Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Mobile Edge Mini Messenger Bag Black/Orange great for NetbooksCustomer Review: Mighty Mite! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure what to make of this sprite, this mighty mite. As a self-confessed bag whore, I can find a point and purpose to almost any luggage purchase, so long as it's well-made and reasonably stylish. Like a few other items -- clothes, shoes, cookware -- bags earn their merit through tactile features that are difficult to gauge online: will it be big enough? Sturdy for the long haul? Will I be able to fit what I need but no more? Will it become a buddy in the heat of war? We have reviews to help us sort through such issues, yet nothing replaces the joy of good "handfeel."
This is a bag to love from a construction point of view. Rubbery zippers, pockets galore. You almost feel like a secret agent with all the places to stash and store and stow. It's well designed, well thought out. Immediately your mind begins to assign items for pockets, pouches and compartments. In that sense, it has real density. Bags twice this size do not exploit storage possibilities half so well. You keep saying things like "clever" and "wow" and "Hmm, what can I come up with for that?"
As a motorcycle rider, I can tell you that your dream is to have a stable of bikes: one for off road, one for cross-country, one for the canyon twisties. I thought I had a bag for damned near every occasion, but then this... mini showed up like a spry show pony, like a svelte scooter, like a trike on 'roids. What it seems to be made for is a netbook and its accessories. For that it will excel and win best in class for sure. What it won't do is allow you to bring a notebook along and all its friends, at least not the standard hardbound oldschool variety notebook that I happen to write my first drafts in. A journal, yes. A clipboard, not so much. And therein lies the quandary.
I love the thing, I'm just slightly at a loss. For me it becomes an utterly equisite book bag and a research assistant, a carry-on extraordinaire. I haven't picked out a netbook yet, but as soon as I've got one, it will have an instant home. This is not some rugged man-purse; it's a cousin, a distant nephew of a standard messenger bag. I believe it owns a whole niche of its own!
And by the bye, thank you Mobile Edge for responding so quickly to customers who noted the lack of a handle to grasp it by. Mine came with one, and it happens to be rubbery as well. You can sell me virtually anything with a rubber coating: a hard drive, a banana. Heck, my Ford Ranger could have come with a rubberized exterior and I'd love it all the more. I'm convinced it belongs on just about everything.
This is the sort of bag you buy when you need inspiration, when you're stuck in a rut between Tom Robbins novels. When it's time to buck up and ask out the pretty girl at the bar. When you seek the guts to sing karaoke in front of strangers. I can't imagine anybody who owns this bag being a stick-in-the-mud. Like owning a pair of skis or a Suburu outback. Hiking boots. A backpack. This bag was made for people who GO.
In short (sort of)... I love it! Just don't expect me to tell you precisely why. Not yet anyway. I'll have to get back to you as soon as the mighty mite and I return from our first trip together to San Fransisco... ;)
