Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000Customer Review: Professional and Smartly Designed Summary: 5 Stars
From the moment you take it out of the box, you know that this was made by professionals who knew their stuff. It's firm, solid, and balanced. The key resistance is moderate, but you know if you've selected the key without looking at the screen.
The layout is superb. The "extra" keys are lined up on the outside columns without much fuss and allow for the comparatively narrow overall width compared to regular keyboards. This is handled by making the calculator a separately attachable piece of the keyboard. Secondly, this is accomplished by using the Fn key in blue in combination with the most important keys in the Insert/delete/Home/End,Page Up/Page Down area of regular keyboards. It works...despite the naysayers in these reviews.
It works because it allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard, even for those Home and End keys. It has the elegance of the Lenovo mouse button. Both allow for combined key functions WITHOUT MOVING YOUR HANDS. The Fn key is moved over to the right by the Control and Alt buttons, and the Home/End/Page Up keys, etc are lined up in a column on the right. Those keys are now reachable with your right index or middle or little fingers while holding down the Fn button with your right thumb. You don't have to move your hands off the keyboard. You don't have to use two hands to get two keys at once. You don't have to reach over off the keyboard and select the Home End buttons like you did on regular keyboards. It's an elegant solution to save space to keep the keyboard width down.
(For some this will sound familiar, and they have used IBM/Lenovo laptops which have a very similar elegance in the engineering of the Mouse Button which allows for moving the mouse with the index finger and then selecting with the thumb without moving your hand at all.)
There's more, but I'm concerned that people avoid this excellent portable keyboard because of the naysayers here who didn't understand who to use the Fn and Home/End functions.
A minor complaint of mine would be the relatively flat keyboard. The ergonomic quality of this keyboard is not as strongly stated as other Microsoft Ergonomic keyboards but the main issue, separating out the angle of the keys is here, and probably the most important aspect, as tilt can be adjusted in other ways.
I love this keyboard.
Therapeutic Effect of this Keyboard Layout on Carpal Tunnel patients:
By the way this is one of very few keyboards which addresses the problems of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome typists. The key to protecting damaged wrists is to keep the wrists straight. That's why Carpal Tunnel patients use wrist braces, to keep the wrist straight and flat.
That's why key-shelves were developed down from the table top, so the wrist and forearm can be parallel to the ground, i.e. with wrists straight. Mice and wide keyboard are trouble for Carpal Tunnel because the wrist has to be twisted to the left to get it facing forward, toward the monitor. The extra keys (Home, End etc) and the calculator force a reach to the right off the keyboard that Carpal Tunnel patients shouldn't be doing, and they suffer pain if they do. So a narrower keyboard with the keys spread out in a fan, allow for straight wrist typing. This keyboard should be prescribed by Orthopedic Surgeons and Physical Therapists for Carpal Tunnel patients.
It works great for the rest of us too.
