Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of MIDLAND WR300 Weather Radio

Customer Review: Initial Feedback on WR-300
Summary: 5 Stars

We just experienced a major tornado near where we live and saw the tremendous damage caused. After seeing the damage, I decided to invest in a weather radio. I conducted an extensive on-line review and settled on the WR-300. Several writers complained about the complexity in setting up the radio and poor radio quality. I was looking for weather alert features and flexibility which the WR-300 provides.

The package arrived yesterday and it took about 15 minutes to program the radio. I'm not sure why people are so adverse to reading things now a day because I read the instructions and easily figured out how to program the radio to alert me only on certain SAME codes with filters I could define. I was able to select how much, or how little, info and alert warning I wanted. As far as I'm concerned, this product is meeting my needs.

As far as the radio goes, I use it to wake up in the morning. Given I'm half asleep anyway I don't fret over the "sound quality." As a matter of fact I woke up this morning and did not notice any difference in sound quality than from my original desk radio. Again, if someone wants to have quality radio sound and a weather radio, buy a new radio and something other than the WR-300. If it wakes me during an actual alert (my number 1 priority)or just for me to get my morning coffee (an added bonus), then I'm quite satisfied.

We have not had bad weather yet so I cannot comment on how well it performs. Once I have some experience with this I'll pass my impressions along.

Bottom line: If you want a product that gives you flexible options with an ability to select your level of "comfort," then this appears to be the best option I could find. If you'd like a simple radio to wake you in the morning and really don't care about sound quality, then this appears to be a viable option.

Customer Review: Best weather radio I have ever had...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a superb weather radio. I have been searching and tried a number of consumer retail weather radios over the years in the moderately expensive price range. None have performed, as well as, the Midland WR-300. It works absolutely flawlessly as a weather radio. If one follows the directions it is extremely easy to setup and use. Also, the alert alarm is loud and clear. I have been using the one I have for a number of months.

I have never had a missed alert with the WR-300. It responds to all of the NOAA test signals perfectly. It also responds to all of the tornado alerts, floods, amber alerts, just everything perfectly where I live. And the reception is very stable and clear. Never, have I seen a consumer retail weather radio perform like the WR-300. Just as a note, I am also an electronics professional and have a very clear understanding of electronic equipment.

This radio is perfect as a weather radio. If you are looking for an alarm clock, an AM/FM radio, etc. then this is not the radio for you. It is, however, a superb weather radio. The clock is difficult to see and use as an alarm clock and the AM/FM reception leaves a lot to be desired in selectivity, reception and tonal quality. I think the goal of the designers was to deliver a wonderful weather radio and the AM/FM broadcast bands and alarm clock functions were secondary.

With this said, I do need to add that the tonal quality of the weather information is superb and exceptionally clear, as well, as the stability of the receptivity NOAA signal. Just FYI, what I do is use the WR-300 as a high quality weather radio, but I have a separate clock radio with AM/FM, alarm clock, etc.

I give the WR-300 my highest rating possible as a fine consumer retail weather radio for every day use.

Customer Review: Midland WR-300 Weather Radio
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased this radio and could not be more pleased. I checked out others on the market and read every review posted on this site.

Not to minimize the frustrations of others, but like most, I did not find setting it up to be a problem.

Regarding the critique about it being promoted as a clock radio, I don't agree with the criticism. It should not be purchased for the purpose of replacing an alarm clock/radio. This unit is first and foremost a weather radio and a very good one at that. The fact that it has the alarm feature makes it that much more appealing. For those who absolutely have to get up at a particular time, it's nice to know you have a second alarm clock with a battery backup that will wake you up even if the power goes out.

I love the fact that it not only has SAME technology, but also the feature of disabling the sirens for the less threatening situations. One reviewer of a DIFFERENT weather radio expressed his frustration of being awakened by his radio for thunderstorms. That would not be an issue with this radio. But if you did want to be notified of such situations, simply enable the alarm for that advisory or watch. It may take a minute to understand how to enable/disable that feature, but once you figure it, it's not that difficult. And Midland has customer service available to assist.

I can't say enough about this radio and the value of knowing your family can sleep safely is priceless. I'm thankful that such a quality product is really quite inexpensive.

Customer Review: Midland WR-300 has "hot" sensitivity, excellant reception.
Summary: 5 Stars

The radio has a specified sensitivity of 0.5 microvolts. It is a radio
with very hot reception on the weather channels. Works flawlessly.
The alpha-numeric readouts on the display will give you the TYPE of
ALERT... and the time that alert will EXPIRE.
The top line: Displays the TYPE of Alert. Will scroll if necessary.
The ACTUAL DATA on the alert is not displayed... that is what the
audio broadcast does.
The 2nd line: Time when the alert EXPIRES.
My radio ALERTS me every wednesday at noon of the Weekly Test.
The purpose is to inform you that the radio is on guard and
properly working. And it works great!
You can add later in the far future, up to five more additional
TYPES of alerts... the blank slots are there in the memory.
Once programmed, it is extremely simple to use. It will even
work normally during power outages, due to the battery backup.
A very important tool to protect yourself and your family during
a hazardous event. I do not consider this a 'another radio' but
as a potential livesaver instead. Very important.
For a tank of gas for your car, you can perhaps save your entire
family... not funny. Am glad i have one now. I can sleep soundly
during rough weather. Download the manual and read the specs.
Thanks Midland for a very professional 'consumer' radio.
The professionalism of Midland should be applauded.

Customer Review: Best purchase I've ever made
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this weather radio last year after having so much flooding in Texas. We did not realize we live in a flood zone until we've had all the rain/flooding the past 2 yrs. Our house backs up to a greenbelt that has a small creek running through it. We are up a hill and sit about 25 feet higher than the creek. There were many times last year (in the middle of the night) we ended up having lake front property with the water rising with in about 1-2 feet of flowing into our back yard. The first time it happened we did not have a weather radio and our neighbor who has better eye-line from inside their house called to tell us (as she was watching beavers float by). Our green belt was just ravaged by the raging water, and just a mile down the creek a child drown in it.

It seems the tornado and floor warning always happen late at night when your not watching TV (and in most cases alseep in bed). So myself (and my neighbor) purchased the Midland WR-300 weather radio and I put it on my night stand. I love that I can program the areas and the kind of warnings I want to get. It has given us piece of mind and is worth the occassional jolt out of bed. :)

On a side note, I do not use this as my alarm clock, since I already had one. I simply us it for weather alerts and to check the local weather anytime. I think this is a must have purchase for every home!
