I wanted a transmitter for my Sansa mostly for work, because I drive around most of the day. I got sick of the radio, and wanted to listen to my own stuff! I researched some of the other options, and pretty much arbitrarily chose this one, because it was a tossup. I had prior experience with a generic FM transmitter, and this Maximo definitely eclipses the Belkin!
I live in Portland, and at first thought I would have to settle for some background fuzz no matter what, and that's what seemed apparent at first. But after some browsing around, I found that the best station so far actually is not one I would choose based on static, because I can easily identify the songs on this station. But when I plug in the Maximo, the static goes about 90% away, and combined with the natural road noise and my music noise, it begins to be imperceptible to my ears.
I also listen to audiobooks/podcasts, and those can be harder to hear even at max volume, but enough of them work well enough. Generally I have my Sansa at max volume and the car radio pretty much close to max all the time, just to be able to hear. When I switch back to another radio station, I have to immediately turn down the volume because it will be blaring.
I jerry-rigged a setup for my car, because otherwise the Sansa will just dangle around, and it's hard to use while driving. Also, it seems like the closer the Sansa is to the transmitter, the more static there is. The cord was long enough to drape around the knob that holds up the rear-view mirror, so I actually use the Sansa upside-down. Then I clipped it to the AC vent near the wheel so it would be close to me.
I use Rockbox, and I think some different factors have also made this whole experience better. When it's dangling upside-down, I switch to the upside-down display mode in Rockbox. The latest versions of Rockbox now can even utilize the car charger, which I was prepared to go without.
Rockbox has a car adapter mode, which will detect whether the car engine is on, and in sync with the settings on Rockbox, will pause whenever I turn the engine off and autodetect and resume where it was when I turn it back on. I also have to take the Maximo in and out of the cigarette lighter for this to work.
The first week I got this, I took a trip in a different car. The Maximo worked even better in this car, probably because we got out of the city. Somehow one of the other passengers had the bright idea of unscrewing the socket end of the Maximo, which I hadn't even noticed was possible. This must have loosened the fuse inside, because when we unplugged it, the fuse came out. While trying to figure out where the fuse went (there's also a spring and a metal cap thingy) it fell underneath the seat, never to be seen again.
Needless to say, I was a bit angry at this other passenger. After the trip, I researched what fuse I should get, but it wasn't entirely clear, since I didn't even have the old fuse to refer to. I looked at the Maximo website, which said they would mail a replacement fuse at no cost, but I wanted it right away. The idiots at Radio Shack couldn't help and spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what fuse it would be behind their computers. When I peeked to see what they were looking at, they were just looking at the same websites I had looked at at home!
I decided to use the Maximo replacement fuse offer, which worked without a hitch, and only in a few days' time.
Otherwise, in general I would say that since I drive around for hours each day, the Maximo improves as the day goes on. I don't know why this would be, but it seems to be true. When I first plug it in, it doesn't always work great (tons of static) right off the bat. But it always gets better within 45-60 minutes. I realize for short trip drivers this absolutely would not do.
