Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TVisto Series 3.5'' Multimedia External Hard Drive Enclosure

Customer Review: Good idea, mediocre implementation
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought this device (from another vendor) about a year ago as it was hitting the market. It does what it says it does when I get it to work which is sometimes difficult. First unit had the internal ribbon that connects the controls to the HD broken, so the device needed replacement on my dime. The new one works OK but if turned off by the remote, it ALWAYS hangs up requiring a power reset or even total unplugging before it will play again. Also firmware is NOT upgradable from TVisto since the unit is a Galaxy branded unit and the Firmware is only good for Macpower units (it says so in the fine print on the web site). So, after unsuccessfully trying to upgrade the firmawre several times I noticed this and they are now on version 2+ and mine has version 1.4.10 and I can't upgrade and I an not able to find a Web site for Galaxy that has the firmware; what a bummer. To add insult to injury I have a Harmony Logitech remote and the GaLaxy remote is not on the list and it has proven impossible (for me at least) to manually program it using the learn mode. Also, the Galaxy remote lay out is not as intuitive as it could have been (e.g, push home to save settings). In addition if you notice, the component video cable has just been made available for about $38.00 on some sites although it was listed all along as included in the equipment but was actually not part of the device I recieved. To get the RGB cable I needed to go to Europe. Finally verdict, too much money (although I paid even more than the currnet going price) for not-so-polished unit with primitive non-upgradeable AV interface to which you yet need to add a HD drive. I started rating this unit as a 2 star but it does not metit this, one is enough since there is nothing lower than that.

Customer Review: Bringing up the Rear...
Summary: 1 Stars

I have purchased this product, as well as, the Mvix and Tvix and this product does not compare.

Cons:
* The A/V cables and power cord are specifically designed for the TVisto and they are cheaply made, so if they are damaged, as with mine, you cannot purchase A/V cables off the open market.
* The media folders have to be specifically organized for the TVisto or the device will not recognize the files or folders.
* Unlike the Mvix and Tvix, the TVisto does not have an internal fan, so the hard drive gets extremely hot.
* The Mvix and Tvix have easy access compartment for the hard drive, which does not require the removal of screws. The TVisto requires the screws be removed.
* To be such an inferior product, I would have expected the price to be at least half the cost of the Mvix and Tvix.

Pros:
* Uuuhhh, it has a nice remote.

The Mvix is the best.

Customer Review: Divx 6.x not compatible
Summary: 1 Stars

most of these multimediaplayer harddrives are NOT compatible with the Divx 6.x standards out there for about a year now, and as well NOT compatible with the new quicktime 4 format also used by most pros out there.
in contradiction to what they advertise for ....

but these items are usually "ONLY" compatible with older Divx version up to 5.x, which needless to say, NO ONE uses any more for a year now.

so dont be surprised if your downloaded avi or divx or mov movies from the internet just will not play, and also dont be suprised if customer service is not reachable , and if it is, then they will only very reluctantly admit to the lack of compatibility of their players.

if you are not sure, call the manufacturers guys, ask them about this, and let them know what we consumers need...

Customer Review: Galaxy TVisto Review
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this unit. Sets up easily but you could only turn it off or on with the power button in the rear and the remote would not work. The internal ribbon was broken. They were very nice and i returned it ( on my dime) When I recived the new one the very same thing happened to it. Again I returned it (on my dime again)They were very nice and gave me credit but as much as I thought this would be very useful, I did not get another one. I will try to get a MacArthur Tvisto if I can and try that.
