Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Monster Cable PGL300 S-Video Cable for PlayStation 2Customer Review: Good but expensive cable. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a really good quality cable and I do notice a better picture using it. The cable is a bit pricey though.
Customer Review: MC NOT SUPERIOR TO SONY S-VIDEO IN MY TESTS Summary: 3 Stars
I have a new 55" Mistubishi Diamond Series Widescreen HDTV and the picture is horrible from the PS2 S-Video input in the front on the two games I play, Madden 2001 and Triple Play. The picture is nearly flawless from my high end Mitsubishi DVD player and from my RCA HDTV receiver when on DirectTV's HBO channel 509, so it's not the set. I tried both Sony's s-video and component cables and Monster's pricier s-video and component cables. The picture is extremely poor on all with no noticeable difference between them. The picture is so poor that playing on the set is distasteful, so fellow upper end HDTV widescreen owners should not expect to play satisfying PS2 on these types of sets. The problem is the low end quality of the PS2's DVD player; I actually tested 6 different DVD players at The Good Guys on the same set and all had very noticeable distortion until you got into the $700+ range. I actually had to trade my first DVD player in as a result. Therefore, unless Sony upgrades the PS2 player in the future (unlikely because of cost), playing on this type of set is not going to be acceptable to you or me. SIDENOTE: I did also test both the Sony and Monster s-video cables on my 27" Sony Trinitron and although the Monster looked about 5% better, the difference was so negligible it was not worth the extra money. So if you're using a more standard television, again, on this score the Sony entry would be my recommendation. I should note I never used the standard a/v cables that come with the PS2.
Customer Review: It's good but not good enough Summary: 3 Stars
I had just bought the Monster Cable last week from Amazon andwhen arrived I was a bit surprised. I have nine games for my PS2 andfor most of them there was not much difference in the quality invideo, but the audio was very good. The games I have are SSX,TekkenTag, DOA2, Z.O.E(MGS2demo), Timespliters, Onimusha, Summoner,RidgeRacer, and SilentScope. The first four games I mentioned did looka little better but not as hyped up as Monster said it would be. Thenagain I also heard that it depends on what type of TV you have but Ijust bought a Panasonic 20" tube tv... I used to have a old 1995Panasonic with no component input and for some reason the backgroundson my games look sharper than the new one I just bought lastthursday. So to be real with, I really wanted to give this cable afive stars but it really did not impress my the way it should of. Thenagain it could be the brand new component tv I just bought.
Customer Review: Cabling helps in some cases Summary: 3 Stars
Depending on the quality of your television, the added benefit of these cables is questionable. If you have smaller or a low-end TV, this can help your experience considerably. Now, when you have a high-end television, say the Sony Wega XBR line of televisions, you may only benefit slightly from using these cables (possibly not justifying cost). Also, if you are putting the PS2 through your home theater setup (i.e. video switching through your receiver) you must make sure you are sending it from your receiver to TV using the most effective means possible, obviously, to ensure the highest possible experience. To be honest, Monster does have some great products, but some are rather overpriced for what you're getting. Don't always fall for their marketing chatter.
Customer Review: Great cable, but no visual improvements over the others Summary: 3 Stars
The Monster Cable Gamelink 300 is really nice. Its a great feeling, and looking cable. HOWEVER, it really doesnt improve picture quality over the cheaper svideo cables. I just bought one the monster cable and tried it out just now. Visually, there is no difference between it and the madcatz cable i owned already. I love the look and feel of this cable, it has great connectors that hug the connection ports very tightly. But again.. its not really worth it if you dont have the money to spend. I'd say save it and buy one of the other brands, such as sony, or madcatz. If you want looks, and a dam good cable.. get the monster cable. But dont expect any visual improvements.
