First of all, Amazon.com is great - best price, free shipping that's quick, and NO tax. Beat that! The Midlands WR-300 Weather Radio is the best weather radio on the market and works flawlessly. DO NOT believe the less than favorable reviews you read here; this radio works as designed and advertised, and might save you life. The people that wrote these negative reviews obviously have not set this unit up correctly. The WR-300 is not a toy. It is a sophisticated piece of electronics that works perfectly if set up correctly. You must read and understand the detailed Owners Manual before attempting to set up this unit to operate as it was designed to do. You simply cannot plug this radio in and expect it to work perfectly. If set up correctly, with the proper Weather Channel Frequency and S.A.M.E. codes entered for your counties of interest, this unit will perform flawlessly and possibly save your life in the event of a severe weather outbreak, especially while asleep. As a 20+ year retired US Air Force Weather Forecaster, I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to be informed of potential or imminent severe weather in your area.Customer Review: NOAA Weather and Alert Radio

Not certain why folks are having difficulty entering SAME codes. They are more than readily available. The only thing you need to remember is that "0" is the first number. My work includes supporting NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations and the National Weather Service, this radio is perfect. Reception is excellent. Glad I read the reviews here first - did NOT waste my money on the Eton/Grundig radio. In fairness, Grundig makes good radios - shortwave at least. Midland WR-300 and the quick start are excellent. For those wanted more info on SAME codes, a better link is http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrrcvr.htm as this is NOAA's Weather Radio site.
Do not confuse the requirement for SAME vs. FIPS. SAME uses the three digit state code and then the remainder of the code IS the FIPS code. Makes things easier to remember and enter. It's nice that Midland added a page in the back so you can write in all of the SAME codes and what they mean right in the manual.
Enjoy this radio. I know people working in the National Weather Service who have this on their desk, at work!

We bought this radio after the Tornadoes hit Florida in February in the middle of the night. That event was a serious reminder that a Hazards Radio can be as important to saving your life as a good smoke detector.
I looked at the WR-100 and the WR-300 and went with this unit. I believe the WR-300 is definitely worth the extra $$. Both have county-specific set-up which keeps you from getting woken up for alerts two counties away, but the WR-300 goes one step further and adds the capability to disable the audio alarm individually for some 30 or so specific alerts. For example, we diabled the Winter Weather items (since these are of little consequence in North Texas), as well as the Flood items since we live nowhere near a creak or other body of water. But we left the Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, and Boil Water (?!) items audible-enabled.
This unit also has a Clock Radio with AM/FM (3 memory presets each) and a 9-minute snooze button.
These NOAA radios have come a long way, and this one is worth more than the price we paid for it.

Although we've only had this for a short time, I am very impressed! I didn't find it at all difficult to program. The "beeps" are a bit annoying, but once set up I don't see when this would be a continous problem. We got this strictly for the weather, etc. alert monitor, NOT for the clock/radio features, that's just an added bonus. It's nice to have the local weather just a push button away, and also to get the heads up for the severe weather in the area. The siren when placed on HIGH, is loud enough to raise the dead! Which is good, since my husband is hard of hearing AND our home is large. Our power gets knocked out quite often, since we live out in the country. This will let us know exactly what's going on with the weather,etc., since it is backed up with 4 AA batteries (not included). The threat of tornando's is our MAIN concern, if we have just 5 minutes notice, it may be a just enough time needed to get to safety. After checking different places, this was the best price here on Amazon. You can't go wrong with the price and the FREE shipping. This weather radio is well worth the money. After quite a bit of research I bought this weather radio for my husband for Fathers' Day. We live at the top of a hill and with four daughters we take tornado warnings seriously, so we wanted a weather alert radio in our room for nights. I want to be woke up at 3a.m. if there is a tornado warning for my county, but not if there is a flood watch two counties away. This radio is fully programmable and allows you to select which county or counties you receive alerts for as well as which alerts, watches, and warnings. You are also able to choose between a voice warning, siren, or strobe (not included.) We have ours set to alarm. I would prefer a louder alarm, as if the unit is upstairs I cannot usually hear it on the main floor (not when the kids are awake anyway.) We knew this ahead of time based on other reviews, and intended on using it to wake us, which the alarm will do. If you have a large house with multiple levels, you may consider purchasing a second unit. Other than the volume of the alarm, we have no complaints with our unit.
