Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Habu Laser Gaming Mouse (Black)Customer Review: Best gaming mouse, period. Summary: 4 Stars
I am editing this review because the mouse really is that good, I bought another one, and I'm still extremely impressed.
Best mousing experience I've had.
I want to change my review to 5 stars...but Amazon won't let me.
I know some of the reviews here don't seem that great.
But let me tell you, the Habu is the best mouse you can possibly buy today.
The latest revisions have fixed all the software problems, and all the hardware problems.
You just have to upgrade the firmware, and use the drivers off of the internet.
7 buttons, all work wonderfully, and all are FULLY PROGRAMMABLE unlike Sidewinders. You can assign macros and media functions, unlike G5/G9's.
And since there's two buttons under the scroll wheel, you don't have to sacrifice any of your main 5 buttons (again, sidewinders, Intellimice, DeathAdder)
It's got a 2nd gen laser sensor, so it tracks better than the Copperhead and original G5 (the G5 2007 uses the same laser as the Habu)
You can't go wrong with this mouse.
Anyone who gets it will thank me for this review.
It's shape and comfort are of the same exact shape and comfort in the following mice.
Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (virtually the same shape)
DeathAdder (almost the same shape)
G5/G9/Sidewinder/MX518 (mostly the same shape)
Habu also looks the best out of all these mice, except possibly the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
You can't go wrong with a Habu, so if someone's telling you that they're awesome.
It's because they are awesome.
Customer Review: Could be a good alternative... Summary: 4 Stars
I've been a huge fan of Razer's gaming mice for a while now (they are far more sensitive than any other mouse that I've tried and fit my hand perfectly.) but while Razer's laser technology is second to none, their hardware tends to not hold up as well to constant wear and tear. I've owned two Diamondbacks and a Copperhead, and all three developed hardware issues in a relatively short period of time (with a year of purchase)
When I read that Microsoft and Razer had a joint venture in the Habu, I figured it'd be worth a try. So far it appears to be a solid combination.
The mouse is slightly larger than either the Diamondback or Copperhead. The buttons so far feel sturdier than Razer's typical mice. The cable appears to be sturdier as well. The sensitivity is easily on par with the Diamondback. I'd say it's marginally less sensitive than the Copperhead, but unless you're a hardcore FPS gamer, I'd say the difference is minimal. Rather than having two buttons on either side of the mouse, the thumb-side has two buttons, with the two additional buttons being placed in an indent directly behind the scroll wheel. The thumbside buttons come on a removable plate and can be replaced with larger buttons (this second plate is included, as are extra rubber feet for the bottom of the mouse)
I downloaded the latest software and firmware directly from Razer's website, and had absolutely no problems with installation or use on Windows XP. Only time will tell if the mouse holds up to wear and tear, but I have high hopes.
Customer Review: Solid Product Summary: 4 Stars
First, the retailer offering this mouse through Amazon was VERY prompt. Free shipping and the mouse was here within three days which included a weekend! Props to Amazon and their network of retailers.
I own 2x Razer Copperhead mice, 1x Razer Diamondback, 1x Logitech G5, 1x Microsoft Intelli Explorer 3.0... and a few others. Of all these mice, IMO the Intelli Explorer 3.0 is THE MOST comfortable. I haven't been using it for the past 2 years because of the low DPI. In a dual screen work config, the high dpi laser mice allow for fast mouse movement with little hand movement.
Enter the Habu. The Habu is close to the Intelli Explorer 3.0 with the speed of the copperhead. Although it's not quite as comfortable, it's much much much better than the G5, and a little better than the copperhead.
The Habu offers fast mouse speeds and good comfort while not requiring a wrist pad. Solid mouse at a very attractive price.
BTW. Over a 2 year period I've had 1x Razer and the G5 die. Both companies offered a replacement HOWEVER both required I return the mouse to them for replacement. The one Microsoft item that failed, a sidewinder joystick, was replaced WITHOUT me sending it back to Microsoft. Microsoft's customer care, in my experience, is second to absolutely no one. If you purchase Microsoft's retail products you can expect a level of customer service usually only found in fairy tales. This truth is not said often enough.
Customer Review: Good Mouse - Long Term Review Summary: 4 Stars
The Habu mouse is a very slick looking, and comfortable feeling mouse to use. I bought it as part of a set, along with the Reclusa Keyboard and the two looked well together.
I didn't have any of the firmware issues mentioned by other reviewers, thanks to research I made on the product before I bought it. Overall, I would've given the Habu 5 stars since I was very happy with it, however after a little over a year it died unexpectedly. One day without reason, in the middle of use its lights flashed on and off, and I would get the sound of a USB device unplugging then replugging. Over the course of 3 days I tried different USB ports, reinstalling the software and firmware but none was successful in getting the mouse back to normal.
All in all a good mouse, I could use it for long periods of time without discomfort, and the response time and handling characteristics were great. The suddenness of it failing on me without warning is somewhat disconcerting, but I don't think that's enough to really give it a bad score.
Pros
-Comfortable.
-Adjustable dpi on the fly.
-Teflon pads allow quick smooth movements.
-Decorative lighting can be turned on/off.
Cons
-Clicking of LMB and RMB kind of loud.
-Possible firmware installation issues.
-Possible durability issues.
Customer Review: Fantastic Mouse Summary: 4 Stars
One of my cardinal rules for setting up input peripherals is: "Install it, then download drivers off the web". If you do this, the mouse will install perfectly. My advice is ignore MS's paranoid warnings about installing software first, because the mouse will work regardless. Use Windows Update and the drivers will update to what's unnecessary for you.
In terms of the form factor of the mouse, it feels very natural in my hand. The on the fly resolution switching is a little funky, and of little use in a real-world sense, but it's certainly handy in gaming and graphics situations. The buttons click firmly and loudly for solid feedback. The rubberized surface of the mouse also feels very nice. One problem I ran into with my Logitech mice is dirt collecting on the surface for a lovely grime that collects over time. I'll see how this mouse handles multiple grubby hands over time.
My -1 star is for the deceptive image for the mouse. The blue light around the rim is not as clean and consistent as the marketing photo would have you believe. It is actually broken up quite regularly by the plastic clips that hold the mouse together, and therefore make a spotty line. It looks a bit cheap.
Thumbs up from me for this mouse, I highly recommend it (from a longtime Logitech user).
