Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Maxell P-13 Stereo FM Transmitter

Customer Review: A Handy Gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

I give the Maxell FM Transmitter 5 stars for one reason; it does what I need it to do. It might not do what you want it to do, however.

I purchased this product for use in a different way than its intended purpose. Most people will buy this transmitter for in-car use to transmit signals from an MP3 player to the car's FM receiver. I bought this product for indoor use, to transmit signals from a multi-band radio receiver to an MP3 player that has an FM tuner with FM recording capabilities (RCA TH1702-A). Once the audio file has been saved on the MP3 player in WAV format, the audio file is transferred to my computer's hard drive where it is edited and converted to MP3 format. The edited MP3 file is then copied back to the MP3 player.

I use the Maxell FM Transmitter in this way because I am primarily interested in capturing audio output on shortwave bands. I cannot patch the audio from my shortwave receiver directly to my computer, due to the radio frequency interference generated by the computer system. I cannot take advantage of Internet audio streams provided by many shortwave broadcasters because I am limited to dial-up Internet access.

The Maxell FM Transmitter provides an inexpensive solution to my problem. It works very nicely, providing high quality output for the MP3 player/recorder. Separation of the transmitter to the MP3 player is not more than 3 feet, although the MP3 player will detect the carrier wave farther than 3 feet. The transmitter's power output on 88.1 MHz is sufficient to over-ride a strong, local station on 88.3 MHz that generates some 'bleed over' on 88.1 MHz. I have noticed that my MP3 player works best with the transmitter if the MP3 player is turned on first, then the transmitter. If the carrier wave is 'dropped' by the MP3 player, it is not acquired by the MP3 player again until the transmitter is turned off, then on again.

I would not recommend this product to someone who wants it primarily for in-car use. This transmitter uses batteries. Other transmitters are available that come equipped with cigarette lighter adapters that can tap into a vehicle's power source. For those who need an FM transmitter providing extended range, it would be best to choose one with much higher power output, one boasting "whole house" transmitting capabilities. Higher-powered transmitters come at much higher cost, of course, usually in excess of $120.
