I'm an engineer and if you're a techie like me, you need the Vera if you want home automation.
The investment on this little wonder box will continue to pay off as you understand how flexible, well supported, expandable, low-power consuming, ever growing list of supported devices this thing has.
The folks at Micasaverde are dedicated to their support, their forum is flush with people in the middle of learning z-wave, teaching each other, and solving each other's home automation problems.
At the same time, if you're NOT interested in geeky tinkering, this box still gives really good web administration tools that will make the process very easy. So don't be afraid.
Seriously, if you consider the ongoing charges for services like the Schlage or Hawking solutions the Vera is CHEAP.

Vera can slash your energy bill by 1/3 by making sure your lights, appliances, and heating/cooling systems are on only when needed. Home control software for the PC computer is complicated and requires you to leave your computer on all the time using up to 200 watts of electricity. But Vera uses only 6 watts and is very simple.
