Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Monster Cable GCGL300 SV-10 GameCube S-Video A/V Cable (10 Feet)Customer Review: S Video is good Summary: 5 Stars
I am mostly writing this to correct a comment made in the previous review. S-Video does not enable progressive scan output, only component video allows that. The Gamecube component video cable is only available through nintendo's website. Aside from that, this is the best way to hook up your gamecube!
Customer Review: BIG Difference Summary: 5 Stars
MUCH clearer than standard A/V cables with nicer color as well. I see little details I never noticed before.
Customer Review: Not only for the Gamecube...compatible with Nintendo 64 Summary: 4 Stars
I recently bought this S-video cable more out of a desire to enhance the visual quality of my older Nintendo 64 rather than having anything to do with my Nintendo Gamecube. I happen to own a high definition TV and could easily purchase high def component cables for progressive scan compatable Gamecube titles. This review was written with Nintendo 64 owners in mind, who are spoiled by next generation picture clarity and cannot bare to suffer for blurry colors, and blocky or choppy environments. I have to say that it is difficult to find a set of cables which support the Nintendo 64 and alter the quality of the overall picture in any way that will make a spectacular difference. Buying high def component cables tailor made for Gamecube might seem reasonable enough considering that most of the cables on the market that fit Gamecube also fit the Nintendo 64. But the end results are negligable when you consider the cost of those cords, then compare them to a set of these video-S monster cables. The difference is minimal at best. From what I have seen, these monster cables cost less than high def component cables yet offer an equaled quality or even better. The Nintendo 64 hardware and or software really don't support high definiton anyways. You CAN however improve the color and texture quality of your Nintendo 64 in two ways.
1) buy these monster cables for Gamecube. They are relatively cheap, and are more reliable with most television models than some 3rd party cables. They are a lengthy 10 feet and the cords are very thick and durable. They are quality I assure you.
2)Make sure to purchase a Nintendo 64 expansion pak. The effectiveness of the cords alone will only carry so far, the Nintendo 64 hardware is partially to blame for it's lackluster visual details.
...So buy the expansion pak and these cords and you will certainly view the difference.
Customer Review: Still Going Strong Summary: 4 Stars
Quickie: Durable. Works.
Out of curiosity, I decided to review one of the oldest orders I placed on Amazon that is still stored. That would be this Monster S-Video Gamecube cable. I purchased it in 2004 and it is now 2011 and it still works like the day I bought it.
S-VIDEO: As some others have pointed out, this should also work with Super Nintendo and N64 (YMMV). S-Video, in practice with most devices, is like composite video (those single yellow RCA connectors) with the luminance and color channels split out - theoretically giving a better signal-to-noise ratio and eliminating color crosstalk.
If you think this will improve picture quality, the amount is negligible if any. Sometimes, due to the older hardware and rendering, it highlights artifacts. For me, it heightened the artifacts in Mario Sunshine on one my TVs (if you actively looked for them). In the normal course of play, I didn't see them.
RCA audio: These connectors are stiff on some TVs. Fine if you plan on hooking them up once and leaving it. But, if you have an older TV with only one video input and swap cables for a DVD or other console a lot, it was a little frustrating. However, I never messed the connectors on the cable or TV up, so again, durable.
BOTTOM LINE: If you're buying it because you have a free S-Video, or S-Video is the only one that works, or just want the option of S-Video (say a computer monitor), then I would recommend this cable. However, if it is because of a perceived video improvement over a working composite cable that comes standard, save your cash.
Customer Review: Nice, but go with the component cable if you got the $$. Summary: 4 Stars
This product will give superior picture over the standard coax and composite cables. If your TV has a S-Video input, but no compent input, you won't be disappointed with these. Try comparing the pictures by using the standard cables and then the S-Video cable. You'll really notice the difference (the colors will be more vibrant and the image sharper).
If you want the ultimate in picture clarity, get the component cables though. I don't think Monster Cable makes component for the GameCube (I wish they did), but you'll be able to find other manufacturers that make them.
I only give this product 4 stars because I'm using component cables and it definitely makes a difference over the S-Video cable. If Monster Cable ever came out with the GameCube version of the component cable, I'll most likely but it over my current ones.
