Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP MonsterDigital PowerCenter800G w/ Green Power 8 Outlets, 1 Pr. Coax , Phone, Network (HPM MDP 800G ES)Customer Review: One of the coolest surge protector features out there. Summary: 5 Stars
I was pretty hesitant to shell out this kind of cash for a surge protector. Especially given how much Monster tends to over-charge for their entire line up. The joule rating was impressive, for starters. 8 outlets should be enough for most anyone, and they are spaced far enough out to accommodate larger block plugs. I wasn't sold on the "Stage 1 Clean Power", and am still not convinced it's actually doing anything for me. The $250,000 connected equipment warranty, while I realize is probably almost impossible to collect upon, is still reassuring nonetheless. The outlets are all pre-labeled and color coded, which comes with matching tags for your plugs, which is convenient if you find yourself confusing plugs often. But far and away the best thing about this, which sold me on it right away, is the "Green Power" feature, which turns off three of the outlets if you turn off the device that's plugged into the "control" outlet. So for me, when I power down my receiver, it automatically turns off the outlet for my PS3, my Xbox 360, and my subwoofer, which I wouldn't be using anyway. This way I cut down on standby power consumption. Awesome. Much better than having to turn the whole surge protector off, because I also have my modem plugged in here, and would prefer to keep that on all the time. It'll pay for itself, so get this before you consider any other models, it's totally worth it!
**Important!!** Go with this model, the co-branded HP/Monster 800G. There is a similar unit, an exclusive Monster brand, the 900G. They both look identical, have nearly the same joule rating, and the same specs and features. After looking at both, and even contacting customer support, I can say that there are ONLY 3 DIFFERENCES. 1) The HP/Monster 800G has labels that are for a computer, ie "computer, monitor, scanner, etc", while the 900G has more generic labels. I personally don't care that my receiver is plugged into an outlet that's labeled "computer". 2) The 800G contains the "PC Clean Power Stage 1", while the 900G contains the "HD Clean Power Stage 1" feature. They're the exact same thing. 3) Price. The 900G is NEARLY TWICE AS EXPENSIVE. Save yourself the money and buy the 800G.**
