Good, some people miss the point here... Summary: 5 Stars
Ordered this modem, received it quickly with no trouble. Mine was new, not used like some people have unfortunately received, in unopened packaging with a clear log history and unopened CD and cables etc. So no trouble there. The modem itself is a major improvement over my trusty years-old Docsis 2.0 BEFCMU10 v.4. Not so much in terms of speed, but in terms of maintaining that speed. And that is really what channel bonding is all about. Let me explain. This modem won't double your download speed by itself, and that's not the point. With Comcast you'll always come back to your provisioned rate plus about 20% extra that they give you gratis, except those areas with the D3 rollout is relatively new and they haven't stabilized the caps yet. I too was getting ridiculous speeds last year when D3 rollout happened, be warned in a couple months when they're done testing they do come back down to earth. But the main improvement is that my prior modem without channel bonding would slow down significantly in the evenings between about 7pm-11pm (when everyone else on my node is also watching Netflix and surfing). This modem divides the traffic between 4 bonded channels, which allows it to always deliver my provisioned rate even during high network traffic periods. This has solved a significant amount of problems with my HD streaming. If you're noticing that you normally have no trouble streaming HD movies at off times, but have trouble during that 7pm-11pm window, this modem will likely solve your node crowding problem. As a side note, it is slightly faster, but the difference is really the total/complete lack of any of the common network congestion issues. Channel bonding FTW!

I had company paid internet service including cable modem rental. When the company decided it no longer needed to provide internet service I searched on ebay and found the same model cable modem on ebay. After two years on the used cable modem I started experiencing a 25%-30% packet loss. High packet loss really takes the fun out of browsing the internet! I went to the wall of cheap things site and found this modem highly rated and at a good price but it was going to take a week and a half to get it delivered. I found the same modem on Amazon for a few cents higher with a 3-5 day delivery time. Last night my wife about killed me because of the poor performance she had when browsing for pictures for a school project. Fortunately my new modem arrived today after 2 days. I opened the package threw the instructions aside and plugged in the new modem. I spent an entire 5 minutes on the phone with cable support giving them the clearly labeled mac address on the new modem. I rebooted the wired PC and it was up. I ran a speed test [...] and packet loss test (cmd then ping[...] -t for about 3 minutes and then press control-c) and found I was running between 0% and 1% packet loss over several tests. I then tested my laptops wirelessly and they are now working great. My area only had DOCSIS 2.0 but I'm ready for DOCSIS 3.0 when it becomes available. I have a 5MB down, 2MB up contract and after plugging in this modem I am getting around 12-15 MB down with 6BM up when wired and around 11-12MB down and 5MB up on wireless within 100 ft. I'm very satisified with my new modem. Granted I've only had it up a few hours but so far it's great!

Customer Review: Easy and fast. Great product. Summary: 5 Stars
After I moved about a month ago, I became a Cox customer once again. I had a Surfboard 4100 modem that was about 10 years old. I had been using it with my old service provider Orbitel, and it was still providing good performance, but when I made the switch to Cox about a month ago, I noticed my downloads from iTunes were taking a lot longer. Then without warning, my internet started going down frequently. Resetting my modem seemed to do the trick for a while, but the frequent outages became annoying. When Cox told me I was using an unsupported modem, and that it was likely that it was starting to fail, I didn't want to hear it. But after a while, and realizing that 10 years is a long time to get use out of any electronics product, I decided to take the plunge and buy the SB6120. (Full disclosure, I bought mine at Best Buy for a slightly higher price due to tax, only because I had some important work to do that weekend, and I needed to re-establish a reliable connection right away.) It turned out to be the right solution. My downloads now are much faster, and I've had no more outages since replacing my old modem. It was very easy to install. I had to call Cox support to provide them the serial number for the new modem. I plugged everything in, and powered on the new modem. It took a few minutes for the modem to boot up completely the first time, which was longer than I was used to. But it's been about 5 days now, and the outages every 4 hours or so are gone. I wasn't expecting to get such a big performance boost by replacing my cable modem either, but I'm very happy to have made the switch.
Customer Review: All good!! Summary: 5 Stars
Comcast customer for years. Thank you, I appreciate your sympathy, it's not easy.
Anyway, heard modem rental is going up a couple bucks next year and decided to start looking. Cable modem rentals are a rip off if you plan more than two years. My old Comcast modem was starting to need reboots everyday, so I ordered one. Old modem died just when I got my new one. Good timing.
Well, cable modems are pretty simple from a user point of view. Called Comcast CS and was up in 5 minutes. Connection is rock solid now. No need to reboot so far and no short internet disconnects either. My speed has also increased to 31-32 Mbps down and 7-8 Mbps upload. That's about a 20% increase over what I peaked on the old one. My speed is also MUCH MUCH more reliable. Almost like I'm on my own line. Impressive!!
My download light is blue - indicating a bonded channel. Maybe, maybe not. It's hard to say whether that is really accurate or not. We have Docsis3.0 in the Twin Cities but it's supposed to be for the really big speed tiers. Commercial/business, etc. But with cable you never know.
It's important to remember that your internet speed is MOSTLY controlled by things you have no power over. A new modem or a new Docsis3.0 capable modem do not guarantee any speed increase. Theoretically, it should ONLY matter (for most) if your old modem is dying, old or an upgrade to a Docsis3.0 HSI tier. However, it is surprising how many people have replaced an old modem with this one and have had similar results as I have.
