Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000 - BlackCustomer Review: All it Does is Exactly What It's Advertised to Do Summary: 5 Stars
Because it hasn't been that long ago, I well remember my first wireless mouse. It sucked, actually, requiring the installation of its own software and moving the pointer on the monitor in a herky-jerky fashion when it moved it at all.
My how things have changed. The antenna stows in the base of this little gem, and all you have to do is un-stow it; plug it into a USB port on your computer and mouse away. It "works" perfectly right out of the box. Notice, I said "computer" and not "laptop." Though I bought mine to use with my Dell Inspiron mini, there's no reason this device would not be just as welcome and useful on a desktop. In fact, if I didn't already have wireless mouses on my home and office desktops, I'd be ordering this little jewel for them.
The ease of setup - actually, there is no setup - of this product offers a convenient platform from which to make a point about the world of computers. It should not be remarkable that putting this particular product into use is so easy, but rather that putting most of the gear the "geniuses" in the computer industry develop for us is so damned tough. I've read the statement somewhere that by now, computer consumer products should work like toasters...put the bread in, push the handle and a minute later, take out the toast. But they don't work like that, do they? No, adding a new anything...especially a program...to an existng piece of hardware, you'd better be prepared to spend a couple of hours, if you don't finally have to call in a professional to get it going.
I'm probably showing my age, but whenever I hear a young person gush about the wonders of the digital age, I think, yeah, if they're so darned smart, why can't they make it easy and convenient to put it into use. As I pilot, I'm quite convinced that one day, we'll look back on the equipment that so many are technically and socially enchanted by and realize that in this age, data processing hardware is about where airplanes were when we made them out of sticks and cloth.
So there.
