Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Monster Cable GameLink 400 Component-Video Cable for PlayStation 2 (10 feet)

Customer Review: Great for DVD's
Summary: 4 Stars

If you plan on watching DVD's on your PS2, then this is a very worthwhile purchase. I have a nice Sony flat screen and while this did not make a tremendous difference for gaming, the picture difference was quite evident and blew me away when watching DVD's. If you plan on using your PS2 as a DVD player, this is a good purchase.

Customer Review: Don't forget to turn on the water!
Summary: 4 Stars

Unnecessary high price knocks a star off of this one, but they work just as well as the Sony ones. Luckily I got these for free.

Customer Review: COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT COMPONENT VIDEO CABLES FOR PS2
Summary: 3 Stars

I have a 27" Sony Wega T.V. Unlike other reviewers, I actually bought three different component video cables for the ps2. Call me picky, call me obsessive or call me pathetic, but I wanted to know if there truly was a difference between the monster component cable and the other cheaper ones. The answer is: not that I could see. When I first got my PS2 I bought the mad katz S-VIDEO because I didn't even know what component video was. Later, I found out I had component video on my T.V. and also found out that it was supposed to be an even better input than s-video. So I purchased the pelikan brand component video cable [...]. Unlike other reviewers, I saw a tremendous difference going from s-video to component video. Clearer picture, brighter colors; an overall improvement--not an improvement you had to look for, it was OBVIOUS. Later I was searching ebay and found an incredible deal: the sony brand component video cable, factory packaged for [...]. And honestly, it DID make a difference. I can't totally describe it except to say that it seemed to give a better color representation; the picture simply looked better--although not dramatically better than the picture created by the pelikan cable. So then I said "might as well try the monster". I honestly saw NO difference between the Sony cable and the Monster cable. I pay a lot of attention to detail--too much in fact. So if there was a difference to be seen, I presume I would have seen it. It's possible that the Monster cable would make a difference on an HDTV, but on my T.V., it did not. If you have a T.V. that is not HD but has the component inputs, use them, but I suggest just using the sony brand component cable to get the performance of the moster cable without the price.

Customer Review: MC MADE NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN MY TESTS
Summary: 3 Stars

I have a new 55" Mistubishi Diamond Series Widescreen HDTV and the picture is horrible from the PS2 S-Video input in the front on the two games I play, Madden 2001 and Triple Play. The picture is nearly flawless from my high end Mitsubishi DVD player and from my RCA HDTV receiver when on DirectTV's HBO channel 509, so it's not the set.

I tried both Sony's s-video and component cables and Monster's pricier s-video and component cables. The picture is extremely poor on all with no noticeable difference between them. The picture is so poor that playing on the set is distasteful, so fellow upper end HDTV widescreen owners should not expect to play satisfying PS2 on these types of sets.

The problem is the low end quality of the PS2's DVD player; I actually tested 6 different DVD players at The Good Guys on the same set and all had very noticeable distortion until you got into the $700+ range. I actually had to trade my first DVD player in as a result. Therefore, unless Sony upgrades the PS2 player in the future (unlikely because of cost), playing on this type of set is not going to be acceptable to you or me.

SIDENOTE: I did also test both the Sony and Monster s-video cables on my 27" Sony Trinitron and although the Monster looked about 5% better, the difference was so negligible it was not worth the extra money. So if you're using a more standard television, again, on this score the Sony entry would be my recommendation.

I should note I never used the standard a/v cables that come with the PS2.
