Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft SideWinder Gaming Mouse

Customer Review: Excellent gaming mouse for claw-grippers
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned the Logitech G500 and Razer Deathadder, as well as many other non-gaming mice, and this is my favorite out of them all; primarily because of the Sidewinder Mouse's larger frame. It takes a bit of adjusting to the grip style, but the larger contact area is excellent for using your fingertips to make small, accurate shifts. I use 10g of mass and the white feet for a very light, slick mouse that is easy to move and stays stable on the pad.

The primary buttons are solid and the long "paddles" give it a totally natural click feeling with a consistent force. I strongly prefer the over/under side buttons as opposed to the fore/aft buttons most mice have, but their click isn't as nice as the G500 or Deathadder. The metal mouse wheel feels great compared to other plastic or rubber wheels, but the edges can be a bit sharp.

I've only had two problems with it: First, the original and the replacement have had their middle buttons stop working after about a year, prompting me to have this one replaced with a Sidewinder X5 in the hopes that it uses a different button. Second, the side buttons can get rather dirty, with the silver paint flecking off a bit and the edges collecting dead skin. I usually stop and wipe it off with a paper towel every week or so, but it's noticeable after you've used it for a while.

Customer Review: A well-made mouse.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this mouse because my old wireless one died and I needed a new one that could handle the abuse of several gamers using it. Overall, I am quite satisfied with it. The only problem I encountered was that it doesn't come with the software drivers to use it, but requires you to download them. When I tried, I got an error message everytime I tried to install them. This has kept me from being able to reprogram the buttons, however, since the two side buttons come pre-programmed to Back and Forwards I haven't had too much trouble with it.

The sensitivity adjustment is very useful. I tend to just use one, but other members of my family use the others. Also, the adjustable weight, while not something I felt I needed, is a nice touch.

Finally, I haven't had any problems using the feet on my mouse pad. In fact, I haven't even tried the other two sets that came with it. They sit in the cord/weight/feet holder, which is another nice touch.

All in all, I'd probably give this mouse a 4.5 for not being able to dowload the software to truly use its full potential, but it's good enough in other ways to merit a 5.

Customer Review: My review after 2 year of use.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Sidewinder for ~2 years and I can affirmatively say it's the best overall gaming mouse I've used in my 10+ years of gaming.

Precision: Having owned several other gaming mouses (MX518, older Razer, etc.) I can say this mouse is on par with other high quality gaming mouses.

Comfort: Size is perfect for my hand. I can play all day without strain or pressure points.

Durability: No issues with laser, buttons or sw after 2 years of use/abuse. I use this as an every day mouse also, and it still works like new.

Features: For me, the best feature is the thumb buttons. The two buttons are perfect for programming moves that require combo buttons or double-taps. Record macros on the fly. The cord manager and spare weights storage block is a nice feature.

My only gripe is the scroll wheel. It has nice heft but I wish it had more notch-y response when scrolling.

Overall, very satisfied customer. I should buy another before it gets discontinued.

Customer Review: Mouse Replacement - Updated
Summary: 5 Stars

I have gone through a lot of mice in my time.... I consider myself to be a 'gamer'. I find the majority of mice tend to wear out very quickly. Usually well w/in the Warranty period, but I tend to not want to go through the hassel of talking to customer service & paying shipping... just to replace a product that did not live up to what they advertised. This mouse however, I have had no problems w/for the time I have been using it. 'IF' it does wear out... this is probably one of the only ones I would go through that hassel to actually replace it.

***Update After More Use***
1. Hardware Failure - No longer recognizes when the scrollwheel is pressed down (Turning the wheel still works in both directions).
2. The mouse has issues w/precision, and will move erratically when using minimal movement. This could be due to the surface it's being used on, but I have tried SEVERAL different "types" of mousepads (IE: Cloth, Plastic, Rubber, Hybrids, etc).

Customer Review: Few Features, But a Wonderfull Mouse!
Summary: 5 Stars

I usually hate anything Microsoft, but this mouse is the exception!
The buttons to change the resolution proved to be very useful both in games, and many other instances. I only play games a little bit, but I do work on a computer all day long, and the multiple resolution buttons have been way more usefull than I ever thought they would. I also like the shape and size. I have large hands, and very long fingers. I also have a Logitech MX revolution, and believe it or not, this microsoft mouse is much more comfortable to me... it is the only mouse I can use all day long without my hands hurting. I'm sure this is a very individual experience, it depends on your hands.... but I love it. The replacement pads for the bottom of the mouse are nice, too if you don't lose them.
