Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick

Customer Review: It does work on XP
Summary: 4 Stars

Just got hold of a second hand Precision Pro 2, and tried to install the sidewinder software...guess what it doesn't load on XP.
All you need to do is plug the jostick in and it works just fine with no drivers. You can't use the sidewinder software, but you don't need it. My advice just Plug 'n' Play no worries :o)
I mainly use this joystick with Microsoft's Flight Sim and it's fantastic, very smooth.

Customer Review: uh-hu...
Summary: 4 Stars

dont know why all those people had problems installing it... concidering all i did was plug it in, XP said new hardware detected, and 10 seconds later it said new hardware installed ^_^ that was it... set to go. There werent really any problems with it, maybe the 2 hands on a joystick sux, but it still performs well.

Customer Review: Good Device
Summary: 4 Stars

For a basic joystick with all the options, that work, this one is for you.

Customer Review: Great product with one major flaw
Summary: 3 Stars

The flaw is that this joystick will occasionally not work (at all). Reportedly a charge of static electricity builds up and prevents the stick from being recognized by the computer. When this happens, unplugging the joystick for a few hours seems to fix the problem (until the next time). This Sidewinder is the middle of the line model and supposedly the only one with a metal base. The other two models (including the one with force feedback) reputedly do not suffer from this problem.

When it works, it is a pleasure to use. The software offers a great deal of configurability for each of the buttons and for the stick's "dead zone". Controlling the yaw/pitch/roll movements is very smooth and accurate. The throttle control can be awkward to use (especially if you like to keep the joystick to your right, as it will probably require use of the left hand), but that is common for many of the other joysticks in this class.

Left handed players will want to look elsewhere, as the handle is molded to fit the right hand.

For an alternative in the same class that is a little bit cheaper and ranked a tad higher, look at the Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold. Those interested in separate joystick and throttle controls might look at the Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner or the Saitek X36 or X45 control systems.

Customer Review: Static Issues!!!
Summary: 3 Stars

The product is good for the price, but it's got some really frustrating issues that only MS tech support knows about, but I wanted to let you all know. I called tech support 'cause I wanted to return what I thought was a POS. When I talked to Evan, he told me that the metal base causes some static issues. He suggested that you place it on something anti-static like a mousepad. (I am gonna try an anti-static bag like you get when you buy computer hardware) If your computer stops recognizing it, unplug it. Shut your computer down, and plug it in and unplug it a few times while the computer is off. Then restart your computer with it plugged in. That should release the static charge.
