Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft A16-00029 SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel and Pedals SetCustomer Review: Works good for a 10 year old wheel Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this wheel used, and so far have been pretty impressed with it. Sure it isn't perfect but for 35 bucks its one of the cheapest wheels you can still find on the market. It works with windows 7, although its mostly just the base features, which is alright to me.
The version I got is all black, which is just fine. The force feedback doesn't really work but that is because the software that was designed to control it was designed 10 years ago and may not work on newer OSs. However even with the lack of force feedback it still feels relatively sturdy. the clamp which is supposed to hold it to the desk is not horribly well designed but if you hold the wheel right it shouldn't pose to big of an issue.
The buttons are in good spots with 6 on the front allowing for multiple uses, in rFactor I use them for a myriad of things including the pit speed limiter. What the picture doesn't show, is that it has two buttons on the back of the wheel which allow you to use them as paddle shifters like in F1 and Inycar, so the lack of a shifter knob isn't always a bad thing.
It has somewhat of a deadzone that takes some time getting used to but it isn't hugely noticeable to me. Its powercord for the force feedback is short so you'll have to use an extension cord if you are not very close to an outlet. The nice thing is the cable that connects the peddals to the steering wheel looks like a phone cable so if it gets damaged you may be able to substitute a standard phone cable in its place.
The pedal stand is wide and is sturdy, although it may slip on anything but carpet. The pedals feel pretty sturdy but have a bit of a deadzone which can make it hard to have light acceleration/braking in the game you are playing.
Overall it is a pretty good wheel if your not looking for super advanced features and just want a simple wheel to play your favorite raving games. It doesn't seem to need drivers as Windows 7 simply downloaded them from the internet for me and it worked immediately. It is one of the better cheap wheels out there considering on how expensive many of the good wheels are today.
I'd recommend it to simracers who are on a tight budget, or just casual racers who want a steering wheel they don't want to spend a fortune on.
