Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)Customer Review: 8x does not mean your computer can burn 8x Summary: 5 Stars
I have recently bought these Dual Layer DVD+R 8x Memorex from best buy and I highly recommend them. They are no different from verbatim which to buy I spent $20 on for a 5 pack. I bought them after having read these reviews just to prove they work fine. The main problem with the other review are the people are actually trying to burn data at 8x speeds which they are doing because it says 8x on the case, I do blame memorex and even verbatim for not warning users but not all computers can burn at 8x speeds. I found this out the hard way when I tried to burn Verbatim and Memorex at 8x, then I found a forum online that told me to slow them down to 4x or 2.4x and both Memorex and Verbatim disks worked perfectly.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MEMOREX MAINLY FOR PRICE AND QUALITY.
If you have patience, burn the data at 2.4x it will take around 30 mins but I promise you it will work. Without any errors and I recommend that you go find a good burner off the web that will allow you to burn at 2.4x and that will verify the disk for you that makes sure there are no errors.
If you have any issues with finding a program or with disks either Memorex or Verbatim, please, drop me an email at Flare66@gmail.com .
Customer Review: Every great deal has it's small catches... Summary: 5 Stars
Price (5 out of 5)
I have bought a LOT of blanks dvd's in my time - TDK, Philips, Sony, Verbatim, and even Dynex - I have tried them all. Since I have literally burn through over 1,000 dvd's in the past 3 years I always look for the best deal for good quality dvd-r's. For me, Memorex has always been the least expensive on a consistent basis. I got my dvd-dl 50pk here for $28 and free shipping in May 2010. Other brands usually cost between $25 and $35 for a 25 pack!
Quality (4 out of 5 for false advertising)
I think Memorex's only problem is that these disks are advertised as 8x. They're not. They almost always mess up on 8x speed. I always use 2.4x just to be safe although 4x may work. So far no duds on the 2 packages I bought (the newest from Fry's). EXCEPT for that first disk burned on 8x. (I use Nero 8 to burn everything.) It's worth the deal if you don't mind paying the price of slower burning for really cheap disks.
Design (4 out of 5)
I love that the disks are white and the memorex logo is unobtrusive.
Small con - the new stupid packaging. If you aren't careful screwing the top on all the way the top falls off and so do your disks if you're lazy like me.
Customer Review: No problems with burning issues Summary: 5 Stars
I make and edit DVDs and burn to these. I have never had a problem with having to toss a disc because I couldn't burn to it (EXCEPTION- I did have one disc in an older pack from a previous order) that the double layers came apart. It squeaked when slightly flexed and I didn't attempt to use.)
My last order of five spindles (250 discs) I have had no issues with the first 150 discs. I am not expecting problems with the remaining 100 discs either. I use these for my business and cannot afford to have disc burning issues. I have been happy with this purchase. I just keep waiting for prices to drop on the DL discs.
If you experience problems, or before you order, ENSURE you hardware supports these discs. Ensure your driver is up to date.
UPDATE September 2010
I continue to purchase Memorex discs exclusively and have not had any burn failures. Have purchased from multiple sources and continue to have outstanding results. However, my computer uses SATA DVD burners. Possibly the hardware makes a difference?
Customer Review: Works great on Intel Dual Core iMac running OS 10.4.11 Summary: 5 Stars
I've burned about a dozen of these so far, with 100% success rate, using the built-in Superdrive on my Intel Dual Core iMac, with Toast Titanium 8.0.3 as the burn program.
One word of warning, though... if you plan to use these for extended play or higher definition DVDs, be aware that NOT ALL DVD PLAYERS recognize them. We have two DVD players in our house, both from Pioneer, and they run flawlessly on one while on the other (the older of the two) they stall and sputter. The one that runs them was a $25 special, so it's not a question of high-end vs. low-end players (the other one was about $30, but it's two years old now, compared to the other one, which was purchased in November 2007).
Therefore, if you have a newer Macintosh and use Toast Titanium 8.0, you can almost certainly count on these discs burning cleanly; with Windows machines it seems to be something of a crapshoot, based on the other reviews (too many system variables to make any sort of predictions).
Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
For DL media you really cant beat the price and value of these discs. Before purchasing this 50 pack I had picked up a few 15 packs of these at a local store when they were on sale. I had a few fails on one of the packs but it was on an older slower computer and dvd burner. I have recently built a new pc and I am almost out of my 50 pack and have yet to have a single fail. I see a lot of people complaining about a high fail rate and any disc will fail if your using too many computer resources when trying to burn and using a high speed. I usually burn at 2.4x sometimes up to 4x max with minimal computer tasks being used! It takes a little longer but I learned from past experience that the time is worth the headache of tossing failed discs. Before you curse this product try adjusting what your doing cause like most things in life operator error accounts for most defects. All in all these work great for what I need them for and I will continue to buy them.
