Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Midland NTVP1 Nautico 88-Channel Water-Resistant VHF Marine Two-Way Radio

Customer Review: Good bang for the buck
Summary: 5 Stars

Exactly as advertised. Works great and includes all accesories as shown. Not as nice as some others I have seen in the $200 rage, but an excellent value.

Customer Review: Marine Handheld Radio
Summary: 5 Stars

It works great. The earpiece was especially helpful as my husband directed boating friends at a recent rendezvous.

Customer Review: Great portable radio.
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this for my parents to use out on Lake Superior and they are very happy with it.

Customer Review: Undocumented button sequence
Summary: 4 Stars

I have both the water-resistant model and the less expensive model that comes with the waterproof case. For the money both are excellent. I was having the same problem with both radios leading me to believe there may be a button pushing sequence that would allow the radios to function as advertised.

The problem is that under some conditions, the radio gets locked in a situation where the channels and features can't be changed. Also the scanning feature is disabled. The only available capabilities are channels 16/9 and the weather channels.

After wrestling with this for a while,it turns out that the solution is really quite simple. The problem occurs after you enter the weather channels and then then switch to Channel 16. You now loose the ability to scan and change channels. To get out of the problem, enter the weather channels and hold the Menu button down to exit the weather channels. This will restore the functionality. As I think about this, it is logical that the method of getting into the weather channels, and as a result, getting into this problem, was holding the Menu button down.

Customer Review: Great price for VHF
Summary: 4 Stars

Menu not very intuitive, but works great for the price. Best price I could find with dual power.

Update. I have had this VHF for several years, with only moderate use. Not highly recommended. I have had sudden battery failures, with the low battery warning level giving no indication (from full charge, to dead). Recharging resolves, but frustrating when you are using radio just before second race start. When I first received the radio, I tested it with 30 second dunk in sink water, which worked. Last weekend, spent about 15 minutes in local bay area water. Deepest the VHF had gone, was 2' to 3'. The radio was in the provided "water proof" case (not an after market). The VHF water proofing failed miserably. Inside of radio was saturated.
