Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad USB

Customer Review: Absolutely what I expected.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this controller at a wal mart about a year back (roughly) And it's been pretty good for the $15 I paid for it. Now that it's showing its age, the down button doesn't work so well, but I didn't expect it to last forever. Worth $15, but not much more.

Customer Review: D-Pad is not aligned properly
Summary: 1 Stars

I've noticed that other 2D-fighter fans have already complained that this controller provides very poor control, but they may have misdiagnosed the cause.

The buttons on the right side are not placed straight, they are on a 45 degree or so angle because your thumb also point in a similar angle when holding the controller. This makes your thumb relatively perpendicular with the buttons. Good design. The problem is that they forgot to do that on the other side with the D-pad. The D-pad is positioned straight up, not slanted like the face buttons. This renders the D-pad utterly useless in game which require you to use the D-pad quickly in a specific sequence, such as in fighting games. The result is that the Up-right groove feels like it should be the Up button, and the Left-Down groove feels like it should be the Down button. The thing that baffles me even more is that the cheaper Sidewinder with fewer buttons has the D-pad aligned correctly and works great. Go figure.

No matter how I try I cannot get my thumb to align properly and confortably with the D-pad.

Customer Review: A controller without a D-pad!
Summary: 1 Stars

Don't take the "5 stars rating" reviews in such consideration, because their owners don't seem to play many diferent type of games. It's directional pad is a COMPLETE JUNK. If you have emulators on your computer, like M.A.M.E, and usually play fighting games (Street Fighter, KOF etc...), FORGET it.
It is also NOT recommended to play any other emulator games. PC games are also a hard task to do.

Why?
Simply because the D-pad doesn't work. It's almost IMPOSSIBLE to make the moves work well.
The one star I gave goes to all the rest (I mean the buttons and the design).

Stay away from any gamepad from MS. They are the worst choice.

Customer Review: Horrible D-pad ruins a otherwise decent controller
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a decent controller,it feels comfortable and nice button arrangement. But the D-pad is all wrong. It's fine for raceing,3d games and side-scrolling fighters.

But when it comes to games like street fighter II or other 1-on-1 fighters in general where precise motions are needed to perform the special moves, the D-pad is horrible. No matter what i just can't seem to pull off such special moves with this D-pad.So i'm reduced to mere punches&kicks when playing such fighters like street fighter II.

Overall although a bit overpriced, this would be a nice controller but the bad d-pad ruins it.

Customer Review: Has a major problem
Summary: 1 Stars

The sidewinder controller just so happenes to be my favorite controller. Although I liek it because of how it can be used, there is a major defect with them. I warn you I went through 3 of these controllers and all of them broke within 6 months. The controller out of no where will start glitching and USB will not recognize its even plugged in. It will connect and disconnect about every other second.

Although the controller is nice to use, because of its durability I rate it 1 star. Unless you don't mind replacing your controller every 6 months, than I will reccomend it.
