Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Sidewinder X6 Gaming Keyboard with USB Port

Customer Review: Not just for gaming, works well with LInux
Summary: 5 Stars

My whole gaming interest and experience consists of an occasional game of solitaire when I'm really bored, yet I love this keyboard. Why? For starters, I'm left-handed, and this keyboard allows me to move the numerical keypad over to the left side of the main keyboard, where I can actually use it. Secondly, I often work into the wee hours in a dimly lit home office, and the illuminated keyboard makes this a joy. These two things alone would be enough to sell me on this keyboard, but wait, there's more.

I run Linux as my primary operating system, and surprisingly (considering it's a Microsoft product), the keyboard works quite well with Debian Linux without any configuration; just plug it in. The volume control knob, mute button and backlight dimmer are fully functional. Hit the calculator button and the Gnome calculator pops up. The pause, fast-fwd and rewind buttons work with media players.

The keyboard is solidly built and has a comfortable palm rest. Key action is quiet (but not silent), and comfortable.

I have been using this keyboard for several months and am totally satisfied with it.

Customer Review: Absolutely Fantastic keyboard
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros:
-Very nice clicky-feel. This is important for a keyboard.
-Buttons work
-Calculator key was the key I never new I'd fall in love with. It's also excellently placed
-Volume knob instead of button. YES.
-Macros. Macros I don't use, but still, macros.

Cons:
-The escape key is wrong. I keep hitting the first macro key or F1.
-Magnets keep the numpad attached. I hear tell that this can interfere with some nearby mice - presumably they have to be close, but who keeps their mouse far away from their keyboard? Me, apparently, because I have no issues.
-That said, I really don't see why you'd want to move the numpad.
-Lights aren't changeable. This sucks, because most of my peripherals have lights on them - and they're all unchangeable blue. Good thing I don't really care all that much, really.

If you're having concerns about feel, stop. This keyboard feels lovely, and if you cared that much, go with a Das. What, don't want to spend $130? Then quit whining.

Customer Review: Removeable numpad, best feel
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the X6 to be my new home keyboard. My old G15 resides at work and I don't feel like lugging that thing back and forth each day. I like my G15, but I like the X6 even better.

The first thing that attracted me to the KB was the removeable/configureable numeric keypad. I rarely use it, and it just takes up space on my desktop or in my KB tray. The smaller size also makes it easier to transport. I will tuck this KB into my laptop backpack and it zippers up. Most keyboards with a numpad are just too long for this.

After using the X6 for a few hours, i've come to the conclusion that it has the best tactile feel of any keyboard i've owned. It is so 'right' for my typing that I often find myself looking at a completed sentence before I even know what i'm going to write. That's right, it feels like it is reading my mind!

The red dimmable backlighting is another feature that appeals to my sense of style and aethetics.

Customer Review: A very nice keyboard
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't research this keyboard at all before I bought it, really. I was pre-ordering the new Microsoft Sidewinder X8 mouse, so I went ahead and just stuck this keyboard in with it. If you've got zero expectations, you've got nothing to lose, right? ;)
Well, the keyboard turned out to be pretty awesome indeed. So far I've not found anything that I personally don't like about it. You can adjust your Windows volume and Backlight intensity with Dials at the top-right of the keyboard. Pretty classy. The keys feel very good, there's a Calculator shortcut key (Something I used a ton on my old keyboard. Glad this has one also!), and the removable numberpad is pretty cool. It's held in place with strong magnets and you can pretty much just pick it up and drop it into place like it didn't even have to connect to anything. All in all, I would highly recommend this keyboard!
Now I just have to wait for the Über mouse. :)

Customer Review: Great Board!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros:
Great sleek look. Keys feel just right when typing (not clunky or loud). The option of moving the number pad to the right or left is great.
Macros work great when setup. Volume and color brightness controls work awesome. Everything works as it should.
Perfect for gaming.

Cons:
The red back-light color is o.k., but for me I would have preferred a blue or white. The hand rest pad at the bottom of the keyboard is a little wide - comes close to overlapping the front edge of my keyboard pull-out tray. Macros and some other special keys take some time to get setup. (these are just my opinions and personal preferences)

Other:
All-in-all this is a pretty sweet board and well worth the money. If you are looking for a new keyboard, definitely give this one a try, you won't be disappointed (unless you are extremely anal about these kinds of things)
