Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)Customer Review: Worthy for the cost Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, Verbatim may produce copies less prone to errors but for $35 for a 50 pack I figured I'd give Memorex a try. I copy at 4x speed on my DL DVD+R [RITEK-S04-42] factory installed drive on my cheapie $500 Dell computer that was purchased back in 2007. I haven't got a coaster yet and have made over 50 DVDs so far. The only errors I get are during playback and the errors seem to be dependent on the DVD player. I usually don't have problems playing back on my computer or PS3. The cheaper DVD players will yield playback problems on some of the DVDs. However, I had the same issue on a few of my Verbatim DVDs. To avoid coasters, you should probably slow down the copy rate and make sure your firmware is updated. Also, don't do anything in the background while a DVD is being duplicated because your computer needs all it's memory to burn the DVD.
Customer Review: Satisfied, great value! Summary: 5 Stars
I am happy with this purchase, so far I have used about 25 of these disks with one failure which could have been avoided. Prior to this purchase I only used Verbatim dual layer media, but due to recent quality control issues I have decided to try something new.
Prior to using this media I upgraded the firmware on my DVD burners where applicable. The one failure I have had was with my old NEC drive (NEC ND-3500AG). Since this failure I have used only my newer drive to burn these disks (Optiarc AD-7191A).
I am very satisfied with the quality of this media. Best of all this media is far cheaper than what I have used in the past, a welcome change. I would recommend this media.
For those who are interested the media I received has the following Disc ID: RITEK-S04-66
Customer Review: Hit Or Miss Summary: 5 Stars
These discs seem to be very hit-or-miss depending on your equipment. A buddy of mine tried three different spindles purchased from different stores - burning them using different software, on two different computers, even at different burn speeds - and every single one of them failed. I then decided to try my luck and - using the same software, burning the same ISOs he tried, at full speed - I went through a whole 50-pack without a single failure.
Based on my own personal experience with these discs, I would give them five stars. However I lowered it to three because of the fact that something about them does not work with certain burners.
Before you invest in such a large spindle of these discs, I would suggest purchasing a single disc or 5-pack to test on your setup.
Customer Review: VERY CHEAP, VERY NICE! Summary: 5 Stars
You guys that are having problems are obviously burning the discs wrong. I have bought two 50 disc spindles of memorex and my previous spindle had 100% success. NO COASTERS! Tried out the first two discs on my second spindle and they were burned with 100% success as well! If you are going to burn a dual layer disc, please have some common knowledge on how to burn before you start. For people who are having problems, you need to either get a new burner, or set the write speed to something like 4x or 6x. ALWAYS BURN AT LOW SPEED! NEVER HIGHEST! If you know how to burn discs and you need a cheap way out, this is definitely the cheapest buy. I will comment tho, that these do scratch easily on my part. Maybe its just me, but be careful and protect your discs by putting them in a case.
Customer Review: Good value, just keep it at 4x or less Summary: 5 Stars
Compared to Verbatim 2.4 DL disks, these are much more reliable. I use a LiteOn SATA burner and keep it at 4x and have no problems. I do dislike the label surface as it has little stars on it, but no biggie, just write right over them. Given the price, these are the best deal going.
Update: 6 September 2009
A few hundred disks later, these are still a good value and I haven't had a coaster since I adopted 4x as my burn speed. I have tried these on all three of my computers, a macbook and two Liteon drives, and they work on all three. I presume problems are from people trying to burn faster than 4x, but it's certainly possible that some defective ones were sent out. The packaging changed recently and I haven't tried any of the new ones.
